Baggy and Impossible to Remove

I used these once on a very long steep Calif desert trail. I have lean calves; the tops drooped down within a few steps. While the gap was not huge it invites little junk to come in via the top. The worst part of these is the clips at the bottom. Imagine hiking for 6 hours and just wanting to get your boots off, but you can't!! What do you do, take a hunting knife and cut off your boots?? I nearly lacerated my fingertips to remove these one way, clip forever clips. Whatever OR brand manager and REI category manager released these things certainly never tested and should be fired. So many other gaiter options, don't buy these, and don't support REI for putting lousy designs in the market.

These almost made it. Compared to the super UL gaiters OR made +5 years ago...these can't compare.Looking at these on their own, I like the ankle elastic. The light colored fabric in the front dirt stained with the first use. All my shoes have the "soft" patch on them and I have never had a problem that way. The O/R way, everyone has a problem with them. All in All, after having to file down the hooks to make them useable and reversing the velcro these will work just fine, but why should I have to remake them when it would have been so easy to start with?

tl;dr avoid as the hooks are super annoying to deal with, especially with laces for any boots--they are OK with sneaker type shoes but still grab way too aggressively and are very hard to remove. These are fairly comfortable (read: cool/not sweaty) for gaiters of their height, and held up well for about two seasons of backpacking. Design problems
12 November 2021

The fit was a little snug and I'm a small person so I can imagine how a bigger person with a larger shoe would have a little difficulty getting these on (size S/M). After only 3 hikes the cord broke. So much for durability. The clips are very difficult to take off once you get them on. This product definitely has some design problems. They should test these products before putting them on the market.

Disappointed too
4 August 2022

I should have read the reviews prior to purchase. But, I have owned many OR products including gaiters and have always been satisfied with them. These Ferrosi hybrids were a real disappointment and should be taken off the market. The major problem is the retainer cord it comes apart at the seam connection (poor design). When my first pair failed quickly, I ordered a replacement pair (thinking it is OR and this failure was an exception) and the replacement pair quickly failed again in the same way.I agree that they are Hard to put on and take off. Clips are difficult to clip and unclip etc etc

Love these ultra-lite weight gaiters
14 July 2023

Read the reviews and understand how others have issues. I have somewhat of a contrarian view, having worn them on two separate week-long trips on sections of the AT in Georgia and day hikes in Texas. My experience is:1) strap hooks take a little effort to undo the "fish hook" fastener, gets easier w/ practice2) I use a micro-carabiner to secure the front of gaiter to boot laces3) durability has not yet been an issue for me4) these gaiters keep dirt and debris out of my boots when hikingFor a pair of gaiters that weigh in at 2 ounces I'm very satisfied.

Ripped after first use
19 January 2023

Was so excited with this purchase and then super disappointed after my first hike to find a tear in them. I didn’t even go through anything I would have thought would risk tearing these gaiters. I was on trail the entire time. I still use them because it’s better than nothing. Do not recommend, don’t waste your time with these.

Wanted to love, but wouldn't recommend
3 September 2021

I bought these to wear with trail running shoes because they're light, stretchy, and on the shorter end of available gaiters at REI. I would not recommend these, either for running shoes or low hiking boots. First, the elastic around the bottom snapped my second time wearing them. I was able to tie the elastic together with a small knot so they were still usable, but now one gaiter is much tighter than the other and barely wearable. Second, the height + stretchiness combination of the top just doesn't work. The elastic is not tight enough to stay up on my calf, so the entire length of the gaiter just bunches around my ankles. Maybe if the top was adjustable or if the gaiters were shorter it would work. You can do better than buying this gaiter. Inferior product.
17 November 2021

I used these gaiters on one hike of 12 miles/4500' of elevation gain. They proved really difficult to put on (shoe size = 12 M, gaiter size = L/XL). Worse, the second attempt at using them resulted in the elastic cord at the bottom of one gaiter to break. I made a knot and was still able to use the gaiter for the second hike.My recommendation: Buy something else. Even if the cord hadn't broken, I don't know if I would use these again because they are so hard to put on and are equally hard to remove. Obviously, something that lasts only one use is a product best avoided. I consider the gaiter to be a complete waste of money.I expect O.R. to replace the faulty gaiter. The replacement is likely to go in my tub of hiking stuff that never gets used.

disappointed
29 May 2022

Outdoor Research usually put out quality gear but these were a wiff and miss. Had high hopes and was disappointed when I couldn’t even use them once. They were on clearance and I should of known, You usually get what you pay for with outdoor gear. The elastic cordage snapped while I was putting them on at the trailhead. Too bad. The one that didn’t break, fit well and did it’s job. I’m gonna try to purchase some elastic cordage and string it through and try to salvage them.
