First backcountry backpack I have bought. I am very happy with it. Used it for an overnight with a strenuous uphill hike with around 40-50lbs in it; the hip strap helps take the weight and spread it out to take the strain off the shoulders. Really nice quality and looks good. Lots of handy pockets and storage. It's nice that the zipper opens up (like a suitcase if you lay it on its back) so you can retrieve items from the bottom without having to empty the pack.I am 5'10 and 180 lbs and the SM/MED fits well.

( buy a liner bag if you are worried about the zip going, but it looks tough to me)Like the sleeping bag divider, internal compression strap, hip belt pockets, rain cover, water bladder compartment, stretchy net pockets.The not so good / awkwardImpossible to access net pockets once backpack is on, and they are almost too tight if the main is packed full. Hip belts are not easy to do up after opening and are really small. External stuff pocket can really hamper opening the U zip unless itās emptied first, load lifter straps are hard to tighten at times.I got this on sale, the price on Altitude saved me a small fortune, so for me itās a bargain backpack with good capacity for weekend hiking. Overall itās well designed and comes with a lifetime warranty. It has small things Iād like to change but no one backpack has everything perfect.Good luck

I've borrowed hiking bags from a friend for the past 3 years, and this is the first one I've purchased for myself - and it hasn't disappointed. The bag itself is very voluminous, there are a multitude of straps and buckles, when filled, the bag is comfortable to carry, and I foresee the bag being a very good purchase because it does its job very well.I'm not a hardcore hiker, so take my review with a grain of salt, as I only go on one 5-day/off-grid camping trip per year to Algonquin, but I don't see why this bag will not do what it's designed to. I'm sure veteran campers/hikers will find fault, but I don't have much to compare this bag against, so I'm impressed with its flexibility and function and form.

Wow, just wow. Sold my 23 year old Gregory Denali Pro 105l & bought this pack. It's amazing. I love the toughness of the material and the choice of options it offers. Plenty of pockets, adjustable straps, etc to customize the load you plan on carrying. I plan on abusing this puppy all season long as I know it will stand up to it. Really excited to get out there!
For me this pack hits the sweet spot in several areas. Iām not a complete minimalist in that I am at the age I appreciate a few camp comforts, and this pack can handle multi-day trips with a few little luxuries. It opens up like a duffel bag and yet carryās like a top loading backpacking bag. It seems well supported with just the right amount of features to not be excessive but more than adequate. It has lots of compression options and for smaller hikes can be well cinched down when I donāt need all that space. The quality of Osprey Packs are amazing and this is no exception! My perfect pack!
I have the pre-2023 version of this pack and I can't help but notice that this new version is about a pound heavier. Still, it's hard to imagine a better backpack. I am not an ultralight backpacker by any stretch (maybe 30-35 pounds total load for 3-5 days) and after hiking for a while I almost forgot I was wearing a pack. I liked the way the Kestrel fit me better than the Atmos but that's certainly a personal fit/preference thing. I do like how the Kestrel keeps the weight closer to your back. While I only have a few trips under my belt with this pack, it does seem to be made with first-rate materials and fittings (the zipper for the "suitcase" front flap opening is very hefty for example) and I imagine it will wear well.
Bought a S/M Kestral 58 for my 18inch back, I am 5ā 9.5ā. Fits well, I can alter it depending on load and bulk. Has an extendable lid that can go high over a closed main section. S/M is actually 56L in total, main section feels more like 40L +16L in the top and extra pockets if fully rammed.The main section has a compression strap inside and a divider near the bottom which can be relaxed out of the way.The side pockets are hard to access but there is space for water bladder. U shaped zip is handy for packing it flat on the ground and accessing what you need without unpacking everything from the top.Nice materials, good straps, feels durable and comes with a lifetime warranty.
I have yet to use this pack on a long adventure but given all the features it has, it seems to be perfect for me. The only complaint I can make would be my own fault, I was under the impression that the 'floating lid' would be removable as I was looking at several packs at the same time. This isn't an issue for functionality but just something I thought I should mention. Some of the best features for me include the trekking pole setup on the side as well as the sleeping bag compartment at the bottom of the pack. Instead of trying to squish my sleeping bag in there, it's a wonderful compartment for food as the top of this compartment is fixed, no matter how much weight you place in the main compartment. I did a lot of research on rucksacks for days before landing on Osprey. I bought this for my husband and he hasnāt used it yet but he canāt wait to. When you first get it, it doesnāt look like it can fit a lot but it does. He loves all the compartments, daisy chains, side/mesh pockets, etc. He loves that it also opens like a duffel bag for easier access and doesnāt just have a top opening. It looks like itās made well and it looks very sturdy. He ātestedā it out by packing it with his tent, sleeping bag, clothes in travel cubes, dry bag, cutlery, collapsible cups etc and so far so good. He loves the āfeelā of the bag and says the bag just hugs you/itās comfy which is key when youāre gonna be out on a hike in the woods for 3 days. His camping trip canāt come soon enough.
