The Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f1.2 ASPH Power OIS Lens from Panasonic offers a 35mm focal length equivalent of 85mm and a fast aperture of f1.2 making it well-suited for portraits. It also features Power O. I.S. for optical image stabilization ensuring sharp images by decreasing the effect of movement and camera shake. For quality the lens has a Nano Surface Coating technology that minimizes reflections cause by stray light. This combines with two aspherical elements that suppress spherical aberration and distortion to give a clear image. Additionally there is an Extra-low Dispersion element that increases contrast and sharpness and an Ultra High Refractive Index element allows for a uniform look to the edges of the frame. This lens also has an all-metal design including the lens mount and the included hood. There is even an external aperture ring and nine circular diaphragm blades for smooth out of focus areas of the frame at large apertures.

This is the sharpest Lens in the Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lineup. Most people know that. What many don't know, is that it's probably the fastest focusing lens of all the MFT lenses. It's also one of the fastest, and the fastest lens with the fastest auto focus. And it also has image stabilization. It's perfect! It has a manual aperture ring, dedicated switch for manual versus auto focus--I just leave it on because it works so well. The only thing not to like is the price. I bought mine as a display model and paid $1040 for it. I've seen them sell for in the $900 range. If you see one for around $1000 buy and you will never look back. If you see one for around $1000 buy and you will never look back. It will instantly become your favorite lens. Why should you not buy it? There are many good lenses in this focal length that are almost as fast, much lighter, and these are all fine lenses, but they are not the best for sharpness, focus speed, and many do not include image stabilization. Bokeh is the word that is associated with this lens. Go to Amazon and see my review there for some pictures. It creates a more three dimensional feel than any other lens on any other focal length. Perhaps the 25mm f/1.4 comes close. And I understand Olympus has come out with a 25mm f/1.2. Neither of these has image stabilization. IF you need orespeed than this, the Voightlander Nocton manual focus lenses are f/0.95. Finally, this lens makes women swoon and melt in your arms. You will have to carry a stick to beat them of. Final thoughts: I have nearly every Panasonic Leica lens in the MFT, including the 45mm Leica Macro--which I also like immensely. This Nocticron is still head and shoulder above the rest. I love it and want to be buried with it.

I recently rented a Panasonic Lumix 42.5 f/1.2 lens from Lensrentals. It was so easy and the service was great. That particular lens is an expensive one and by renting it for a week, I was able to "test drive" it for a thorough evaluation. Lensrentals made it so easy. The lens was delivered to my workplace. When I was finished, I simply placed the lens back into its protective carrier and then into the original box. I used tape provided by Lensrentals to seal the box and placed the shipping label they provided over the original label. I took it to the Fedex pick up (in this case my neighborhood Walgreen's) and had the receipt messaged to me. I highly recommend Lensrentals. I will be using them again.

This lens will always be my favorite. The photos that it spits out make me smile every time. If you're considering it, just know that I likely will never sell my G9 because of this lens. Incredible sharpness edge to edge, I get excited with every photo I snap because I know how good this lens can turn a picture. If I had to pick 1 lens, and I have the olympus pro lenses, and several leica lenses, this is the easiest choice for THE one.

I was just curious if this lens was still available--I'm thrilled that it is. I've shot thousands of images with this lens, mostly inside dimly lit bars or on the streets at night. It simply makes me swoon when I see what it gives me. At f/1.2 my DOF is understandably short, but I always seem to keep my subjects in crystalline focus but with such a creamy background. Just luscious. And, on the occasions when I do portrait work, their eyes can be super-sharp but slowly taper off to a nice soft focus at the ears. It is simply a gorgeous lens. A bit heavy? Yes. But holding it, it just feels like the precision instrument which it truly is. If you're thinking about buying one, just do it--you won't regret it.
Tack sharp, creamy bokeh, beautiful color renditions (worth 5+ stars). However the frustration is the 'a la' Leica metal hood, and non locking [A] f/stop position that will easily move when using the lens. The hood should have been a quality resilient plastic, with a twist bayonet reversible mount. Further insult, is the plastic ring in the shade with a bad glue that will ooze when exposed to natural heat/warmth! The lock knob is just AWFUL.
Buy it. Get yours before they stop making them. If you want the best, then this is it. Just phenomenal. For portraits, there is nothing better on micro four thirds. This lens on any Panasonic micro four thirds is the reason for going MFT.(I shoot/own Nikon D3/D3x/D4s/D810 - so yeah I love my 200f/2.0 on the D3x, but this is comparable and it's $15k less (sure used now $4k) and one tenth the size and weight.)Have a good one.
I'd like to address this to people like me who started out poor and are in better circumstances. I know all about compromising. I did it constantly for years. The law of diminishing returns is a real and inescapable thing. But after having exposed maybe four images with this lens I can tell you it's astonishingly good and if you're a professional or committed amateur who can afford it just for God's sake get it. There are pretty good alternatives-from Panny and Olympus both, and I'm sure others-but this is quite simply the best lens I've ever used and I've used scores of them. Wide-open sharpness, bokeh, contrast, it's all there. If you need or want the best portrait-length lens for the system, just for Christ's sake buy it. You won't regret it.
This is, by far, the best lens in the Micro Four Thirds system, the one that might even convert some full-frame shooters. With an astonishing F/1.2 maximum aperture, this lens can render incredible depth-of-field whilst maintaining razor-sharp detail in very low, natural light. Sensational all-metal build quality with a dedicated aperture control-ring make this lens a joy to use.
for the better part of the last three years I have salivated over this lens and red no less than 50 reviews about it and watched no less than three or four dozen YouTube videos about it as well. Finally ironed enough to pull the trigger. I had bought the voigtlander lens first because it was slightly Cheaper by a few hundred dollars. Although that is a great lens I knew that I would need this lens for some of my photography needs where auto focus was needed. I sold the voigtlander and then pulled the trigger on this lens. No matter how many times I had read what is the top lens for the micro 4/3 system this lens is always number one and now I understand why. It is the game changer that everyone says it is. Everything is incredible. from being able to shoot handheld stabilize video on my gh5 but also just having the g85 on my hip as a second camera with this lens on it I have the power of incredible photos and video clips at everything I shoot. It is by far the best lens investment I have made for as long as I have had this system. If you're wondering if you should pull the trigger trust me it is everything it's supposed to be and more. My only wish is that the Panasonic folks would develop a similar 17.5 1.2 lens to match it. Then life would be perfect. Happy shopping
I rented this lens some years back to photograph a wedding. It was good then. I finally bought it this year. My copy is even nicer than the one I rented. The thing is so sharp I get moire patterns all over the photo at f/1.2 (on a non-AA sensor), and it renders people and faces really well. I also discovered it photographs flowers well, but that's not as important.
