This book was able to keep my attention throughout the whole story! I definitely recommend as it provides a fictional reality similar to what our society is heading towards.
I loved the book, it is now one of my favourites. The book came in fantastic condition, although it's well thumbed now as I have read it and lent it to several of my friends! Very happy :)
Love the writing! Compelling! Read twice now.
I re-read this book recently and it's beautifully written (along with the sequel). Really makes you think, and Butler composes a very believable future world. Lauren is a wonderfully crafted character- strong yet fallible, and this becomes even more obvious in the sequel. Butler's descriptions of how Earthseed finds root (har har) really... is so real I almost start believing it's already out there somewhere, gathering believers as we speak. (mild plot spoiler) The only thing I never quite felt convinced about was her relationship with Bankole. I understood that they loved each other but it was difficult to get that impression from her perspective, so much.
Let's say it's more horrific than expected. It's a warning of what we're in for if we don't pay attention to those less well off, if we ignore climate change, if in this country of individualism we think everyone is capable of lifting themselves up on their own, if we don't show more humanity toward one another, and stop the rampant hate speach. And most importantly, if we continue to abuse nature.
Heard good reviews about Parable of the Sower. Cant wait to read this book.

All across America, people are homeless, hungry, and resentful of those that were lucky enough to inside of walled compounds. There are promises of jobs, but at wages no one can afford to take, with inflation climbing daily. Lauren Olamina, a precocious African-American minister's daughter, is a 16 year old, and has the often dubious abilities of an empath. Lauren is one of the few survivors in her compound after it is attacked and destroyed by the outsiders. She has had a desperate urge to escape the confines of her enclave for quite awhile, knowing that it would be annihilated by the outsiders, has had thoughts and plans to leave the compound for a safer place, though not to the promised jobs, but north, to Alaska, if possible. One day, the walled cul-de-sac where Lauren lives is overcome by a band of "outsiders" - the homeless, the violent, the crazy, the hungry and those on a hallucinogenic drug called Pyro, as it makes the dance of flames irresistible to those who take There is arson everywhere, and there is no rapid response from the police or the fire department, both agencies require upfront fees for service. There's not enough water to extinguish a massive fire, anyway. She meets with two other refugees from the cul-de-sac and Lauren leads amazing, difficult and wondrous journey, to reach safety. She has to face the world outside, with all of it's violence and bloodshed, where life is cheap and Lauren and feel every knife sliced into another's bowels, every pistol shot to the head of another. She leads a tiny band of followers through more than a thousand miles of hell on earth, she takes on the role of prophet, with the goal of finding and building a "Promised Land" - the land of Earthseed. The Parable of the Sower was written in 1993 and is remarkably prescient about the world we inhabit today. Our way of life will soon disappear, with global warming, extinction of fossil fuels - we will be as the old grandmothers and grandfathers in Lauren's cul-de-sac, remembering the good ol'days and believing that somehow, they will return. Follow this up with the "Parable of the Talents", the second in the series and just as good. When Octavia Butler died much too soon on February 26, 2006, after falling and striking her head Friday on a walkway outside her home. Her father was a shoeshine man who died when she was a child, her mother was a maid who brought her along on jobs, yet Octavia Butler rose from these humble beginnings to become one of the country's leading writers - a female African American pioneer in the white, male domain of science fiction.
