I bought this to use as a daysack on holiday as my usual daysack is quite a bit bigger etc. It fits in my large rucksack without taking up much room and holds food, extra layer and water when in use; all the essentials for a day trip but not much space for 'just in case' items! The hipbelt pockets are a decent size so useful for storing small items you need regular access to, and the side pockets take Camelbak water bottles. The straps are a good size and its easily adjustable.I would prefer a front mesh pocket as they're really handy, and trampoline style mesh ventilation would also make the talon/tempest range even better. There aren't that many fully ventilated hiking backpacks out there! Also, Osprey's sizing is confusing (they say XS/S or M/L) because there ... MoreI bought this to use as a daysack on holiday as my usual daysack is quite a bit bigger etc. It fits in my large rucksack without taking up much room and holds food, extra layer and water when in use; all the essentials for a day trip but not much space for 'just in case' items! I bought this pack at REI a few years ago after looking at lots of others. I used it for a 2 week trip hiking the Camino. Never before having needed a pack while hiking, the Tempest 9 was comfortable and easy to adapt to. The back panel supported its contents and kept my back from becoming drenched. I found it easy to access contents and very easy to slip on and off. It held my water, rain jacket, snacks, sunscreen, hat, binoculars, and camera. If you’re a minimalist, this one’s for you.

Well worth the investment. The Tempest 9 is great for day hiking, biking or urban traveling! Small, the fit on back seems to match all of the right places once you determine which size fits your body. The compartments of the bags are well situated and easily accessible. Also enjoy the hip belt that includes large pockets for cellphone or whatever else you’d need to access. Small enough not to get in the way of your bike helmet and backpack when biking !! Quality you know and expect from Osprey! Overall great small backpack!

This is my fourth Osprey backpack. I needed a daypack to hike Pike's Peak. This fit the bill, plenty of room for water. Change of clothes and snacks with room to spare. I will say that you do have to put the bladder (not included) into the pack before you pack in the rest of your items. A little annoying but also no big deal. Fit great and comfortable which is the most important part.
I purchased this a few months ago (in a beautiful green) and have hiked with it almost daily for the last 6 months in hot AZ. It is small and light but mighty...has so many amazing features and I am all about the features - good organizational pockets in a few locations, pole storage, outside stash area, comfortable/cool back, great/easy bladder, whistle on top chest cross-strap, and my favorite part - the little mesh strip on the armhole strap where I put my chapstick. It was the perfect size for my Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim hike - held a lot of gear without being too heavy or cumbersome. I'm about to buy the Osprey Mira 22 for longer hikes where I need to carry rain gear/layers. LOVE Osprey!
Not sure why Osprey changed their shoulder straps; the padded part is shorter. Not good. The longer thin strap ends up kinda digging into your ribs. I have been devoted to Osprey packs for over a decade; I'm now probably going to have to try something else. Just can't find one to fit.
I was worried it would be too small in comparison to the tempest 20 but it has just enough space for a half day or full day hike. I was able to pack a 2L water bladder, sunscreen, camera, headphones, multiple snacks, bug spray and still had loads of room. The elastic in the back was useful when I needed to store my sweater away during the trail and the little pockets were useful to store things I’d need easy access to like Kleenex or lip balm without having to remove my pack.
I purchased this back primarily for it’s volume of 9L, for daily use. I would use it for long walks and fit the water reservoir. However, I found it a bit too stiff for my purposes. The frame is the dominant feature. Good for hiking, as designed, not as comfortable for long walks in the city. I got the gray colour, it is beautiful. The fabric is of high quality and the organization appropriate for the size.
Perfect size for a hike that last a couple hours. Used it at the beach as well. Surprisingly, it was not affected by sand and it dried so fast (I would use it as a pillow) The multiple pockets are very convenient to put sunscreen for easy access or a water bottle. The waist pockets are perfect for lip balm and you're phone (i have iphone pro 13).
I have had the previous model of this pack and loved it so much I recently purchased 2 more for my daughters. All models provide us with enough room for minimal gear and provisions for day hikes or treks. There are enough pockets to keep everything organized and easy to reach, including 2 zippered hip pockets for items we need on hand. The straps are very comfortable and the entire pack moves with the body, especially helpful in tight spaces. I use hiking poles sometimes and love that this pack carries them when I don't need, or can't use them. When day hiking in Iceland, I was able to carry a lightweight rain jacket and pants, hat/gloves, food and 2 liters of water. I did strap my camera case to the hip belt and stashed my scarf in the bungee cord panel when I didn't need it. I loved the older ventilated back panel, but the glue seemed to migrate and discolor the base, which I only noticed after comparing the new ventilation pattern that my kids now have. The only down side is the water bottle pockets are a bit shallow and only one has a strap to hold taller bottles in. Because the pockets stretch, sometimes twisting actions squeeze the bottles out. I lost one once this way. l know it's pricey, but very well worth it
