For the most part, this reservoir has been good enough for me. I have not had the leaking issues that others have had and it's easy to fill and clean, at least the main chamber and tube attached to the bite valve have been. I have had two issues with it, though: first, the plastic used to open and close the valve broke off fairly early on. I glued it back on, and though it stayed mostly intact, part broke off again. I'm still able to open and close it, but it's something of a pain. My last reservoir, a Platypus, also had a cheap bite valve that I had to go and buy a blue and yellow Camelbak valve to replace. That one worked great and I wish I hadn't thrown it away. If I can find one that fits, I might put that design of valve onto this reservoir. The second issue ... Needless to say, that thing is stubborn and it took quite a bit of pulling to finally get it off, to the point I thought I might break it off of the reservoir when trying to remove it for cleaning. Ultimately, these have been minor annoyances for a decent reservoir, but given the price, it would be nice if these weren't issues at all. Hopefully, they fix them in future designs, but if they don't, I may be leaning to another brand down the road.

There are so many things to love about the Osprey Hydraulics Reservoir. At 3 liters, this is a great addition to my pack for longer hikes or trips where stopping to filter frequently can get tedious. It was incredibly easy to fill and seal and I felt confident knowing that I had fully closed it off and wouldn’t experience any leaking. I love that the water filling takes place at the top, vs. my previous reservoir, which was awkwardly placed on the front face and made filling or taking any amount of water out difficult. The Slide-Seal top is a great feature.I easily placed this into my Osprey 50L pack and it fit seamlessly. I appreciate that the plastic feels both durable and lightweight. There was no redistributing of water required. I also love the handle and appreciated how easy it made carrying, even with only one hand free.I am a huge fan of the magnetic attachment for the bite valve. This is genius and was easy to attach to the webbing on my pack. I love having a designated spot to clip my bite valve and not having to worry about looping it through webbing or trying to come up with a makeshift solution. The magnetic is strong and held it in place. The bite valve worked seamlessly and I felt I was consistently able to get a great stream of water. I love that I could open and close it easily with one hand. I also think that having the hose detach is clever. It allows you to refill the reservoir without removing the hose and also aids in making the cleaning process easier.I did notice a plastic taste, but this seems pretty expected and I know I can take measures to reduce this.

I had the opportunity to test the Osprey 3L water reservoir. I prefer the water reservoir with a hose when I am long-distance backpacking as it helps me drink water more regularly than having to stop and pull out a water bottle. This is an upgrade from a former Osprey reservoir that I owned because the plastic is much more lightweight. Additionally, the soft, silicone-like plastic if supported by a lightweight plastic frame that ensures that a full bladder remains upright with even distribution of water. I am also impressed with the ease of using the dial at the bite valve, as well as the quality materials of the valve as it looks like it won't leak. Bonus inclusion is the magnetic attachment to keep the hose strapped to your pack straps! The only downside to this ... MoreI had the opportunity to test the Osprey 3L water reservoir. I prefer refilling my reservoirs staying within the pack as I hook up my water filtration unit. This means I will have to dig in my pack more to reach the connection hose. But that's a small thing. This reservoir has a great seal at the top, so it really appears to be quite leak-proof in any direction.

This is my second osprey 3L reservoir. I rarely write reviews but was bummed to see the bad reviews and thought I should chime in.My first reservoir started leaking (possibly through misuse) two days before leaving town for an 8 day trip in utah where I knew I’d blow through a ton of water and water sources were few and far between. I normally don’t buy any gear with zero reviews but I needed it and didn’t have a choice. Anyway, after using it a ton for a week I really like it. Some said it’s hard to clean, but I’d argue it’s no harder to clean than any other reservoir. Tiny bit of bleach or water purification tabs and you’re good to go. It’s 3L so it’s going to eat a lot of space in your pack and bulge in to your back when filled all the way. This model has ... MoreThis is my second osprey 3L reservoir. It’s 3L so it’s going to eat a lot of space in your pack and bulge in to your back when filled all the way. This model has addressed this issue a little by making it wider, taller and a little bit thinner. Between that and packing mindfully you can make it more comfortable. My only beefs with this model is the handle is a bit overkill making it a touch heavier than the previous model. That said it’s easier to fill and easier to switch the drinking side exit the right or left side so I don’t mind the weight penalty. The back is nice and stiff and would say it gets in and out of a stuffed pack about the same.
I have used a 3L reservoir in my Camelbak Mule and Backpacks for many years during back country trips. I like the 3L as I have consumed 2L – 3L a day on long excursions. I have used these on Fishing, Hiking, Skiing, Hunting and other outdoor activities. I share this so you know I have a lot of experience with a product like this.Pros:• Backerplate: nice feature that does allow easy loading & unloading. Other reservoirs I have used did not have this feature which made it an effort to get the flimsy product into tight spaces.• Carry Handle: Bonus, it does provide a nice purchase for manipulating this reservoir.• It was very easy to slip this product into my Camelbak Mule!• Quick disconnect: The location is great, right at the top which allows easy insertion of ... I have always draped my hose through the straps I have on every backpack and Mule. It looks nice and may come in handy for securing it within closer reach vs the backpack strap.
I had a previous generation, which I adored, but my darn cat bit two little holes in it. :-( So I went to REI to fetch a replacement. They had this new model and I figured it'd be great. I like osprey gear, it's never let me down... until now.I carefully kept it away from my cats. When I was headed out for a camping trip, I filled it up and put it in my pack. As I was loading my pack that was sitting on a chair, I noticed the chair was all wet. Grrr. So I took out the bladder and sure enough it was dripping wet. I dried it off just in case it was just the residual wetness from putting water in it. It started dribbling water again. So I gave it a few squeeze tests and a tiny stream of water sprayed out of where the new fangled handle was attached to the bladder. ... I like many things about my Osprey Hydraulics water bladder (3 liter, about 100 fl. oz). First, the magnetic attachment for the bite valve is great: it fits standard backpack webbing, can be adjusted but generally remains where you put it, and is strong enough to actually hold the bite value in place. Second, the external "frame" adds a pretty good amount of support so that stuffing the bladder into a backpack is much easier than the older styles with no support. It's a small thing, but not having to fight with the reservoir every time I go and put it into a pack has been great. Third, the opening for filling/cleaning the pack is well designed. I thought it was a gimmick at first, but there is a "flap" that sort of catches and directs water when you pour/fill the bladder. Maybe I just caught on quickly, but I did not filled the system pretty carelessly and made no mess at all. The locking mechanism (a fold and slide-seal deal) worked flawlessly for me.There were a few neutral notes that I noticed while using this for hikes/walks. The flow-rate modulation on the bite valve did work, but I never found myself setting it to anything less than "full" flow rate. Maybe I'm just a prodigious drinker. Also, that slide-seal locking clip would very rarely get "caught" and not close easily. It happened when the bladder was pretty full, and holding it up with one hand while trying to seal it with the other would "bend" the system enough so that I'd have to readjust the slide-seal a few times before it would attach correctly.I did not encounter any issues with the product. I generally try to avoid plastic touching food/drink, but did not encounter the off plastic-y taste that I often do. That may change with time, but so far so good.
The fold-close design of the filler on this Osprey bladder is definitely very unorthodox. Most of us are used to a screw-close design, but Osprey has proven that it’s not a necessary design feature. Now that I’ve used it, I prefer the Osprey version. It’s just so easy to fill, especially if you want to fill it with ice cubes. The opening on my old Gregory bladder, which I absolutely dislike in every way possible, is too small and far down the bladder for ice cubes or even filling at the fridge water spout. The Osprey, however, is right at the top and makes filling a breeze. The big opening also makes it easy to clean.I also really like the detachable hose. I really like this bladder, my wife has the first generation, and I really like the subtle updates they made for this generation.
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I am an avid backpacker in Idaho and have taken many water bladders along my journeys and the Osprey bladder is really nice to have. I like the quick disconnect from the bladder and the water hose. I was able to fill my bladder without having to take it out of my backpack. I like the convenience of the 3 liters so that I don't have to stop often to fill it back up. My current on is a 2 liter bladder. I like the magnet tube holder so that it doesn't flop around or get stuck behind me. I also like the control valve for how much water comes out. It fits well inside my REI daypack as well as my normal 75L backpack. Would definitely recommend.
Would have been nice if it didn't have a leak. The handle, the hard back and thing membrane dividing the interior to keep it narrow all work in theory together to help maintain a slimmer profile in your bag. However the one I picked up in store had a pinhole leak right at the corner of the handle that was impossible to patch, and just leaked all over. I'm just glad I noticed prior to placing it in my bag the night before my big hike and that I still had my older 3L osprey from 4 years ago to fall back on. In theory I think this is a great design, but in practice it just didn't work out for me and it was $10 more than my older 3L which still technically worked even if it was looking a bit sad after constant use. Overall I generally like this brand but I think this ... MoreWould have been nice if it didn't have a leak.
