Patagonia Black Hole 70L Wheeled Duffel Bag Black
Tough and highly weather-resistant, the durable midsized Black Hole Wheeled Duffel 70L protects your gear from the scuffs and scrapes of wayward journeys. Its zippered U-shaped lid—with a pair of zippered internal mesh pockets on the underside to keep small items organized—offers quick-and-easy access to the main compartment. A zippered exterior pocket provides a secure and handy spot for your boarding pass, energy bar or paperback. The sturdy framesheet protects the duffel from baggage-handler abuse and keeps your Black Hole upright, even when it’s loaded to the max. Oversized wheels deliver a smooth ride, whether you’re crossing the tarmac or traversing a cobblestone street. Carrying options include the main webbing handles (with snap closure), a two-position telescoping handle and the two haul loops on either end. You can lash additional gear to the outside with the four corner-mounted daisy chains. Made from 14-oz 900-denier 100% postconsumer recycled polyester ripstop (22% solution-dyed) with a TPU-film laminate and lined with 3.3-oz 200-denier 100% recycled polyester with a polyurethane coating. Both fabrics have a DWR (durable water repellent) finish.

I own a lot of Patagonia gear, and with this one exception, it's always the best of its kind. But this bag isn't great. I'm writing from Turkey, after traveling through 5 countries with this thing. The materials are good, and the construction seems sturdy enough. Two problems have become clear. One, there is no good way to lock the zippers. Most bags of this type have overlapping lock holes so you can easily slip a luggage lock on. Not this one! Best you can do is slip a lock through each zipper tab, which is much less secure. Second, and much worse, the main zipper doesn't go around the edge of the bag, but is a few inches in from the edge, meaning that there is a large overhang on three sides when the bag's open. This sort of negates the whole convenience of having a top-open design like this, which should be easy access to the contents of the bag without disrupting all the other stuff. Swing and a miss on this one.

My wife had one of these bags and suggested I get one for an upcoming trip. I had some sticker shock with the price but found a discount coupon and ordered one. We just returned from the trip and the bag performed well. The rollers seem better than most bags we have. The handle retracts and extends easily. The internal zippered storage compartments are handy. The bag is a bit heavy but not more than expected considering it's durability and better quality materials. Hopefully the bag and its components will hold up over time and trips. The only negative is the price.

I was a little leery spending this much for a carry on bag without the benefit of test driving in person but I couldn't find the wheeled duffle anywhere near me. I have to say that I LOVE IT! One of the issues I have with traditional roller bags is they tend to fall forward and aren't grounded. This bag is solid and grounded with no threat of tipping. Also, it wheels super smoothly and is agile. I was worried going from a 4 roller to a 2 roller bag but despite not having quite the dexterity in maneuverability, the bag makes up for it with a smooth, easy flow ride. I don't feel like I'm pulling or pushing the bag. It glides along with ease. And since I use packing cubes, the one compartment suits my needs. I've only used it for one trip so far but I think I am going ... I'm really not sure how to feel about my first review being deleted. Is Patagonia trying to cultivate a certain customer base and women who pack blankets and shoes are not the target market?Anyways, I've had this duffel and was initially disappointed in the size but I have since heavily embraced backpacking packing cubes and it helps a lot with the issues shutting the top and maximizing the space in the bag. Instead of putting things on top, I shove them into the corners and then use the straps to shut the bag and it shuts easily. Backpacking cubes are slippery and have a lot of give and the ones I use also are compressible. It's a great concept for separating clothes and gear or shoes or whatever. I also take trains a lot when I travel and try to put my carry on into my main bag so you aren't a target for thieves. I still wish I had gotten the larger version but I'll probably just get a split level suitcase and this will be good for trips that are straightforward with out a lot of different activities.

Bought this to replace my previous Patagonia luggage from circa 2009 that was starting to show its age and fall finally apart (including the interior coating thats flaking off on all my clothes). This era is unfortunately not as bulletproof. The lack of a separate storage compartment for shoes/kit/dirty gear on this iteration was a huge miss but I took the chance anyhow. And while its overall lighter, the material is already suspect. First trip through outbound baggage internationally, and theres a significant rub on the fabric that may eventually burn through, one of the wheel axles was bent (to the point where I had to bend it back to roll it properly), and by the return leg the other axle was off kilter. And no.. it was not an overly heavy bag nor packed to the gills.Ultimately, Im stuck with it at this point, but did not live up to the previous version on the first trip out the door and I have concerns about the longevity knowing how tough baggage can be in general. And this hasn't even seen an expedition or a proper remote shoot yet.. Recommend they either redesign completely, or move away from the Black Hole duffle as the platform for a piece of roller luggage.. or both (and I have a BH duffle, and its fantastic)
I have an original "rolling duffle" from Patagonia. Older than 10 years and the original design is so much better than the new ones which easily are, and named for "Black Hole". Maybe it is a joke? They are nothing more than a well made large trash bag, i.e. black hole. I agree with one of the reviewers who said you can't even open it fully because of the zipper length. The original bags had a large top exterior pocket you could access from the outside, say the size of a shoe box as well as a fantastic all around zipper near the frame that opens completely and you could pack in slacks/jeans/ coats that were well pressed upon arrival. TWO exterior pouches, made for a great bag! The new black hole bags offer NO exterior access of any use. LOL, on you own video it says ... MoreI have an original "rolling duffle" from Patagonia. LOL, on you own video it says you can stuff a power bar or boarding pass in the exterior pocket! Yes, right-o on that. Nothing at all more, like shoes, Dopp kit, last minute items, paperwork, books! Please go back to the drawing board on these rolling duffels. Sorry, I have to purchase a different brand to get some useable outside pockets so I don't have to lay down the entire suitcase flat whenever I need something. Very poor design. Thanks for reading and listening. I have been a loyal customer for 40ish years. No more Patagonia luggage. I have 3 original rolling duffels that are delaminating and Patagonia will not give me Guaranteed replacement they tout. Not a happy customer after all the years we Seniors have supported the growth of this company.
I just replaced a 100L black hole I bought back in 2006 with this one and Im devastated by the terrible quality. I used my old one nearly monthly for 15 years. The original one was a terrific bag- the wheels were the same as the ones they use for inline skates. It always remained upright even when poorly loaded. And it folded down low enough to be stored under my bed.The stitching finally gave out so I paid $90 to ship it back to Patagonia to get repaired. They sent me a credit for half the cost of the bag and then I had to wait for it to get restocked. I bought two actually- one for my daughter and I imagined all the places it would go with her. They arrived just in time for a three week trip to Paris. I was bummed that they are now designed to not fold down so I ... They arrived just in time for a three week trip to Paris. I was bummed that they are now designed to not fold down so I would need to find a new space to store very two big bags. And the wheels are cheap hard plastic which scuffed wood floors and are really loud. Worse- when packed with even a half load, it constantly falls over. And when we arrived in Paris, a wheel on both of the bags was bent out which made the bags fall over even more often. Im worried the wheels wont last another trip.Im so saddened that I sent back a bag I loved and that had lasted 15 years and invested in bags that are such terrible quality. .
I actually have the older 120L roller BH. It's held up super well over 7 years, and can hold a lot. As a new parent, the 120 can fit a pack-n-play crib folded up (doubt the 100 would though). Another reviewer noted that the 100 packed full usually stays under 50 lbs, the 120, well, I now carry a small luggage scale because it can be quite easy to go over 50 (which is a curse and a blessing). My only design request at this point would be to change the straps a little. The smaller BH duffles I have can be made into backpacks, the roller cannot. There are times when rolling is not a good option due to terrain or stairs. Maybe if the current handle straps had a shoulder protection sleeve I could attach over the webbing, or just a little padding, that would make the ... MoreI actually have the older 120L roller BH. Pros: Stylish. 100L bag can hold a ton.Cons: Too many design flaws. Not very durable.Ive had my Black Hole 100L wheeled duffle bag for 9 months and its already in worse shape than my 9 year old Dakine wheeled duffle. The bag looked great initially, but after a few months of (admittedly heavy) use, the lettering started to peel off. Cosmetic but still disappointing. The fact that the bag is water resistant was a big selling point, however, it already has multiple holes in the shell. Seemingly from sharp edges encountered during baggage handling.Didnt think about this being an issue with standing duffles, but no matter how you pack it (heavier items at the wheel end, lighter items at the handle end) the bag topples over if left unsupported. The Handles are like ... Seemingly from sharp edges encountered during baggage handling.Didnt think about this being an issue with standing duffles, but no matter how you pack it (heavier items at the wheel end, lighter items at the handle end) the bag topples over if left unsupported. The Handles are like standard gym bag handles and perform their desired function, but theyre held together by a coupe of buttons that always come unsnapped during transit which will eventually lead to one getting snagged on something and destroying the bag. Also the snaps get beat up from being directly on top of the bag, as baggage handlers always place bags upside down when loading and unloading for some odd reason. The biggest issue, and the deal breaker imo, is the wheel design. The wheels are too tall and too narrow. This design creates a situation where the wheel actually acts as leverage to bend and eventually break the axle. Ive had skateboard wheels (shorter/wider) on my previous bag for years with zero issue. Noticed a wheel was bent after my last trip, but didnt have time to sort it out. When I headed to the airport a couple of days later, the wheel no longer rolled. Its touching the side wall of the bag meaning Im dragging my bag this entire trip. Not great since Im moving around quite a bit.Unfortunately, I cant recommend this bag a new design is implemented.
I'll start by saying I love Patagonia. The quality is always the best. Although this is a nice travel bag, it is way too expensive and too small. I ordered 2 different wheeled bags for my husband's birthday trying to find the right one for a travel carry on. I have had the 45L size that Patagonia made years ago, and when I ordered the 40 I thought I was ordering the same bag. The 40 is just a tad smaller than the 45, however it makes a big difference when traveling for a few nights. Also, I could not believe the price of the bag for how small it is. The price had gone up within a few months of my 2 different orders, and the bag got smaller. Patagonia bring back the 45L on wheels.
