Really liking this jacket. Bought it last month before our 4x4 trip to the Mojave Trail, where the temps were dropping below freezing at night. It kept me warm and comfortable and stuffs into a stuff bag surprising well, just not a small stuff bag.We just had torrential rains here in CA earlier this week, and to my pleasant surprise, this jacket makes a very good raincoat. Maybe not waterproof, but very water-repellant. Water just beads on the outer shell, shakes right off when you remove the jacket.Build quality is good, zippers work great, love the double pockets, keeps your keys and phone securely in place while moving around. The one thing I think they missed on would be an interior pocket to keep the zip off hood when it's removed from the neckline, otherwise ... MoreReally liking this jacket. It took me three tries, but I finally got a color that works (the dark green is "as advertised"). The other two -- the gold and particularly, the brown -- are pretty far off what appears on the website. Sisu Brown arrived in dusty rose / terra cotta; not even close to the rust/brick/deep brown color depicted. The gold was just a little brighter than depicted, but enough that it didn't work for me. The jacket itself is super well-made, toasty warm, and true to size. Subtracting a star for the 2 trips I had to make to the post office, but as always, RIE CS reps are the best!

The jacket itself (fit, finish, quality of construction) are Patagonia's usual top-notch, but the colors are nothing like they appear online! I checked on multiple devices, and it has nothing to do with screen quality / accuracy. I tried both the gold and Sisu Brown, and neither are close to what appears on the site. Will try to post a pic of the latter to illustrate; basically, the Sisu (shown online as a deep, rich, rust brown) is actually pale terracotta / dusty rose in real life. Back to the drawing board; hope to have better luck with the green one!

This is one great winter coat! After trying an REI branded coat which was just not giving me a good fit, I returned that and went with this current coat. I had ordered both a Small and a Medium since I felt like I was somewhere in between there in size after trying out the first coat. I went with Medium here for a better fit around the hip area especially when sitting down. The Small felt like it would put too much pressure over time on the zipper and snap at the bottom of the coat for me. it I am currently 5'5" and about 150 pounds. I went from a 3 in 1 winter coat to this single layer winter coat since I had treated the previous coat in this manner and almost never removed the interior puffer on my old coat. This one does a fine job on these Winter nights with or without layering up. The wind does not come through the fabric at all, and the sleeves seem to be doing the job on insulating my arms versus my previous coat. I am quite pleased with my recent purchase of my first coat from REI! It is also nice to see how environmentally conscious that Patagonia is in their materials that they use.
This jacket is the business. I tried no fewer than 6 jackets from various competitors on quest to find a proper warm, casual jacket that was functional, stylish (eg, not too bulky), and well made. This thing dwarfed the competition. The fit is great. Not too puffy or bulky, but not too tight either. Just the right cut for this type of jacket. The length hits just below the waste, which I find perfect for his look. The quality is self-evident. After trying competing jackets, as soon as I put this one one, my immediate thought was, oh these Patagonia folks know what they are doing! And the fact that it is all recycled materials just tops it all off. Love the pockets, the hood size, the warmth, the cut, all of it. And not that it matters (but who doesnt appreciate a compliment), other folks seem to love it as well, as I have received numerous compliments on it thus far. Been great in 30 degree weather, but I have not had it in the rain yet so cannot comment as to the water resistance (though the material seems to me to be perfectly up to the job). Got it green, and very pleased with the purchase.
Warm 600 fill down insulation, comfortable, durable outer fabric, insulated hood, handwarmer pockets. Keeps me warm while driving my old/cold Jeep to and from the ski area and walking the dog here in the mountains of CO.Nice looking retro style/color, fit is true to size. It's replacing my decades old 800 fill puffer.Patagonia makes great stuff. I like that it's made using post-consumer materials and that no geese or ducks were harmed. Also, great price on sale!
Great jacket, warm, comfortable, easy to put on and off, enough space for layering without being too baggy. The styling is retro and looks great, simple and functional.Love the YKK Vislon two way zipper, and the high quality metal snap on buttons. The pockets are great, all four of them (the side pockets) can work as hand warmers or to hold stuff like wallets, phones, gloves and even a thermos bottle due to their open from the top design (the pockets with flaps hold things securely, those will not fall out even if the jacket was hung upside down). There is also a internal zipper pocket for added security.
I live in Santa Fe, NM, where the winters are moderate but with several days that are in the 20's or below in the mornings and evenings. I tried two other Patagonia winter jackets before settling on the Downdrift Jacket, and it is perfect. Plus, Patagonia's return policy and practice puts the customer first and is excellent. I love the detachable hood of the Downdrift since I only need it occasionally. And the drawstrings at the bottom of the jacket, which other models lacked, seal in heat when that's needed. Double pockets--one that seals shut, other open--are what I like. The phone pocket is essential. The jacket keeps me comfortably warm on cold days here, and it's more affordable than the light-weight down, quilted jackets that can cost twice as much. Unfortunately, I'm returning it because it's too tight in both the chest and particularly the neck. I'm 5'7" and weigh 165 lbs. I often fall between medium and large but typically try the medium first because large is usually too long in the body and arms, Patagonia needs to make "short" sizes as well as regular. It looks very well made w high quality materials and great tailoring. doesn't have the typical "puffer" look which I'm avoiding or slick feel to the shell. Becuase I like the jacket so much I'll try the large but expect it to be too long. Sorry!
This coat is boxy and feels a bit like walking around in sleeping bag on your upper body. The pros: it is warm, and stepping out into freezing temperatures in this is easy. Paired with a layer underneath it is warm down to 0. I like that it's just a bit long, so it keeps my butt warm too. The cons: it is not for any type of activity, as it gets so hot and then there is no good plan for any sweat. And, the jacket is at best lightly water resistant, so in a rain or snow mix or any kind of wetness this jacket is useless. The pockets are also cut open at the top, so everything in them gets completely soaked (ruined my phone and had to replace my phone after walking for twenty minutes in some rain). Because this coat doesn't stand up when it's wet I will be returning it.
