Amazing Pack, Incredible comfort

I only have a few minor complaints with this bag. The first is the separate sleeping bag compartment. The divider between the main pack and the sleeping bag compartment is NOT removable, so if you go to buy a new sleeping bag (like I did) make sure it will fit (maximum about 14 inches long, 7 inches wide). Also, the hip belt pockets are just a little too small for my 6 inch phone, so it would be nice if those were larger. The last thing is the sheer size of the bag. It's really big, so if you're a minimalist backpacker, just doing overnight/weekend hikes, you may find yourself wishing you had gone with a smaller bag. Nevertheless, the compression straps mean that, even when the bag is underloaded, it still carries weight well.

I knew about Osprey guarantee, but couldn't wait the 8 to 12 weeks to have my old pack repaired. The new Stratos 36 has a couple of nice features one of which is the large pocket in on the back of the main compartment. My old Stratos had two pockets on top that were smaller. The main compartment on the new Stratos was only top loading, so you have to dig through everything to get to the stuff on the bottom. The old one had a large zipper that completely opened the main compartment. A feature I really liked - no digging. No matter how I adjust the new Stratos I find I can't get it to fit as nice as the old. I bought this for winter hiking and LOVE it. After trying on many Osprey packs, this one fit me best. I like that it has some easy access pockets for snacks, headlamp, etc, and can fit a 3L bladder. The bladder is a bit of a chore to get in, but as long as you load it before the rest of your gear, it isn't an issue. I love the quick holder for poles on the straps. I wasn't sure if I'd miss a front stuff pocket, but I haven't found that to be the case. I love the suspension design. The shoulder and hip straps are very comfy.

Honest review. Great comfort, decent features

I originally bought the Mystery Ranch Scree 32 for day hikes, overnighters and as an emergency bag in between, maybe for travel on occasion. It had amazing features like the super accessible Y-zip opening, but it was very uncomfortable. My back was hurting within minutes of wearing it because all the weight just hung against my lower back despite many adjustments in accordance with their instructions.Enter the Stratos 34. Incredibly comfortable, airy and supportive frame thanks to super breathable open-air mesh backing/straps and great adjustability. The comfort difference over the Scree 32 was night and day. I could walk for a long time with this thing loaded up on my back, which was the most important thing I was looking for in a pack. However, everything else about the bag is just pretty good or okay. I really miss the simplicity and rapid accessibility of MR’s Y-zip. You could ā€œripā€ open up the whole bag very quickly and get to your gear. This bag is a panel loader which is very run-of-the-mill. Works pretty well but you have to undo straps in multiple places to fully unzip it. It is nowhere near as easy to access my gear as my previous bag, but still easy enough. The storage itself gets eaten up quickly by the harsh curve of the frame (which I actually love since it keeps so much of the pack off of your back) and it also pushes your hydration pack pretty deep into the interior. However, I still think there’s plenty of space for a weekend’s worth of stuff depending on your load out, especially with the straps at the bottom (which I wish more packs in this capacity range had…)The pockets themselves are just fine, I think the extra pockets at the bottom are excessive, just make it one giant pocket. I guess it’s nice to have a designated rain cover compartment but I’d rather just toss it in there. I don’t need a bunch of little compartments. But to each their own. Also I wish it had more attachment points, I wanted to secure my big Grayl bottle in the water bottle pocket and the only sensible place to attach a carabiner was to a little tab on the pocket itself. It works but I’ve seen better from other brands.Everyone complains about the front zip pocket, how it becomes ā€œuselessā€ when the bag is full. However I find it awesome for objects like maps, documents, face masks, things like that. I actually really like this pocket a lot.Ultimately though, I don’t think any of these gripes are deal-breakers for my intended use. This pack delivers on comfort, support and breathability which are the most important aspects of a pack if you ask me. It isn’t the best in other areas but still definitely good enough for what I’d like to use it for.Overall I’d recommend this bag for sure. No one wants a sweaty, aching back whether it’s for recreation or travel or emergencies. It’s pretty big without being too big, offers some nice extras like straps at the bottom, and while several small things could be better it’s definitely an excellent choice in this size range.

Love it but…
10 February 2023

I like many things about this pack but had one problem that made me decide to return it. It has an adjustable frame and the top support for the system rubbed into my shoulder blade. I tried it in every size adjustment and it still rubbed. It feels okay with a jacket on so be sure and try it with just a shirt. On a long hike the rubbing was irritating and I felt in the summer might even cause skin abrasions. I returned it.

I own a couple of outdoor packs including Montane Cobra, Osprey Rook. I was finding the Cobra was too small for adventure backpacking. And the Rook was too big. I knew my Rook was of exceptional build quality. This new Stratos 44 is the best backpack I’ve ever owned. Incredibly durable and strong, especially the stitching. Being ex British Army and a member of the Army Mountaineering Association and the British Mountaineering Council, I live in the outdoors and stitching for me is the first place I examine on any equipment. Because this is what keeps it together, and it’s also for me the mark of attention to detail and shows the company cares about the finished product. There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of money on something and after a few uses it starts coming apart at the stitching. The Stratos 44 is perfect for carrying all your essentials for a couple of days, I always carry enough equipment to see me through 48 hours should the need arise. I carry a sleeping bag which fits in the bottom in a proper housing so you’re not dragging everything out. Plus a goretex bivi bag in this compartment. I carry a blizzard blanket and a Brothie group Shelter for emergency. I carry a survival kit, dry montane terra trousers, a waterproof hardshell jacket, either a Rab or a Montane jacket then gloves, hats, socks, Helly Hansen lifa and gaiters make up my extremities kit, plus food, stove, gas, water… mapping, head torches, compasses, as and enough water. This is the perfect size for wild camping, hiking, backpacking. If I was doing more Alpine I’d probably go bigger, but this is a fantastic pack, stacked with features, pockets aplenty, really comfortable to wear and keep you wired out on your back. This is my Go To backpack now

Perfect balance for a daypack
16 April 2023

I bought this as an upgrade and expansion from my Talon 11, which I love, for some longer adventures I have planned. I’m not a minimalist, ultralight hiker, but I like a bag that holds just enough. The suspension and frame of this pack keeps the load well distributed, and even over-packed with 2.5 liters of water in it, I never felt like this was heavy. The pockets are well thought out, and absolutely bombproof. Haven’t had to use the rain cover but it’s great to have on call.Only quibble is the pockets one the hip belt are a bit hard to zip close, but that’s such a minor issue it’s barely worth mentioning. As someone who’s been hiking for 30+ years, this is a really great addition to the gear roster.

Very good backpack

This daypack is great for carrying medium weights, with fantastic airflow for the back. The pockets are very conveniently placed; in particular, the easily accessible front pocket is a great design idea. The belt is very comfortable and includes an additional two pockets that fit a smartphone, sunglasses, etc. There are a ton of adjustments to ensure that the pack is a great fit. One note however: we also happen to have the men's version, which is almost identical, and we feel that the pack is a better fit for men in terms of size and bulk. To a certain degree, it feels a bit too big/heavy for a daypack, yet too small for a multiday backpack. An alternative would be the Hikelite 26 which we also have and, for some reason, feels much more compact despite being a 26L ...Ā MoreThis daypack is great for carrying medium weights, with fantastic airflow for the back. best mid-size hiking pack I've ever owned
21 May 2023

Have owned a dozen hiking packs of various sizes over the years, and this now sits at the top of the list replacing my tried and true Talon 33. New adjustment system is very welcome - just clip and go. Plenty of attachment points and is very durable, but the biggest compliment is that it's comfortable to wear - sits superbly and the ventilation is better than any other bag I've tried - and I had no issues after back-to-back dayhikes. It's probably too small for an overnighter unless you're a dedicated minimalist, but it perfectly fits the bill for what I need.

Let me start by saying I currently own 7 Osprey sacks of different sizes. I think they are the best bags out there out there and I am absolutely certain i'll buy more! I have had a Stratos previously back in 2005 which was a great bag and so I thought I'd get another one. The latest Stratos however is a bit of a let down. Yes it has all the excellent features that Osprey provide but the fit is horrific! Whether its due to my small stature (5'6" tall, 36" chest) but I could not get the bag to sit comfortably on my back. I have adjusted straps, changed back length settings but it still does not sit properly or comfortably on my back.
