I bought this pack at REI a few years ago after looking at lots of others. I used it for a 2 week trip hiking the Camino. Never before having needed a pack while hiking, the Tempest 9 was comfortable and easy to adapt to. The back panel supported its contents and kept my back from becoming drenched. I found it easy to access contents and very easy to slip on and off. It held my water, rain jacket, snacks, sunscreen, hat, binoculars, and camera. If you’re a minimalist, this one’s for you.

Great day bag!
22 February 2020

I bought this bag about a month ago because I was using a larger 28L one as a day bag, and it was just too big. I am in love with this one! It is just the right size to use around town. It easily will fit a tablet, a book, a change of shirt and socks. I did have to get a smaller water bottle because mine was too big for the holder. It has a place for your sunglasses on the shoulder straps, and the waist straps have pockets, which isn't typical in a bag this size. I also love the loops on the zippers. Makes them easy to find and pull. I know it was originally designed for bikers, and the bungee part will clip in a bike helmet, but I've used it to hold hats, mittens that were wet (because I didn't want them in the bag), and an overshirt at different times. If you want functionality, don’t buy this daypack
28 March 2024

This backpack has very few pockets and is not at all functional as a daypack. One small internal pocket and no external pockets (other than for water bottles) so it’s basically just a big sack where everything falls to the bottom. The fit is off and the hip strap does not keep the backpack from riding up, which made the chest strap choke me.

LOVE THIS BACKPACK!
2 August 2021

I purchased this a few months ago (in a beautiful green) and have hiked with it almost daily for the last 6 months in hot AZ. It is small and light but mighty...has so many amazing features and I am all about the features - good organizational pockets in a few locations, pole storage, outside stash area, comfortable/cool back, great/easy bladder, whistle on top chest cross-strap, and my favorite part - the little mesh strip on the armhole strap where I put my chapstick. It was the perfect size for my Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim hike - held a lot of gear without being too heavy or cumbersome. I'm about to buy the Osprey Mira 22 for longer hikes where I need to carry rain gear/layers. LOVE Osprey!

Overpriced, heavy, not functional

Overpriced, heavy, not functional. Water reservoir pocket 1) is too tight, 2) doesn't allow non-Osprey reservoirs to be latched in (as usual), and 3) doesn't come with a reservoir (absurd at this price point). This bag also weights more than other small daypacks--e.g. the Camelbak Octane 16, which has over twice the storage volume, and can also be cinched down when not filled to the brim. I mainly tried this for the hip belt with pockets, which is pretty much the only good thing about this bag other than the colors. As others have noted, other than the extra pockets on the belt, this bag is seriously lacking in pockets common to day packs. Has some extras like the structured back and the load straps on the shoulders... but those are overkill for a day pack this tiny ... MoreOverpriced, heavy, not functional. Serious disappointment, because the colors are beautiful, but don't be hoodwinked by that.

Perfect
22 May 2024

Just the right size for an everything you need on a long walk. In the main section I fit a 1.5l bottle of water + dog bowl, a jacket, sun cream, bug spray, and some human snacks. The side pouches fit headphones and keys in one side, and dog treats etc in the other. The bottle compartment very easily fits a yeti bottle which I could get in and out without taking the bag off. Moreover, it magically doesn’t feel too hot when wearing it because of the mesh back. Love it.

Perfect size!
3 March 2024

This backpack is the perfect size for short hikes, x-c skiing & cycling. I have a similar pack in the 20 litre size for longer hikes but this one carries all the essentials for shorter excursions. I like the close-to-body fit and it does not shift when leaning to one side which is especially important when skiing. There are enough pockets to help keep items organized and the 2 stretch mesh pockets for water bottles, etc. are very useful. It appears to be of good quality. I would recommend.

minimal size maximum features

I have had the previous model of this pack and loved it so much I recently purchased 2 more for my daughters. All models provide us with enough room for minimal gear and provisions for day hikes or treks. There are enough pockets to keep everything organized and easy to reach, including 2 zippered hip pockets for items we need on hand. The straps are very comfortable and the entire pack moves with the body, especially helpful in tight spaces. I use hiking poles sometimes and love that this pack carries them when I don't need, or can't use them. When day hiking in Iceland, I was able to carry a lightweight rain jacket and pants, hat/gloves, food and 2 liters of water. I loved the older ventilated back panel, but the glue seemed to migrate and discolor the base, which I only noticed after comparing the new ventilation pattern that my kids now have. The only down side is the water bottle pockets are a bit shallow and only one has a strap to hold taller bottles in. Because the pockets stretch, sometimes twisting actions squeeze the bottles out. I lost one once this way. l know it's pricey, but very well worth it
