I'm a long-time Canon shooter (for still images) but stepped out and got a Panasonic GX85 a few years ago for occasional video work. I was more than impressed. As my needs have grown on the video side, I had my eye on the G9. It was Panasonic's attempt to make a camera for still shooters, but it had a number of fantastic video features. You can't change the fact that it is a M43 sensor, which means pushing the ISO for better low light performance just doesn't work, and you're not going to have the same bokeh that you might get on a full-frame sensor. If you can get over those hang-ups (which are way too easy to have) - a few have them for good reason, but for most, it is not an issue - you'll be blown away at what this camera can do. The sensor aside, you're getting a $2k camera for $1k. If you're a hybrid shooter, I don't know that you can find anything close to this in terms of overall value.

With a chance of using an Olympus EM1 MkI, and later the EM1 MkII of which I own, I found the layout, size, weight, and ability more than I could hope for., Both truly superb and capable cameras, especially the latter EM1 MkII. I then had the chance of borrowing a friend's Panasonic Lumix G9, as well as his GX8. Both very impressive, quick focusing, the menu is slightly easier to pick up and learn compared to the Olympus models. Best of all though, was the layout, size, and layout of all the controls on the G9. It instantly felt at home in my large but disabled hand. Something I found an issue on the EM1's, which caused me to order a slightly larger rubber eyecup. This is not needed on the Pan Lumix G9, as its width and depth are perfect. I also like the position of the on / off switch, and the quick access buttons on the top r/h that control both WB, ISO & Exp. Very handy, similar to both Nikons and Canons I've used but better placed. It also handles varying light ranging from ultra-bright to almost pitch black and copes with being caught out in inclement weather, such as the snow early on in the year. To sum this up, I was that impressed, I purchased a new Panasonic Lumix G9, and I'm selling the Oly EM1 MkII.

Brought this camera to get started with wildlife photography" and paired it with a Panasonic Leica 100-400mm lens. I have been learning all its features for this hobby and have had good results. Taking wildlife stills is very easy with the mechanical and electronic shutter speeds. The AFC for birds in motion takes allot of practice to master. The easiest way to get that keeper picture is using 6K photo which pre-records up to 80 in total frames before and after you fully depress the shutter button. To get the prerecording started you have to half press and the green dot appears on screen, fully press the shutter button for it to capture all of the images when the bird takes flight. I gave the camera four stars because with 6k photo you can only jpeg files.

I love almost everything about the G9 apart from the frustrating continuous autofocus for subjects like "Birds In Flight" (unfortunately one of my favourite subjects) and fast aircraft at a distance (small target) which give a fairly mediocre success rate. Unfortunately I have had to purchase an additional heavy and inconvenient DSLR just to overcome this issue. If the G9 could focus as well as a Nikon D500 (or Sony A9) for these type of subjects I would sell the DSLR in a flash. If I could only change one thing about the G9 this would be it. If this improved focussing could be extended to video as well, like Canon's, no hunting, dual pixel autofocus then even better. Finally I would never say no to a few more sensor pixels BUT NOT if this meant worse low light high ISO performance, I would rather have better low light performance than more pixels. In every other respect the G9 is a fabulous camera which I love using and the overall small system size and weight mean I am far more likely to be carrying it with me for the opportunity of a once in a lifetime shot. If "Birds In Flight" photos are not your thing then it deserves a 5 star rating. For me it is "Almost perfect".

The G9 has an in-built feature called Live Cropping that uses the 4k capability to create a smooth pan in 1080p. This feature alone lightens your gear load in a big way. Also, USB3 charging allowing external power from a large battery if needed in addition to the huge internal battery. The G9 does this right: If plugged into external power, the internal battery isn't used at all so you've got a full battery when you unplug from external power as opposed to sony which will have expended the internal battery even while plugged into external power. Lumix cameras have long been considered future-proof and the G9 is probably the best example of that.

My goal is to try to master the features of this camera. As a grandpa who grew up using film and wet darkrooms and the classic Pentax K 1000, this is challenging for me. This camera is beyond feature rich. Thankfully for others who are challenged, Utube has tons of professionals teaching me how to use these features. It is a solid camera and very intuitive for an amateur like me. The grip is especially nice since I use a wrist strap only. I love the top screen and the menus are relatively easy to use. I watch several YouTubers who raved about this camera, but I resisted because I was a diehard Olympus fan. When it went on sale recently I finally gave in, and wow... what a fantastic camera. I was most worried about the autofocus, so much internet chatter about it being contrast only... well, it's lightning fast, and highly accurate. I do street and event photography with it, mostly with face detect AF, and I think I've deleted about 3 shots in the last month, shooting almost every day, for missed focus. It's that good. I see no difference between the G9 and my Olympus cameras in AF speed or accuracy for stills. I was most worried about the autofocus, so much internet chatter about it being contrast only... well, it's lightning fast, and highly accurate. I do street and event photography with it, mostly with face detect AF, and I think I've deleted about 3 shots in the last month, shooting almost every day, for missed focus. It's that good. I see no difference between the G9 and my Olympus cameras in AF speed or accuracy for stills. And all my Olympus lenses work perfectly, so feel free to mix and match with the phenomenal m4/3 lens selection we have.Built like a D300, rock solid, great grip, great battery life. The viewfinder is beautiful, and has 3 magnification settings with a button, why doesn't any other makers do things like that? Brilliant for glasses wearers.Way more programmable to your needs than my Olympus cameras. So many buttons you can program I actually turned 2 of them off, it's too much to keep track of in my simple mind.Jpegs are great, AWB nails it every time. So much for the "Panasonic doesn't have good color science" myth.If you're debating between this G9 and the EM1 mk3, to me it's a no brainer... with the G9 you get a better overall camera and save enough money for another lens. I couldn't be happier with it. This camera is a legend.
I bought the G9 as I shoot both stills and video. As I'm doing more freelance work, I wanted a camera that could do both well and there is something about the picture that Panasonic cameras produce that is so much more pleasing than the Sony cameras I use for my regular work. Points for improvement: While the DFD focus is fantastic in good lighting conditions and for stills, it is still unacceptable for video as the autofocus pulses almost constantly when shooting, even in properly exposed conditions. It can also be really slow to grab focus and often with face detection on, it just refuses to grab focus until I press the autofocus button on the back of the camera, despite being in continuous autofocus. Right now I am must have the mobile phone attached or use the tiny screen on the Ronin to try and see what I'm capturing; I'd prefer to just look at the back of the camera. The next issue, which really surprised me, is that the G9 doesn't tell me what colour temperature it registered when setting custom white balance. This means for Multicam setup I can not set all the cameras to the same temp. The last, and final niggling point is that it would be amazing to disable video record from the shutter button. It's weird that it is possible to disable the dedicated video record button but then not to be able to disable shutter button for video. The button is so sensitive (amazing for photography) but I have so many short clips from tapping it to wake the camera up or just hitting it accidentally; not a huge issue but also one that seems an easy feature to add. For stills - an amazing camera. For video, there is so much to like, especially the quality of the video, but that autofocus is just too distracting.

I found the Z50 while compact and well laid out to be somewhat restrictive, AF focus points were not customizable, and no ibis. I made the jump after watching hours of reviews and informational videos on YouTube. The features far surpass what I had seen many full frame advertised as having.The ergonomics of the Panasonic LUMIX G9 make it wonderful to use, deep hand grip, convenient power switch around the shutter button, AF lever placement is wonderful for quickly switching between single, continuous, and manual focus. Initially I did not think much of the lcd top plate but that has since changed and I use it regularly for wide angle landscape photos.Other features that this beast of a camera comes with that I haven’t seen anywhere else include a night mode and monochrome live view.Starting with Night mode, I have used this at night to save my eyes from the bright EVF and touchscreen. Night mode lets you choose if one or both screens are changed to a red and black virtual boy style display. This is also great for astrophotography in dark zone areas.The monochrome live view option has been wonderful while shooting on bright sunny days, especially when taking a photo of the clouds or sunset. This does not change your JPEG settings to monochrome, files will still use your selected color profile.One of the biggest features for me by far is the ridiculously comfortable eye piece. The eye relief is top notch.I have had no issues shooting at reasonable ISO values in dark environments due to the amazing IBIS.Overall I love this camera and would recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone looking to get into photography or looking to switch to the M4/3 ecosystem.

I got into micro 4/3 because of the size and weight of this system...Had the G7, then GH5, then G9 and finally I bought the Olympus OMD 10 Mark 4, which I love for it's size...then I realized that the image quality is 97% as good as the G9 for a portion of the money and size!! I also realized that I would never choose the G9 when I was going out to take pictures...then I realized that the G9 is humongous and heavy, which is the reason I got out of full frame cameras. So, I went full circle and bought the Sony A7c, which is very small compared to the G9. The kit lens alone that came with the camera is sharper and better in low light than any of the lenses on the micro 4/3 system, including the PRO series!!
