26L Osprey Hikelite Day Pack

I purchased this day pack as a gift for my husband to use on light day hiking trips. The main compartment is very spacious for carrying extra layers of clothing and gear. He particularly liked the protective pocket at the top of the pack for storing his sunglasses and cell phone. Also, he ordered a 2 litre hydration pack that fits nicely in the upper inside sleeve. The wire frame provides an excellent support too. The protective rain cover included in this day pack is ideal for those less than perfect days. Overall, he loves this one 😊

I have gotten a TON of use out of this pack over the last couple years and I feel like I put it through its paces. I'm a biology student that does field work, I've used this pack as my school bag for the last two years, it's my go-to all weather day hiking pack, my go to foraging pack (I cram a small basket in the bottom to hold more fragile stuff i've picked), and last summer I used it to hike the grand canyon rim-to-rim in a day. In terms of capacity it's perfect for carrying everything you need for a long day of hiking, laptop and books, and anything else like that. I carried a 3L reservoir, food, first aid, socks, and other accessories on the grand canyon hike with room to spare and I never had a sore spot or felt like I was squeezing things in. The way the pack mounts off of your back is awesome especially if you hike in hot weather, wouldn't go back to any other design after that! Now the downside- that small zip pocket in the front- it's convenient because it gives you the ability to separate quick-grab small stuff from the rest of your pack but the photo on the website is SUPER misleading. Anything with any amount of weight placed in that pocket (keys, wallet, sunglass case, snacks, etc) will make that pocket sag down into the pack, and because its not stitched all the way around on the inside, it just kind of hangs inside the pack and gets in the way every time you try to put something back in the main body of the pack. If I have keys in the small pocket for example, the pocket will catch on my laptop every time I try to put it back in the pack. Is it a dealbreaker? No, but if you plan to use this pack a lot it will probably annoy you too. I would still recommend this pack but Osprey might want to take that part of the design back to the drawing board.

The side mesh pockets easily hold water bottles (32 oz Nalgene fits perfect), or anything else you need handy. The large pocket on the outside is really handy for coats, headphones, anything wet, or anything you can think of to put in it. Interior section is large and will hold a large amount of gear, the bladder pocket can double as a hideaway for documents, passports, money or anything else you want tucked away. The only thing I would change would be to make the top pocket a little bigger. You can put a cell phone, battery, keys, wallet, and some small items, but I like to put a little more than it can hold into it. To top it all off, a pack cover is included to keep the pack dry when you get more than a small drizzle while you are walking around. If you were on the fence about this pack, or are looking for a pack that won't make you sweat through your shirt, no matter how hot it is, buy this one!

Daily hiking
18 October 2023

I bought this bag for hiking in Montenegro. More than enough room for daily essentials and the super deep side pockets are really useful. No water bottles falling out here.Zip pouch in the top was perfect for small, easily accessed items like phone, wallet etc. Chest strap when around my bust which is unusual. Carry position meant it kept stress off my lower back and made my load seem much lighter. It was stable and easy to carry. Weight well distributed and comfy straps.

Great pack and perfect size. I really enjoy Osprey tech and customer service. They honor their warranty so that alone is worth the buy. I’ve used it on 1-3 day camping trips no problems. The built in rain cover is an awesome feature. When not in use I take it out and use the space. I’m 6 ft tall and 220 with no problems with fitting. So no sweaty feel after hours on. I would recommend to family

Great travel backpack!
8 February 2023

I'm really happy with my purchase because this backpack fit my needs for traveling! At first I was hesitant to get this backpack because it was just 1 large pouch with 1 small open pouch and 1 small zipper pouch. Most travel bags have 3 different pouches and a bunch of pockets to organize your stuff. So I was worried that just throwing all my stuff into one big pouch would make it difficult for me to stay organized but I just used travel pouches to keep certain items together. I was so happy with how much stuff I could fit into this 27L bag! I used to travel with a 22L bag and wanted to upgrade my pack so I could fit more stuff with me. I also really liked how rigid the frame of the backpack is and it will stand up on its own without any items in it. I also really liked how rigid the frame of the backpack is and it will stand up on its own without any items in it. The two outer pockets for water bottles are HUGE, which I absolutely just love. I usually carry a 32 oz hydro flask with me and would always throw it in my backpack which would take up a good amount of space. But with this pack I can place it in a side pocket and save room. I also like that there's a secure strap to the side of the pouch so I don't have to just rely on the elastic of the pocket to keep my hydro flask locked in.The biggest con to me as another review mentioned is the amount of pilling due to the air vent. I loved the idea of the air vent and did feel that it kept my back cool. However whenever I wear any cotton shirts or jackets, the air vent will pick up blobs of cotton. I ultimately decided to keep this bag because I loved how much it could carry and how comfortable it was, but I did notice that I had to be more careful about what clothing I wear with my pack because I'm worried about the pilling.

Light, bright and spacious

This is my first Osprey rucksack and I'm delighted with it. It is light and fits me (I have a small frame) well but I can get extra layers, waterproofs, plenty of water, food etc. easily. I took off the waist straps (once I'd worked out how which isn't THAT easy!) as I don't really need them. The back support makes it very comfortable even on a long day and I can get the waterproof cover on without taking the bag off if it is already pouring - which has happened a lot this summer. Recommend thoroughly and hope to be just as happy for many years as I am on a budget and need expensive items to last and be of good quality. I think this is just that.

Superb pack. Lightweight and comfortable.
12 June 2023

I was looking for a smallish day pack for carrying my small camera bag, a waterproof, water, picnic etc. and my local outdoor shop advised I tried this Osprey. Wow. It's so lightweight and with the waist and chest straps it's so easy to get comfortable. Plenty of room inside for all I need, plus the two external side pockets and a nice wide rear pocket with compression straps. Ideal for my camera trips and hill climbing for a day. The comfort is amazing, the back support and rear breathable mesh are simple excellent and it's such a well made bag. Love it. Roll on summer!!

Useless side pockets
10 May 2023

My wife bought me this as a gift for Christmas and I think it is quite possibly the worst small rucksack I have ever had. The biggest problem is the side pockets are low, gaping and the elastic is not tight enough, I have tried mutiple bottle sizes from 500ml to 1.5 litre, short and wide, tall and slim, but none of them stay secure. On my last walk a bottle slipped out as I climbed a style and it hit my Dad in the face who was just behing me. The single front pocket has an extremely thin liner and nothing much inside it, so everything gets jumbled up. The structure at the rear of the bag that is supposed to stop you getting too sweaty isn't very effective. The last small rucksack I had was really a lot cheaper and it was actually way better. Very good, but not perfect
1 December 2023

Pros :Super lightI like that it doesn't have a fixed hipbelt. For a bag this size, I don't find hipbelts necessary and they require you to wear your pack lower, Still, most packs this size have one. So not having one it's a big plus for this pack in my opinion.Trampoline back is comfortable and breathable.Cons :The shoulder straps fit a bit weird on me, but that might be different on you.Side pockets are not really reachable while wearing the pack so it's a bummer if you carry your water there.Front shove-it pocket doesn't hold much and is not very secure.I find the height a big long (but it's no longer than almost every other packs of this size).
