Amazing bag- make more bags with the bottom compartment!!

It makes organizing stuff super easy. The arbor line is super basic and doesn’t have a lot of fancy hooks or straps, it’s just simple. That’s what I love about it. It could use a sternum strap though. The top lid and the front of the pack have nice pockets that are deep and well placed. The material is sturdy and it has survived over 25 flights and 3 months of travel as my carry on/one bag travel pack. I travel super light and this bag has a lot more space than I thought it would. Maybe closer to 32 liters instead of 28. The way the top lid closes allows more space to stick a sweater or something between the top of the bag and the top lid. My Patagonia Blackhole 25L was my go to carry on, but this bag has replaced it because of its compartments. However, the 25L Blackhole does have much more comfortable shoulder straps. I want to buy this bag again in a different color!

If you use a bare water reservoir, I suggest it be no taller than 13.5 inches in height so you can safely close the bag. There is no dedicated hole for a tube. There are 2 gaps on the ends of the zipper closure as it doesn't zip 100% closed. I don't see any problems unless for some reason you have marbles in your bag.Padding : Minimal but the straps and back are comfortable and not bulky. Since there is no mesh panel, your back will sweat.Material : It is not a thin ultralight "floppy material". It will hold it's structure standing up against something. It is not packable like the Patagonia Lightweight Travel Tote Pack 22L.Outside pocket : Not much to say other than it can hold your keys, wallet, glasses. Note that the pocket is not lined and your (sun)glasses may get scratched. One thing the site does not show is a basic keychain loop (1/8 inch paracord) inside the pocket. Though there is no hook so you better have a mini carabiner on your keychain so you can actually attach it.As a tote : This is my 1 negative. There is only 1 standard backpack carrying handle. Under load with groceries, the weight distribution is not comfortable. I wish it had an internal handle on the opposite panel of the pack as my Chrome bag does.Overall, I really like this bag. Well made, minimal and functional. 1 star off due to the lack of a second handle to use as a tote. It wouldn't hurt if the paracord loop in the outside pocket had a hook as well for your keys. I would still recommend the bag however.

I do like the side zip which allows me to access the inside so I do not have to always unroll the top. I like that the top can be rolled down if there is less in the pack, or unrolled when you want to put more inside, like a jacket. I also wish there were more gear loops to put carabiners on the front or side of the pack (I only saw ones on the straps and the bottom.) Big backpack!
19 March 2022

I am recently looking for the just right every day backpack for my commute to work which involves walking or public transportation. I have nothing but good things to say about this bag but I will be returning for something that blends better with my work wardrobe. I am particular about how I use my bags and wanted an open-mouth, single interior compartment backpack with padded laptop pocket. I determined after testing a few zip top packs that I need a backpack on the large size, but also size-flexible to accommodate a variety of goods I may be taking with me on any given day day. Roll top bags seemed like the perfect adjustable solution. Roll top bags seemed like the perfect adjustable solution. I appreciate the artful color blocked minimalist style of this bag (kind of hard to find a backpack that works hard functionally but doesn't look super utilitarian- again, my plan was to use for work). Also appreciate other design features such as the bottle pockets on each side of the bag that are NOT a black mesh, as is typical of so many other backpacks. (another specifically personal style preference!) This is truly a BIG BAG and for a person who would need to carry laptop, charger cords, purse, tupperwares for lunch & breakfast, snacks, shoes, scarf/hat, I packed this up and had no concerns about fitting all of this and still being able to stuff a light jacket on top at the end of the day if the weather changed. So if you need a large bag for daily use or travel, this could be a good contender! I am very petite and though this didn't feel uncomfortable or strangely oversized or anything when I packed and and put it on, my partner did say it looked large on me.

Climbing gym bag, wish it had 2 extra pockets
7 March 2023

I got this to be my climbing gym bag, but I wish I went with the black hole tote for that purpose (because it has multiple different compartments with similar storage capacity). This one is durable, and fits a ton with the extra cinch top room. I clip my stinky shoes to the loop on the bottom. However, aside from the cavernous main compartment, there is only one extra zipper pocket. I wish is had just one water bottle sleeve on the side, and an extra pocket so I could separate where I put my keys and my phone (don't want the phone to get scratched up). I put my water bottle in the main compartment, but everything get mixed together and sometimes it's hard to easily grab what I need (chalk bag, harness, extra clothing layers, sandals, other shoes, belay device, etc), ... MoreI got this to be my climbing gym bag, but I wish I went with the black hole tote for that purpose (because it has multiple different compartments with similar storage capacity). Small gripes, but something to consider if you want to use this as your go to climbing gym bag.

Great minimalistic and versatile bag
29 June 2024

Love the balance between being minimal and versatile. It can essentially be used as a mini duffle bag due to its expandable top. Making it ideal for traveling, day adventures, and weekend camping. Appreciate that it has a zipper for easy side access, so you don’t have to use the roll top to access the main compartment. Large front pocket great for easy access for smaller items, and there is a small interior zipper pocket for small valuables, like a small wallet.

Lack of attention to detail on a bag designed for water resistance.
19 June 2021

If youre reading this review on a ROLL TOP backpack you probably have some interest in the backpacks water resistance. Its a relatively affordable backpack so I wasnt expecting to be blown away but I was hoping for at least a competent level of water resistance for bike commuting. They treat the material with DWR and the roll top functions great, but it all starts to breakdown when you look at the quick access zipper. The zipper allows you to access your laptop and the rest of the bag. This zipper is not water resistant at all. It is not coated, it is not a resistant material, and most importantly because of the design of the bag it doesnt even zip up all the way. It is not coated, it is not a resistant material, and most importantly because of the design of the bag it doesnt even zip up all the way. So now you have a roll top bag design for water resistance with a vertical zipper that doesnt even fully seal letting water directly into the bags compartment where your laptop is. They could easily fix this by either using an actual water resistant zipper, or adding a zipper garage (its honestly laughable they didnt do this as it would be a tiny piece of fabric). Its a bummer because this size range with decent water resistance and water bottle pockets is pretty difficult to find. Hopefully they fix the zipper in the future, but I cant gamble with the contents of my bag every commute. I always want to support Patagonia because of their environmental commitments but they make it so hard sometimes.

Pilfer resistant, fewer zippers to fail, efficiently rectangular
14 August 2022

Very useful underseat flight daypack. I prefer rectangular daypacks like this over the more common "tear drop" shaped ones; they are easier to pack for travel and generally more space efficient.Keep in mind that toploaders, like this, are intrinsically harder to access and harder to pack, but the main compartment is not dependent on a jam-proof, fail-proof zipper to function. Even is the drawstring breaks, you can still use the pack and even close the top.It is NOT more convenient to load; it is HARDER to load, which is just in the nature or top-loading daypacks. Panel-loaders with U-shaped compartment zippers are much easier to root around inside. However, it is REALLY hard to break a top-loader, since there isn't a main compartment zipper to jam or break. Panel-loaders with U-shaped compartment zippers are much easier to root around inside. However, it is REALLY hard to break a top-loader, since there isn't a main compartment zipper to jam or break. Even if the drawstring fails, you can still clamp the top closed with the buckle strap. And, unlike unzippering your daypack while you sleep, this top loader is harder to pilfer. The main compartment is of the "bring your own organization" type with only a laptop slot and no "office panel", but the external flat panel is where you will be keeping your phone and passport. The rain flap makes unzipping a little harder, but at the same time should slow down less-experienced thieves. I'm sure if you take a bus trip with this on your lap, you will face the zipper panel towards yourself to impair pilfering. The two "mini haul handles" help this to presnt as a "tote" at the ticket counter and gate - wear your 30L+ daypack and hand carry this Arbor. Passing it off as a tote is one way of avoiding a challenge for having two backpacks instead of a backpack and tote. The lack of sternum strap and waist strap add to the "tote" illusion, but if I have any gripe, it's that I wish it did have a sternum strap to keep the shoulder straps ideally positioned when used locally as my daypack.Configuration: tall, narrow, slim. The volume comes from it being tall and rectangular. Leg room, and the ability to stuff it under the seat in front, comes from it being narrow and thin for a 25L daypack. It is only 10.5" wide (empty). The rectangular, instead of conventional tear drop, shape, also helps support its presentation as a tote instead of a daypack when checking in and boarding.Overall, a nice niche bag and proof that Patagonia doesn't just churn out "me-too" teardrop daypacks with excessive numbers of zippers, compartments, and straps.

I am interested in the pack but it would be nice to have product images that showed more. What does the inside look like? What does the roll top closure look like? What does the small pocket look like? I would rather not order it just to get a clearer sense of it and then need to return it if it does not meet needs. A lot of wasteful shipping if that is the only way.(The one star is only for this product page. I have not been able to review the pack yet.)

The bag that keeps on giving…

I had my doubts about this bag and to be honest any bag that costs more than a food shop until I met this beauty! It might cost more than my food shop but does she carry my whole food shop home with ease? Yes!! Does it make it feel like I’m carrying a feather? Yes she does!! I love it so much I bought one for my husband!! The roll top is perfect, I did think it might be a fiddle but it’s really not! I use it as my every day bag and it doesn’t look too big!
