These are my go to summer shorts. The material is perfect for the hot desert days and the cut is dressy enough to wear for all occasions. I have multiple pairs! These are not
stand up shorts, they will wear out. The material that makes them so comfortable isn't durable. After about a year of hiking and biking I'll wear a hole through the crotch /
butt. Usually by this time there are other signs of wear - discoloration on the forge grey pair. I've repaired small tears and wear the worn out shorts proudly (just not to fancy
dinners.)They're my still my go to shorts, despite their propensity to die early.

I was curious about this hemp fabric since hemp seems like a more sustainable material than cotton. Theres a lot more to that story. Turns out this material is only 24% hemp
but better than nothing, which is, basically, what the alternatives turn out to be. I was expecting the fabric to be more like canvas but its Actually quite fine and very
comfortable. My first impression was it felt like I wasnt wearing anything which is a nice feeling if you can dig it. The styling is quite plain but I buy for comfort and value, so
plain is good. The simple design of these shorts probably contributes to the relatively modest price, also a plus. Im accustomed to paying about $35-$40 for my ... Show more

I love these shorts. They're extremely comfortable and light weight and looked nice when I first got them. However, after washing they quickly started to streak on the front of
the legs. The front legs have a orangish use on them, and the areas where the materials fold a little bit while sitting (up near the pockets) have this orange color in the folds,
making them always appear as though they are wrinkled.I'm not sure what would cause this. I've only had them a few months and only really wear them for home casual and
office use. It's really unfortunate because these were my favorite shorts and I still wear them out of comfort, but I don't were them out as much now because the... Show more

The simple design of these shorts probably contributes to the relatively modest price, also a plus. Im accustomed to paying about $35-$40 for my previous favorite shorts (Royal Robbins billy goat shorts) but they appear to have been discontinued (along with that price) and my last few pairs are almost rags. Tragic. Ive been wearing those since the 1980s. They used to be made of more durable canvas but over the years the material became less durable. About the same as a pair of Patagonia style57280 shorts I recently purchased. Similar in concept to the billy goat shorts but with a few frills I dont need. The All Wear hemp shorts are actually very similar to billy goat shorts; I notice the following advantages to the Royal Robbins design (apart from the different fabric): a slightly wider leg, snap closure instead of button, double stitched in places where the hemp garment is single stitched, a less verticle angle to the front pocket opening (similar to the 57280). Ask me in a year or two how the hemp material holds up; it seems so light I dont think it can last long. Which raises the question: why not a 100% hemp canvas? I recall inspecting a 100% hemp garment, or I assumed it was, and it seemed like a very durable fabric. What I would really like to find is a 100% hemp canvas short closer to the design of the Royal Robbins billygoat short. Actually, just tweaking the Patagonia design would be perfect.... Show more

My favorite (imperfect) shorts
28 November 2023
I absolutely love these shorts! I have owned four different pairs and will continue to buy them as needed. That said, other reviewers are correct when they say these shorts last about a year and then they're toast. I have have had the crotch wear out, various tears, wrinkles around the fly and belt, and have also had significant discoloration, but the fit and feel are perfect, so I keep buying them. I returned one for premature wear, but I figure after a year I should just buy a new pair. Im pretty hard on them.... Show more

My favorite shorts
2 July 2024
I love these shorts. They are a perfect fit, light weight for wearing every day and are durable enough to last for years.I bought my first pair of these years ago and loved them so much that I bought several in the same color just in case they stopped making them. I had my first pair finally rip from overwear but it took over five years of wearing them several times every week (I live in Hawaii so I truly wear them ever week) before they finally died.I highly recommend this style. Since they make so many colors it is now the only shorts I wear.... Show more

My only pair of shorts
2 June 2023
Let me rephrase this. It is the only style of short I own, though in many colors. The organic cotton or hemp, the great fit, and short cut of the leg suits me. I didn't love the new branding on the leg so much on the new hemp shorts at first, but I've come to like it. Not so much that I want to show brands so conspicuously, but I don't mind showing your brand conspicuously. I believe in voting with your dollar. Unfortunately our government isn't able to do much, so it feels it has come down to responsible company's to push positive agendas. So by showing this brand prominently I feel it indicates a very real aspect of who I am. I don't identify with any political party as I think they are both utterly corrupted by their monied overseers, but I do believe in this ... MoreLet me rephrase this. Believing in a billion dollar corporation. I also worked as a Sales Floor Associate with Patagonia (UWS) as well. Most people leave a place and say good riddance. Nope. A great experience as a seasonal employee with another full-time job elsewhere and I still feel great about the place.I won't shake a stick at a free pair, as I will probably never buy another brand or style of short ever again. That's just how I roll. Thanks Patagonia.... Show more

Nice look, not very durable
18 June 2024
Great fit, excellent look. I have purchased several pairs over the years. They are lightweight and very comfortable. Cotton/hemp blend keeps the shorts soft and holds up to wrinkles, allowing me to hang/fold and wear for multiple days. The cuffs and seat will show wear over time, and I've noticed a thinning/weakening of material in the seat and legs within 2 years' (six seasons') wear. This is a good short however lacks in overall durability and is a bit pricey considering its flaws.... Show more

Not a bad pair of shorts
18 July 2023
Let me start by saying I have been begging Patagonia to bring back the 5"inseam Stand Up Shorts for some time now. When once again, this summer, my prayers for the 5"inseam were not answered I decided to try something new. ( I tired the seven inch inseam last year and I just could not do it!) I ordered a pair of the Men's lightweight Hemp Shorts with the six inch inseam and I am happy to say I have been very pleased with these shorts. Now don't get me wrong, they are no substitute for the 5" inseam Stand Up Shorts but I will get a second pair. The weight of the material is very nice. it is light, airy and very comfortable next to the skin. Certainly not a problem I ever had with the 5"inseam Stand Up Shorts. The pockets are well positioned and big enough for a wallet and car keys. The six inch inseam is a bit longer than I would like, not at all like the 5" inseam Stand Up Shorts but it is certainly doable given the overall lightness of the shorts. I am also not twenty any more and a slightly longer inseam may be appreciated by family and friends. In all seriousness, I do like these shorts, a lot, and I will get a second pair. But if the 5"inseam Stand Up Short came back I would buy a bunch of them to ensure I could go to my grave in a pair.... Show more

Sustainability over Quality?
30 June 2024
Hello,I have been purchasing Patagonia products for around 35 years now , which includes numerous pairs of these shorts. Although the shorts fit great and are comfortable, they just don’t hold up longer than one year of normal wear! Every pair I have owned ends up wearing out along the bottom seam in the front of the shorts, with others ripping at the upper seam of the pocket.I have always viewed Patagonia as a product innovator. The ambassador program and customer reviews have always offered the company invaluable feedback from which to steer this innovation and to address quality concerns.I still have and wear standup shorts I purchased 25 years ago in college. Patagonia products in the past stood up to the test of time, and for this reason alone, drove sales and provided repeat customers.Today, it is quite apparent that Patagonia’#1 objective has shifted from using durable materials to using sustainable materials, and trying to solve every environmental/ social concern in the world by using hemp instead of cotton. These are all very “equitable” concerns, however when buying clothes and paying high end prices, my concern is focused on the overall quality of the product that your company manufactured and sold me!Sadly, I am finished throwing my money away on “sustainable” products that simply poke fun at your cherished, time- honored ironclad guarantee. I sincerely hope that someone in your front office wakes up, pays attention to reviews, and begins directing Patagonia back to its founding principals! Until then….Thank you... Show more

Very comfortable but not durable.
9 July 2023
I'm a little bummed writing this review, because I really love these shorts. They're super lightweight and breathable, and they dry really fast which is great in the summer in Chicago. They're pretty much my go to shorts, however they have a pretty major flaw. The seat wears very quickly and has a tendency to tear horizontally. Naturally, this has led to a couple embarrassing moments. I had one tear on the right side repaired, but less than a week after I received them back the left side ripped. These aren't my "active" shorts by any means either. I mostly sit on my office chair or my bike saddle, so it's clear the hemp fabric just wears very poorly. I'll probably end up going with cotton since it seems to be a bit more durable. Still two stars though since they're ... MoreI'm a little bummed writing this review, because I really love these shorts.
