I can’t say enough good things about this jacket. I’ve owned it for about three years now and it’s still as warm and tough as the day I bought it. It’s accompanied me on week-long backcountry trips, weekend-warrior camp outings, cold fall hikes, casual city strolls and everything in between. In really cold temps, it’s still easy to layer and the internal chest pocket is great for keeping a snack from freezing on a cold hike. It can be rolled up into about the size of a 40oz bottle and still retains its puff and warmth after being unrolled which makes it great for when you need to add or shed layers when you’re outside. I’m 6’2” and 180lbs and the medium fits me perfectly.

Comfy but fragile and leaks down like crazy

Pros: Stylish, packs down well, comfy and warm.Cons: Unbelievably fragile and leaks down everywhere. It’s a nice jacket, but definitely not worth the price. Patagonia usually is known for their quality, but this is really surprising in it’s poor craftsmanship. I bought it a year ago and with moderate use there are now dozens of spots it is leaking down. I sent it in to be restitched but they said there was nothing they could do. Very disappointed considering the price point.

Good to wear underneath shell, or for use daily

Used everyday for school, there is abrasion on the lower back area and hands, insulation has started to come out - this is a common problem for down jackets. I would recommend a puff coat with less stitching for daily wear, so there are less places for insulation to come out, or outside objects to get caught on it. Comparable jackets are the atom lt, I have one and it's a bit less warm, but more durable. The size is pretty accurate. I'd also recommend a darker color, as the areas that touch things may get discolored quickly. Mine's dark blue in small.

New Style, new problems
12 December 2022

This updated version of the down sweater is puzzling. First the positive the jacket is a bit longer in the back which to me is a bonus so when you move around or bend over your body stays covered. The negatives: Not at all warm below 50F, bleeds feathers like crazy, wrist has no elastic (which was present in previous versions) so any wind easily compromises the jacket and reduces its ability to keep you warm. Overall given the increased price tag over the older version this update is a huge miss. I have cheaper jackets with a similar fit that keep me warmer and dont have any of the aforementioned issues.

New looser fit is a big bummer + a tad hazardous
11 November 2022

Loved all my previous down sweaters, but not this one. This jacket is wildly different: the sizing is wildly different, even from my newer 2020 model. The sleeves have no elastic. The sleeves are so loose they resemble the fit of a bathrobe. The loose sleeves have resulted in a few dangerous situations during outdoor activities, sliding down over my hands, etc. Only wish I had read the reviews before replacing. For those considering buying this version of the jacket for casual wear, be aware you won't stay warm because cold air, rain or any weather element finds its way up and INTO the loose sleeve. What a bummer, not sure who at Patagonia greenlit this design, but hope they read all the review and make some adjustments. Will need to return and purchase an REI ... MoreLoved all my previous down sweaters, but not this one. Not Durable
11 May 2023

I’ve been a member of REI since 1978 so I’ve been around a while. This is my first review, and it won’t be pretty. On 21 Mar 2023 I purchased a Patagonia Down Sweater, item # 2085920023. I researched and a few reviews claimed the outer shell was one of the more durable ones. The other day I returned from a 9-day motorcycle camping trip. The only good thing I can say about it is it kept me warm and fit well. I’d wear the jacket for a few hours in themorning, then again in the evening when we were setting up camp. If I wasn’t wearing it, it was in an Enlightened Equipment quilt bag, then inside the top bag of my well-known-manufacturer luggage. Although I did wear it one night in my sleeping bag as I gave my quilt to someone who was cold. I just finished patching 3 ... MoreI’ve been a member of REI since 1978 so I’ve been around a while. Although I did wear it one night in my sleeping bag as I gave my quilt to someone who was cold. I just finished patching 3 holes and there are 4 spots where down is leaking out of sewn seams. This is ridiculous. I worked construction and the well-known-manufacturer down vest I had was much more durable…by a long shot. And it was 1/5 the cost. Not that there’s anything wrong with lattes, but if all you’re going to do is wear this to town while going for lattes, this should be OK. But if you plan on taking this into the wilderness, I’d look for another brand. I realize REI has a 1-year satisfaction return policy, but I probably won’t take advantage of it. For one thing it just doesn’t feel right as I did use the jacket, plus I’d have to look for another jacket. But I’d bet the farm I won’t buy another Patagonia down jacket or sweater. I gave this a 2 rating because while it did keep me warm, at the rate it's falling apart I'll be wearing a duct tape covered jacket in a year.

Prone to tearing

I own the discontinued Tasmanian Teal colour of the Down Sweater. It's warm, light and very comfortable, but extremely prone to holes in the fabric. I've not worn the Down Sweater jacket in the outdoors because I prefer the ease of washing the synthetic jackets. Ive mostly worn it during winter and the colder shoulder seasons to and from work, and at home at my desk to avoid using the heater. My jacket has surprisingly quickly formed a large hole under the wrists, has formed other minor small holes on the arms, and has been leaking feathers at the seam mid way up the right arm. The only abrasion this jacket has seen is from my desk and wearing a bag, which is disappointing for a fairly expensive down jacket from an outdoors brand. If you are thinking about getting a ... MoreI own the discontinued Tasmanian Teal colour of the Down Sweater. My Nano puff which i consistently wear outdoors, and to and from work (before getting the Down Sweater), is faring much better and is a few years older. Albeit subjectively, the Nano Puff feels just as warm likely thanks to the box stitch which better manages the fill from moving around, and is much cheaper.Sorry Patagonia, in my experience, this is not a great jacket when it comes to longevity.

Same quality, better fit

Hadn’t purchased a Patagonia product since the Fitz Roy about a decade ago (still going strong), and had assumed their quality, like almost every brand, had slipped. However, the fit and finish of the down jacket feels old school in the best way. Finished edges and extra pockets throughout the interior. Sorted cuffs and smooth zippers on the exterior. Immediately donned it on arrival and did some outdoor work, not strenuous, at about 20 degrees F. Was comfortably warm in only a thin layer beneath. The actual fit is slimmer than I had expected, but still allows for some layering even though I’m on the larger size for a medium. If you care about looks, it’s way better than the boxier versions.Bottom line: This jacket is perfectly executed and more than ready for ... MoreHadn’t purchased a Patagonia product since the Fitz Roy about a decade ago (still going strong), and had assumed their quality, like almost every brand, had slipped. However, the fit and finish of the down jacket feels old school in the best way. my favorite Down jacket

This is a phenomenal jacket! it is very durable out lasting a majority of my gear the newer version has more down and bigger baffles. I find mine keeps me warm without a sweater down to about -5 and with a sweater -10. Going in and out of stores and running errands this is a great jacket and it also does great on long hikes and trips. It packs down really small so you can keep it in your pack while moving and when you stop just throw it on to stay warm. Honestly cant recommend enough it withstood 5 years of absolute abuse from me and I just got another!

I'm 5' 10" tall and 180 lbs. I'm a runner, but I'm carrying about 15 lbs more than my optimal trail-running physique. The medium is an ideal size for "no-excess-material" layering" under a shell or over a snug fleece. For me, the large would have been too big for under a Size Medium Salomon hard shell. YMMV. I do feel a VERY slight compression around my torso when I zip it. So if you're a late 40s, relatively athletic, dude of my size... there's the real dope. a Large would fit perfectly as a casual wear option, but I think a Large would bunch up under my shell. I want this combo to be trim, so this was the play. This piece is well-made and is a pleasure to wear. I love the warmth:weight balance... it's barely there, but warm.
