It can be hard to find refuge from the cold on frigid mountaineering missions if you don't pack along the proper gear. Luckily Outdoor Research makes it easy to stay both warm and comfortable in the mountains, even when you're working hard. The OR Refuge Pants feature the warm yet breathable VerticalX insulation, which was made specifically for intensive high-output pursuits in cold conditions. Combined with a breathable fabric treatment, VerticalX works to keep you at an optimal temperature by allowing just the right amount of heat to escape as you push up steep ascents and technical ice climbing routes. It still maintains the right amount of warmth, however; so you won't find yourself lamenting the active insulation when you're taking a rest. Meanwhile, these pants provide a movement-mirroring stretch on technical alpine terrain, have double-separating side zippers for ventilation and convenience, and boast a special rear pocket that doubles as a stuff sack when you're packing up for longer trips and excursions.

I really do like these pants and would give them 5 stars except for one thing. They will not zip over the cuffs of either my AT or Telemark boots. That being said the insulation is light yet warm and is also comfortable over a broad temperature range. They also do fit over the Donjoy Knee braces I have to now wear while skiing.

Super cool insulation. Once again OR gives the choice to the athlete. These pants fit under a shell of you're into do-it-yourself snow pants or you can hike to a location and throw these on over your pants to retain heat while stationary. I really dig the fact that OR tries to create gear that can be used across a range of disciplines; for instance, I would wear these under a shell if I was alpine skiing or save them to warm up while stationary after nordic skiing / hiking.

Like these pants alot, bought them for use as a puffy over pant layer for stop and go activities in the winter. I would never walk in these since they are toasty and I normally find anything more then a set long johns and pants too warm down to -40 C. Only change I'd like to see is a full elastic waist band, draw cord or belt loops. I find that well the fit is perfect in the legs and seat, its on the cusp of too large in the waist. Sizing down would not be an option in this case as it would be too constricting in the legs and seat.

These are good. They are warm and sturdy. The waist band is comfortable. The pockets are even lined. They do exactly what they are supposed to do in all technical aspects. However, I am not a fan of the material and cut and thickness. The face material is a little cheap. The thickness and filling is a little too warm. The cut is a little baggy and the thickness is weird so I wouldn?t wear them out. They look like snowpants.I also on the proton pants. I live in them. They are lighter and have a better cut. Better material. But no pockets or fly like these. I prefer the proton by a lot.Oh I purchased the large and they are a bit baggy and long. I?m 6ft 190.
I got these for hut trips, snowmobile grooming, and late season hunting. I've used them a few times, once grooming, and they are easy to don over boots and toasty! I like that the entire back 1/2 is elastic, but they could still use some adjustments or suspender loops (I got a few velcro suspenders from other OR pants). I'll either go with some cinching in the waist or use clamp-style suspenders. I needed the length of the large, but the waist is too much. Not contented enough I suppose.
These pants are AWESOME! As a member of SAR, we respond to situations 24/7, whether it's a blizzard or 105 degrees here in Utah. During these winter months, temperatures can drop and situations can get into white out situations in a bat of an eye. It's comforting to know that I can easily pack these in my pack, zip them over my layer and stay warm if we are staging at a location or working on packaging our patients. I've worn these during 10 degree weather with high winds and it keeps me nice and toasty. Thanks for making a great product and you won't be disappointed by these pants.
Used for snowboarding at 12,000 ft in Colorado for two days. The pants let in no moisture and snow slid right off easily. I was worried at first because the coating did not seem to be the most durable compared to a strict ski pant. I was pleasantly surprised with its snow capabilities. They fit extremely well, I have a 32 waist and the medium fits perfectly. The insulation is very warm and soft, feels like upgraded sweat pants. The full zips on the sides are awesome for fitting and taking off with other bulky snow gear.
These pants are great. They slide over other layers well, are highly wind resistant, have full-zip sides, and are true to size (at least for the size small.) I have only worn them once so far in -15C with light wind, but they kept me toasty warm. The only downside I have found is that there is no way to cinch up the waist, so if you have stuff in the pockets, they will slide down. It is not too bad if the pants fit well to begin with though, since there is a slightly elastic waistband built-in.
Puffy pants are great for ski camping. I throw them over my ski pants thanks to the full length side zips. I also wear them in my zero degree sleeping bag with a puffy jacket to increase warmth. The draw string at the bottom keeps snow out of boots. The fit is perfect as I use them over other pants.
I'm a 5'7" women, 130lbs and the men's small works well. I could probably fit the men's xs but this way I can put a layer underneath. It's like jumping into a walkable sleeping bag these pants are so lovely. They're super lightweight, lighter than my snowpants and they've kept me warm for fatbiking at -15 and XC Skiing around -10. I'm so happy I chanced the men's and would love to see women's! I"m hopeful these can take me down to -20 with their windproof protection.
