Blu-Ray Recorder is a fantastic feature

Firstly, this player works well as a Blu-Ray player. Fantastic picture quality, as good as any Blu-Ray player I own and works very well playing through my Yamaha 5.1 Home Theatre System, decoding lossless audio DTS-HD and Dolby True HD tracks: producing excellent audio quality. Secondly, it records HD broadcasts well, playing back at an average bit rate of 15mbps, more than enough for 1080i. Therefore, you can re-watch programs on 7HD, 9HD &10HD in 1080i quality where you can't tell the difference between the broadcast quality and recorded quality. Also, the Blu-Ray recorder feature is fantastic. I connect my VCR through the composite input (RCA) and I have recorded my old Formula 1 VHS reviews to the HDD and then burnt them to Blu-Rays. Also, the Blu-Ray recorder feature is fantastic. I connect my VCR through the composite input (RCA) and I have recorded my old Formula 1 VHS reviews to the HDD and then burnt them to Blu-Rays. Capable of easily transferring 3 hours of playing time to a 25GB Blu-Ray and I can then store my VHS tapes out of sight and easily store the Blu-Ray disc copy. While a VHS outputs in 576i (and you won't get a higher quality resolution via an composite input) the HDD does a 1080p transfer to the disc, so it comes out looking very nice and the audio is converted to 2.0 Dolby Digital, which is a nice plus. 1080i broadcasts will also transfer nicely to Blu-Ray disc in Full HD quality, should you desire to archive what you have recorded to disc format. I have found that it does not do the best job of upscaling DVDs to a 1080 Full HD resolution, but a DVD picture still looks very good, with a score of 4/5. Not as good as the PS3 upscaler (5/5), and in my humble opinion the Sony PS3 is still the best DVD upscaler on the market. Alas, I need to remind myself that DVDs will never look as good a Blu-Ray transfer that is native 1080/24p (or 1080i/50 for UK/Aussie TV on BD) as an upscaler is simply projecting what it "should" look like at 1080 resolution and is simply filling in the pixels with what the upscaler "thinks" should be there. While it does not have 4K upscaling, if you are not looking to purchase a 4K (Ultra HD) TV in the near future and are happy with your Full HD TV, I recommend getting this Blu-Ray Player/Recorder to record TV programs, archive VHS tapes and watch Blu-Ray movies/TV on Blu-Ray.

The Panasonic Blu-Ray recorder is such an amazing addition to any TV setup. This machine records and plays blu ray discs and dvds, plus has a hard drive with a capacity to record 70 hours of live TV on the highest quality setting! The user guide is in depth and so many different uses for one machine. Would highly recommend

I bought this to replace a seven-year-old Panasonic model, an earlier equivalent that did not have a digital receiver. The earlier model was still working well after being used a lot. This new model is just as easy to use and is not difficult to set up. It produces beautiful HD and standard recordings from TV. Unlike my previous recorder, this one creates chapters when recording from TV, enabling ads to be removed easily. The automatic chapter placing is pretty good but may not be perfect if you want to copy the program to disc; however, you can also create chapters manually and I believe this model enables more precise manual chapter placing than the earlier model did. Timer recording is much easier using the TV Guide. As a teacher who is able to copy material legally from TV for educational purposes, I find this recorder very valuable and a useful alternative to streaming movies and TV if you're running out of quota. Now I just wish TV stations would screen some older and less common movies and vintage TV.

Haven't used it so can't really say, so put in one star, but our previous Panasonic units have been satisfactory.
18 November 2022

Haven't used it yet, still sitting here. We fixed the remote on the T-Box so still using it. Intend to change but as we do not have any Blue-Ray cd's we are unsure if it is the right unit for us. The alternative is a WiFi unit and my son says this would be more suitable We have been without power for three days so am just getting back to normal with more important problems to fix. fallen trees etc.

Impressed with this new model
27 May 2021

I have had 3 previous models over the last 12 years and all have been good and easy to use. I use them for mainly recording programs. This latest model has some great new features. I really like the new chapter feature which automatically inserts chapters. If like me you insert chapters manually then you will like this new feature, including quickly deleting those not needed. You can now search for programs from within the program guide. The new recording and series recording works very well and starts and ends the recording at the correct time, even if the program is late starting etc. Some great improvements on an already good recorder. Shop around as prices vary greatly. Pros Easy to use, faster, amazing new features. Cons No WiFi for firmware updates, Ethernet only.

Regretful, buyers remorse

Our old Panasonic died after 5 years and we got the latest model. This one. It DOES NOT have Wi Fi like the old one, I need to plug in a LAN cable. That is absurd in this day. Besides, it DOES not have acces to the internet for things like Netflix, Youtube or anything. The only use for the LAN port is firmware updates. But dont bother, the server that this unit tries to connect to for updates has been shut down! With no way to change it!!! Ridiculous. Third time lucky
7 July 2022

About 10 years ago, we purchased a Panasonic Player/Recorder. After you got to understand the remote etc, it all worked fine for about 4-5 years, but died. Hard drive failure. And news from the repairer was that the unit was unserviceable. So we bit the bullet and purchased another Panasonic Player/Recorder. Operation and function buttons were the same as the previous one so we didn't have to learn new skills etc. Then after about the same period of time, it too suffered heart failure and once again, the unit was deemed to be unrepairable. Third time lucky We did the research once again and this time opted for the latest model which was a Panasonic Blu-ray Player/500GB Twin Tuner Recorder. Same functions and remote-control device. No issues at present, but if we look to the future, we do have to ask the question, will it last longer than 4-5 years We'll have to wait and see.

WASTE OF MONEY, POOR "FEATURES"
1 June 2021

I bought this 6 weeks ago & I am so cranky. The DVD player doesn't hold its place in the movie or show. If you stop or pause it & don't get back to it that day it restarts at the beginning of the DVD. There isn't an eject button for the DVDs & no volume control on the remote. The PVR only allows you to record 2 programs, I was told it would record more by the salesperson. If you want to record the same program every night at the same time you have to set up a separate recording for each day. It only allows daily or weekly. Coming from a Topfield, this "feature" is more than annoying. You have to be very careful when setting up your reservations to record. If you accidentally bump/press any button around the buttons you meant to press, the whole reservation disappears & you have to start again. This "feature" is not finger friendly & I have small fingers. The buttons are crammed too close to each other. You cannot move recordings into separate folders, so everything stays in one place, which means it's hard to find what you want to watch if you keep a lot of content. Honestly, the only good thing I can say about it is that it has a jump forward button, that if pressed at the right time, takes you from the beginning of the first ad to the start of the actual show. So no more guessing the ad break.

the unit does the job it is designed for, but could do it a little better. For instance skipping forward/back on recorded material (using the skip buttons not fast fwd/rewind) you only have the option of 1 minute forward/10 seconds back, and every time you push either button it needs to think about it for a second, meaning if your last skip forward takes you 50 seconds into what you want to watch it means pressing the back button 5 times (with thinking time between each push). I would also like the time to be displayed on the front of the unit. I at no stage have regretted this purchase and may, in time, come to appreciate this unit, I think at the moment I am pining for my old tuner/recorder
