I came from Sony's APS-C cameras and primarily am reviewing the GH5 Mark II as a video camera.Overall:The GH5 Mark II feels like a modern camera and delivers exceptionally cinematic performance in almost every way. It has the new S-series menu systems, usb-c, larger batteries supports professional video recording options. If you never owned a GH5, , then realize the camera is a little smaller than it appears in photos, which I think is a good thing. You'll need fast cards to capture the high quality formats (C4K 10-bit 4:2:2 etc.) but the good thing is you don't need any external recorders.Image quality:The GH5 Mark II out of the box using Cine-D or V-Log L picture profiles results in image that is so much more flexible than Sony's 8-bit format. The color science and rendering also feels more natural than the GH3 which I also owned. In my opinion ISO is useful up to 6400 with clean up and the dynamic range holds up at higher ISOs pretty well.S5 vs GH5 Mark IIThe S5 and the GH5 Mark ii are almost the same price, so I'll explain why a GH5 Mark ii might be more suitable for certain people. Don't let the MFT size sensor fool you. Shallow DOF is easily attainable. But it's not even always desirable as it's less of a concern for filmmaking. In that way, the MFT system seems ideal.I found it easy to adapt to other lens systems, especially for anamorphic shooting. MFT and vintage lens are affordable compared to L-mount lens. With a 25mm F1.8 the shallow DOF is substantial. But I also tested it with a Nikon 50mm f1.4 and 0.71x speedbooster and it feels like I I may be meeting or exceeding the DOF of Super 35mm (APS-C sized sensors). As a bonus, the GH5 Mark II has better IBIS than the S5 by a large margin. And you also get Open Gate anamorphic mode which uses the entire sensor to capture video.

If you're looking for a new MFT body and you shoot stills and video, this is a great camera. I've considered saving up for a GH6 or an OM1, but reviews point out that the GH6 does great, high quality video and good stills and an OM1 does great stills and good video. The GH5M2 does great video and great stills.I'm a retired photojournalist, now shooting both photos and video for the Master Gardeners and the Habitat for Humanity and other charities. My videos tend to go to YouTube or are shown in classrooms or fundraisers. Of course, the GH5M2 shoots 4K, the GH6 goes up to 6K and you can set up a rig on the OM1 that will record ProRes Raw. I simply don't need that. I work in HD video and raw stills. The Panasonic GH5 M2 is the best camera I've ever used.

Coming from a GH4. this was a HUGE upgrade.More FPSMore resolution with anamorphic (up to 6k)More slomo (From 96fpd to 180 fps read out)More light sensinbilityMore control over audio.Better interfaceAmazing connectivity for streaming.Dark magic last longing batteries lol....If you have a good invest on M43 lenses this an amazon upgrade even coming from the GH5/GH5S due price and interface/chipset upgrade.GH6 will be around $700 more so that why we decide go to this.If this is your first hybrid camera and you LOVE Panasonic, you should check first the S2 or so...
I am a novice with this stuff so take my review as it is. I think the cam is ver good for vid and pics. I use the iA mode which is the intelligent auto mode that sets the best settings for you in terms of color tone and brightness. If you are a novice like me you’ll have to search YouTube vids and experiment with it to get better.I’ll take off a star because I got in touch with lumix tech dept as I am having trouble pulling up the vid clips when connected to my MacBook Air but they have yet to get to get back to me after a week to assist.
I ordered the GH5 ii on sale as a third camera to go with my two GH5s. The new menu system is great but somehow the footage looks noticeably worse than my GH5. The colors just don't look natural and there seems to be some smearing in the skin tones, shadows just look bad. I thought it might have been the noise reduction so I turned it down a couple of notches which made the image look a bit more natural but iso 3200 which I never had problems with is now nearly unusable at how grainy it is. The Cine D 2 is also unusable. It looks so blotchy and seeing some weird color shifting. I want to love this camera but I have had nothing but issues with it since I got it. I want to exchange it for another to see if its just my camera or is the OG GH5 better.
Bought this initially for the extra stabilisation since I mainly film aerial subjects. It turns out this is essentially a new camera as opposed to a GH5 upgrade and now I'm selling my GH5. Color science has improved, raw stills are now 14bit and Panasonic have added DR into the highlights creating much better roll-off and toning. Some of the profiles like L Neo Classic and Flat give interesting options especially in able to give a Kodak Portra look when printed on paper. Stills auto focus is lightening fast and looks very capable in video though I prefer manual. Excellent cammera and value.
I owned a GH5 for 2+years and I felt like it was a bad dog - fighting me at every turn, but still a trusty companion. I tried the BMPCC4K for 2years and wanted desperately to love it, but just couldn't get there (FCPX's incompatibility with BRAW probably had something to do with that). But the GH5 II is Panasonic perfection. Here's why:The Menus. Everything is where you expect it to be.6k Open Gate. I'm a one-man band, conducting long-form interviews. Open gate gives me the ability to re-frame for headroom in post as the subject fidgets in their chair. Essential.Unlimited Record Time. Like I said, I film long interviews (1.5hrs+). Not having to stop to press record is glorious.Usable autofocus. I put this baby on an Edelkrone SliderONE for interviews. It locks on the subject's near eye and doesn't flinch.Unlimited Power. You don't have to blow $100 on some silly adapter. The included USB-C thingy plugs right into the wall.Sensor Size. FF = hype, especially if you're going for a cinematic look. Super35 is the cinematic gold standard. Crop from S35 to M43 is only 1.5. So f2.8 on M43 = f4.2 on S35. Most feature films live between f3.5-f5.6. So you can get cinematic DoF with the GH5 II.Audio. I use the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 mic adapter. It is (almost) perfect. (I wish the knobs had a little more resistance to them, they feel slippery and it makes me nervous.) Single shotgun mic with a y-adapter gives me great audio with a safety channel. BMPCC4K can't do that.V-Log L. It's included and it looks great as long as you're in 10bit.I love, love, love the GH5 II. It is totally underrated.(The GH6 is $500 more and what do you get? An extra stop of dynamic range at ISO2000 + bad streaking around windows and other bright light sources + mis-matched memory card slots + a body the size of a freight truck? Pffft. No thanks.)What would make the GH5 II better?- Full v-log, like its Panasonic FF brothers.- ProRes Proxy. That's right, I said proxy. I shoot 6k open gate and deliver HD on YouTube and Bluray. Proxy is plenty. I like my file sizes small and easily digestible, thank you.
The GH5 is still a great hybrid camera with awesome (4K) video features and now it's a very good deal, especially used (in near mint condition for close to $1,000). If one knows how to optimize its AF, including the installation of the latest firmware, this is quite usable too. I have been using 2 of them with Panasonic pro lenses for shooting indoor interviews and small products in 4K video with ease of use and high quality results. Until I have a need for higher than 4K they are going to remain my cameras of choice. My "no" for "easy to use" is not because the camera is complicated but because it has so many features that one has to spend the time necessary to learn how to use it to its best.
I've been shooting mirrorless cameras since the Lumix G1 came out. I've had a mix of Olympus, Panasonic and Sony micro four thirds (MFT) and full frame cameras, and always seem to come back to Panasonic because of their ease of use, good menu system, and versatility. This was my third Lumix MFT. I'm not a video photographer, so the GH5 is a bit of overkill for me, and I'm in the process of replacing it with a G9. I generally have both a full frame and a MFT and use a lot of adapted film camera lenses. This combo makes each lens have two effective focal lengths. I think the image quality of the MFT format equals that of the full-frame in good light. I highly recommend the GH5 for advanced armature photographers, and for a travel camera for professionals if equipped ... MoreI've been shooting mirrorless cameras since the Lumix G1 came out.
