The cost and weight may put you off, but honestly the optics are flawless. Razor sharp, no CA whatsoever, no breathing for video. Just a fantastic lens with no equal at this price point, and perhaps the best autofocus 50mm aside from Leica.

I rented this lens for a wedding, I used it mostly for video with the DS1. By far the best lens Ive ever used, I shot a lot on 1.4 and my subjects were still incredibly sharp with silky smooth background. The worst thing about this lens is that it makes all my other pictures and video look like garbage (as they were shot with different lenses). This lens sets a new standard in quality. Now Im saving up! Very happy with its performance - coupled with the DS1 is a match made in heaven!

This Lens is the best 50mm 1.4 I have owned in over 40 years of photography. The image quality is superb (acutance, corrections, bokeh, contrast) and the AF is terrific - lightning quick and confident. The overall handling is a pleasure.the lens is not small - but you get what you carry for. On my Panasonic S1R it sings.Highly Recommended.

I just got back from spending a week in Tahoe shooting content with this lens. I've shot with high end glass my entire career including Zeiss, Hasselblad, and Phase One and can tell you that this 50mm 1.4 is optically superior to any lens I've ever shot with. The price tag is high, but it's what you pay for optics on this level. The rendering in fine detail is incredible, focus is very fast, manual focus has a really nice feel to it, build quality is crazy high end. It has an 11 bladed aperture and it really comes into play in the bokeh quality which is buttery and beautiful like medium format. The previous best lens I had ever used was the Zeiss 50mm f2 Makro prime and this lens has it beat.
I have received my 50mm f1.4 as long as my SL2 2 x weeks ago.Since then it has not left my Leica. I haven't even tried the Leica 24-70 mm from the bundle I purchased yet. This 50 mm is heavy yes, but the images I get from it are popping ... and crisp. It focuses fast, even in low light. And with the SL 2 face detect the eyes are in focus when portrait shooting . My keeper rate is much higher than with my Fuji X-H1 with the 50 mm f1.0 combo.I love the colors and contrast I get from the Leica and Panasonic combined.I am extremely pleased with this lens ... this is my first Panasonic experience and I really love it.
I own all of the S Pro lenses currently available. This 50mm lens, by far surpasses them all, as it should, being a prime lens. What I had hoped for and never expected to see however, is a new level of design and artistic technical perfection that may have only been attained by a few lenses ever manufactured. (Bold statement) .... Probably somewhat classic in advance optical design, and seemingly not compromising in cost, Lumix, I believe, opted to use complex lenses designed and ground from more expensive traditional superb optical glass to produce this lens. Lumix has achieved a truly Perfect lens and in ALL aspects. It exceeds the 100+ great lenses I have owned in past 50 years of shooting 35mm to 8x10 Sinars. I had not used a 50mm lens since I first started. These particular prime lenses were very tainted to me because they have always been soft in just about all brands. Sigma changed that with their 50mm Art but this LUMIX lens is on another level even from that. It’s just razor sharp but yet with super soft fall off. It’s an expensive lens but if you value this level of quality you will want to have it in your collection. The build quality is outstanding.
I am coming from the Sony A7RIII and been with Sony for the last 10 years and switch to the S1R this April and have not looked back. The user experience and the output I get from the S1R is just superb. When I had the A7RIII the Sony/Zeiss 50mm F1.4 ZA stayed glued to my camera. So when I switched over to the S1R I needed a 50mm so naturally I picked up the Panasonic 50mm and boy I am happy I did.The color, sharpness, rendering (it has a Leica rendering to it) the micro-contrast, bokeh and the handling is just aswome. And the manual clutch is simply a nice touch. The CA is non-existing, that was the problem I had with the Sony/Zeiss 50mm; it didn't perform good wide open. (please don't get me wrong, the Zeiss/Sony 50mm is an underrated good lens, but not a good ... MoreI am coming from the Sony A7RIII and been with Sony for the last 10 years and switch to the S1R this April and have not looked back. (please don't get me wrong, the Zeiss/Sony 50mm is an underrated good lens, but not a good as the Panasonic 50mm F1.4 Pro)FYI: I originally brought this lens new for $2300, but I returned it because it had a cosmetic imperfection, but a used one became available for $1950, mint condition, so I got that one instead. (I am equally happy)Is it worth it? To me, yes, but to others it may not. The Sigma Art 50 will be plenty good for most people when the native version becomes available. I got the Panasonic because I wasn't certain if the Sigma would be good enough to resolve the 47.3 MB from the S1R, I am not certain if the native sigma AF will work as good as the native Panasonic (it should because they have the L-Mount protocols) and I couldn't wait.If you are on the fence on getting this lens or the Sigma, I would say just rent both to see what works best for you.I hope this post helps someone.Thank you for reading
This is a stunningly good lens. I literally sat before my Retina monitor with my jaw dropped when I saw the first files from this lens on an S1R.The lens draws with magnificent acutance AND dimensionality. It does rely upon a large amount of software correction of distortion, yet the edges and corners still look good.If the heavy weight, and large size and price are manageable for you, it will reward you with files equal to or surpassing the very best nifty fifties out there (it visibly bests the Sony 50mm 1.4 Planar and Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art).
Wow. Razor sharp from wide open, no coma anywhere, excellent silent autofocus. Manual focus clutch makes it great for video with almost no focus breathing. It's expensive, but this is a lens that has absolutely no faults outside of it's weight. Considering the weight and cost of Zeiss Otus and cinema lenses, this is a great deal.
