I bought this to bring on a long trip, and my travel partner bought the Farpoint 40 (basically the men's model of this pack, without the removable day pack). Because I saw both actually side by side, I realized that the 40l Fairview (and Farpoint) has some exterior pockets and a laptop sleeve, whereas the 40l bag that comes as part of this set has only the one large main pocket (and two zip mesh pockets inside, which the separate 40l also has). As a result, I returned the set and bought the 40l and the daypack separately. They work exactly the same and the whole Fairview/Farpoint system is interchangeable, but I like having the additional organizational help, as even with packing cubes I tend to lose smaller objects in the cavernous main pocket. I especially like the idea of an easy access pocket on the front of the big bag that I can slip things in and out of, but it's still hidden behind the daypack that's strapped in front of it for a little extra protection. I didn't see this spelled out in any reviews, by Osprey themselves or anywhere else before buying, so I thought I'd say so here, just so people know the fullest picture of the options.

I have to say, I'm not fond of this bag. As a 5’4” 125 lb female who was gifted it for travel use, I found it bulky and awkward. And, maybe this isn't a problem for everyone, but it is for me; it looks dorky on. I will be returning it.The framing is too rigid for it to tuck away easily. You can't hide it under a restaurant seat or something if you stop on your way to/from the airport or train. It's always just there next to you, bulky and in the way. Also, I know that it is likely designed to fit this way for the best ergonomic support and less shoulder strain, but the top of the pack comes halfway up the back of my head. I spent time adjusting it, but to wear it “properly,” this is how it sits. Even the picture on the website shows how high it goes up if you ... MoreI have to say, I'm not fond of this bag. I spent time adjusting it, but to wear it “properly,” this is how it sits. Even the picture on the website shows how high it goes up if you look at it on the model. Not only does that feel awkward and bothersome, especially when sitting down, but I think it also looks unflattering. Also, on a practical note, this trait makes peripheral vision and looking upward awkward.Overall, it could be suitable for some people who don't mind an unattractive, rigid travel backpack companion, making its presence known everywhere. It is durable, has good storage and strap versatility, is well made, and very comfortable regarding muscle strain. However, I am willing to sacrifice a little comfort and ergonomic support for style and subtlety if necessary. If that's not you, it's probably an excellent choice for all the reasons I just listed, and you should get it. If you care about aesthetics, it is worth knowing the things I mentioned earlier. This bag gets excellent reviews on the internet, but nobody has made these points. They are disappointing enough for me not to want to use the bag so I thought people should know.

I have been looking for a rucksack like this for years! It opens fully and feels robust and well made. Favourite features are that you can lock the top pockets to the bag using a loop, and the main pocket has a loop to attach the front pocket and main pocket to the rucksack. Main criticisms are that the lower pocket could do with this feature to allow better security as the padlock only goes through the pull loops on the zippers, and that the straps slip a bit meaning needs straps readjusting periodically with large loads. Air Porter bag is simple to use, capacity is good, comfortable to wear. Folds down well with compression straps if using it at less than capacity. Love this bag - currently using for backpacking.

Good bag that is a staple of the one-bag travel world. Haven't traveled with it yet but have packed it up and can already tell some pros and cons: Pros: -clamshell opening and compression straps. They don't overcomplicate things. Use your cubes, squash it down, close the solid zippers -decent organization. With the main compartment, inside zippered spot, main outside pocket for tech, and little top compartment for quick grab items, its got you generally covered on organizing your stuff -good carry overall. Generally the structure and fit, with solid back, waist strap, and women-specialized fit seem to make it one of the more comfortable travel-focused bags out there. (See cons though) Cons: -the "water bottle holders" are really useless as such. You could stuff a snack or a bandana in there, but when the bag is packed out, no water bottle of mine would fit. Also, its basically on the very back of the bag, which means the water is impossible to reach while on, and add weight way far out from your back. -you have to undo all four compression straps to get to the main compartment. Good for security, bad for quick acces. -while the carry is better than most other travel-oriented bags, it still doesn't compare the comfort of a bag oriented towards backpacking. Its basically abig square--to comply with plane carry-on needs) but that makes it stick pretty far out from your back, and the heaviest items you might have (water, laptop) are all organized to be way out back rather than next to your back for a better carry experience. The bag was nicely packaged up, arrived on time, and was consistent with description.
Just got back from my first trip with this bag and I thought it was great. It fits a huge amount, especially if you pack in compression bags, and the way it opens makes it really easy to load and open/close. It's comfortable and structured, but still very light. The straps do sit weirdly at first but then I realised there was a place to clip them to the main body, after which they were comfortable. No idea why they're not just attached in the first place but I'm sure there's a reason! Only design flaws IMO were the phone pocket on the waist belt - which was very small and sits on the curviest part of your hip, so can't rally be used for a phone - and the external water bottle pockets, which I think should have some elastic so you can open the main flap without the ... Not quite enough to dock a star though.
After reading such great reviews, I really wanted to go with the Fairview. I am a 5'9.5" tall, small boned woman with a 17 1/2" torso length. According to ospreys sizing chart, I should have been able to fit into the xs/s or the s/m. However both were too small and uncomfortable. So I went to the Farpoint 40. Tried on both sizes in the Farpoint and found that the Farpoint 40 in the s/m was the most comfortable. It's disappointing because I really wanted the full 40 litres which I should have been able to get in the woman's Fairview 40 s/m, but since it pulls on my shoulders I am forced to go with the 38L men's Farpoint "40". I could also really use the more thoughtful shoulder pads of the Fairview as the Farpoint's feel too wide for me near the bottom. So it's not a ... I need a carry on size bag for a trip I was taking and the one I has wasn't durable enough. So after some research I was looking at getting the 55L Fairview (which is just a combo of a 40L and 15L together). But I read the review that the 40L had more features than the one that comes in the combo so got that instead and purchased the 15L separately, too. It was such a great investment! The bag was the perfect size for overhead compartment (and the smaller bag fits under the seat nicely). I was able to pack everything for my adventure. The plus side was the ease of carrying both bags around. You can attach the 15L to the back or it has clips so it can hang in front of you - I did the latter mostly. My friends would have to take everything out of their top load bags, but I could just flip mine open and find what I needed, while leaving the rest in place.
Good sized, convenient bag for city breaks and train travel between cities.Loved: Cabin compliant size, attached day pack handy, can fit two weeks clothes in (just), clamshell opening, the big bag is comfortable for women’s sizing with shorter back. These mean it will be my go-to bag for holidays.Did not like: daypack chest strap and strap buckles not the right size or shape for women’s chest (caused blisters on inner arms - not adjustable enough to prevent this), daypack has a loose toggle closure for inner pocket rather than husband’s Farpoint daypack which has a far more secure clip buckle, webbing on daypack ripped on day 2 with normal use. Clips on big bag straps at front for day pack too high, and difficult to operate. Bags could also do with more robust ... I did lots of research and chose this pack for the capacity and the fact that it is sized for women with smaller torsos and narrower shoulders than the average man. I like all of these things and the pack is very comfy in those regards. We are going to Patagonia and also on an Antarctica cruise. I will have high quality heavy camera gear so I bought this pack so I can trek around Patagonia or go see penguins on the ice with all my gear. However I am amazed and disappointed that the waist straps are so short, that they won't reach if I have some warmer clothing layers or a parka on. I will need warm clothes where i am going. I can only do the waist strap up with summer clothes and a light jacket. I am not skinny but not particularly fat either and rather petit. These ... I can only do the waist strap up with summer clothes and a light jacket. I am not skinny but not particularly fat either and rather petit. These straps were not a fluke as we checked others in the store. I reached out to Osprey with the "Almighty Warranty" (NOT) and they are not shipping to Canada at this time or doing warranty work (WHAT??) So it was on my time and my dime to try and cobble up some longer straps for a $200+ dollar back pack. So unless you never plan to go where you need some layered clothes and a warm jacket, or are as skinny as a rake, beware of those waist straps. Very disappointed in this as the cost to make them a couple inches longer would be minimal or non existent and it wouldn't affect the function of the pack at all if they were pulled tighter on a person. I paid a premium for this back pack and it has a major fixable flaw in the design.
I previously owned the Farpoint 40 previously and have used it extensively for backpacking. I misplaced it while moving house and was looking for an upgrade. This was not it!Pros:- ample spaceCons:- Did not sit comfortably despite many attempted adjustments (5'1 female)- the back frame is now very rigid and rectangular, which makes it an awkward shape to carry- Lack of organisational pockets means that it is very difficult to access small things when travelling- Padded hip belt quite small compared to previous - less comfortable- Laptop sleeve awkwardly shaped and juts out in the main compartmentI love Osprey bags usually and was so disappointed! I have returned it now.
