Dirt Roamer Storm Pant - Almost Perfect.

I had been super excited to try out Patagonia's Dirt Roamer Storm Pants from the moment they hit my shop floor. I waited patiently for the rainy season to come by, and am so stoked with my purchase. They keep all the moisture and mud out, while still offering excellent breathability. The integrated belt works well and keeps the pants in place, whether winching up to the top or bombing back down. I want to applaud Patagonia for the higher cut of the waist band in the rear, which, when paired with the Dirt Roamer jacket, provides excellent coverage on your lower back, which is something other pants I've used in the past have struggled with. I used these pants with Fox's Launch Pro D3O Knee Pads, which aren't particularly slim, yet they fit very well under the DR Pants. I did tend to notice the pant bunching up over the top of the knee where the pad starts to extend out, however I imagine with a slimmer knee pad this would be less of an issue. The zippered bottoms of the legs are something I appreciated as well, making it possible to remove or put on my pads without taking the pants off was something I never expected to want, but have come to love. Patagonia also did an excellent job placing the pockets for these pants in places that hold your items secure and close to your body without being uncomfortable. I have one criticism of the pant, and that's its lack of flexibility, particularly compared to the Dirt Roamer jacket. The only other thing I can't speak to is the longevity of these pants. I've only used them for the last month or so. I have had issues in the past with H2NO items from Patagonia (typically the internal lining shedding). If anything like that occurs, I will post an updated review. Overall, Patagonia's Dirt Roamer Storm Pants are an excellent option for any mountain biker looking to add a pair of rain pants to their wardrobe. With fantastic protection from the elements, a highly thought out fit, conscious features that cater towards mountain biking, they should be at the top of anyone's list in terms of rain pants.

I'm usually a medium all around with other patagonia gear however these were uncomfortably tight. Particularly getting them above the hips was not easy and the crotch was very tight with no room to breath. I ended up going large. With the large it's much more comfortable but now i have excess material in the seat and in the legs that i don't need. Expect to wear them a little big. I also wish they had bigger pockets. My hope was that i could use a rugged pant for riding around the city all day for my work, but with most gear and rides; you might have to sacrifice the perfect idea to get where you are going.

Have You stopped Wetting Your Pants?

I am fortunate enough to be able to commute to work on my bike(s). Even better, I have options as to route... I can go straight there on the road and get there in ~15 minutes, or go over the hill on fire roads and get there in ~40 minutes. Same thing coming home... a number of options both dirt and street. When it rains I don't want to get to work soaked. There's no shower option, so I just have to towel off and get to it. I'd rather get there dry. I've tried a number of waterproof pants, and all of them have ultimately let me down, generally in the seat area and also at the shoe joint... anywhere where water collects or continually splashes. These Patagonias have yet to fail though. They fit great, breathe really well, and haven't leaked through yet. On the road ... MoreI am fortunate enough to be able to commute to work on my bike(s). Even better, I have options as to route... They fit great, breathe really well, and haven't leaked through yet. On the road the wheel splash doesn't affect me, and in the dirt I can go through puddles and mud and stay dry. I rode in the recent big rains and stayed dry. Yeah, they are a bit pricey but I'll just continue to not play golf and think of how those potential greens fees are instead buying me a dry commute. Great pants.

I purchased these pants to replace a pair of Patagonia waterproof biking pants I purchased in 2002 for adventure racing in bad weather. These pants feel great to the hand and while on BUT mediums are too tight and the large is too loose. The waste band is smooth and flat BUT it has absolutely zero elastic stretch. I could have purchased a medium that fits perfectly everywhere BUT in the waste. The waste was ever so slightly tight and would have been perfect if it had a small elastic patch in the band somewhere in the waste band. I was concerned that even though it fit ok standing and stretching at home it might be uncomfortable while climbing up the mountain on my bike. I wear as size 33 in the dirt roamer shorts. I am also surprise that the pant does not have the snaps to faster the pant to the inner dirt roamer short liner. The large allows me to tighten the waste band to achieve the perfect fit there BUT the rest of the pant is a little baggy and I am concerned that I might one day catch my crotch on the seat in technical terrain and rip it like I did with its predecessor. I went with the large and hope not to regret it. The pant construction and fabric are excellent. I have not yet tested the waterproof aspect of the pant but totally expect to this winter riding the soggy North Shore of Vancouver, BC. The lower leg construction seems tight enough to avoid snagging on the chain ring which was a problem in the old version. The old pant also wore our in the seat and crotch due to mud on the seat grinding into the fabric and wearing out the threads in the seams on long wet and muddy rides. I am hoping this new pant doesnt suffer the same fate but have also started using fenders to reduce the amount of mud that sprays up on the pant and the seat. I will happily post another review once I have a chance to truly test them during their intended use this winter in harsher conditions.

Lightweight, great cut, weather resistant... but too fragile.
6 December 2020

I got these to use as my winter pants for aggressive trail and "enduro-style" riding. I have been extremely pleased with the general fit, including the waistband design and adjustment system. The weatherproofing is also impressive; they have kept me dry in some brutal conditions, shedding mud and water easily (while remaining relatively breathable). The pocket design is nice, and I like that they double as vents. On the other hand, I am NOT psyched on the durability of these pants. I have ripped them in 3 places within the first few weeks of using them. Twice in the crotch after snagging them on my top-tube-mounted GPS, and once on the knee by way of a pokey stick -- neither incident was one in which I would expect a pair of hardcore MTB pants to fail. Fortunately, these are easy fixes, and I know come spring that Patagonia will fix them up to better than new for me. I would recommend these pants to my friends who ride closer to the XC end of the spectrum, but for my more gravity-oriented friends who will be rougher with their gear, I'll be recommending that they look for something a bit tougher.

Nice materials, weird fit
14 January 2023

The inseam is way too long, I have to cuff the bottoms and the above the knee is really baggy. I don't like the fit. The waterproof zippers on the ankles go up high and are nice for easy on and off with shoes on. The side pocket is fine, not huge but can hold small items.I think the torrent shell pants could have been better for me, they probably have a better fit, pockets and still zippers at the ankles and adjustable waist.

This is my second winter season commuting with these and they have been excellent until recently, when it developed a water leak out of the blue, and my right thigh would soak through immediately in the rain. This issue was present when the garment was clean with DWR intact. And saying that I am meticulous with caring for my technical gear would be an understatement. There has been no abrasion or damage to the affected area, and I confirmed no obvious signs of wear after a thorough inspection. Two store associates assured me these are not waterproof without fresh DWR, which in my mind means they should be advertised as water resistant, not waterproof. I am on my second pair now and so far so good! Hopefully that was an isolated incident as these pants are otherwise perfect. Except maybe they can be narrower towards the bottom since they are designed for cycling.

Wish I could say better...

While it may be that these pants hold up better in the woods, on the snowy and wet street of Chicago, I've found these to go the way of pretty much every pair of cycling pants backed by unnecessarily bold claims. Though the page describes "reinforced knees, crotch and seat", I couldn't, for the life of me, find any additional material that would accommodate the wear and tear common with cycling related activity. After my sixth use on surfaces that would go from slushy to rainy, the seat of my pants were completely soaked through. Interestingly enough, water wasn't coming through the taped seams, it was soaking through the laminate membrane indicating to me that this is a problem that's likely to manifest for many other than just myself. Though I'm disappointed, I can't say that I'm surprised. When used on the bike, every pair of pants fails in the seat; I just hoped for more from Patagonia. I love the fit and the range of articulation is outstanding. I've been dying for a pair of waterproof pants (or any Patagonia pants for that matter) that don't make me look like I peaked in the 90's and when I first wore these, I was over the moon! However, without more substantial attention to the specific usages of cyclists, I fear that these will be discontinued without further development to work out the kinks. Which is a shame. I feel that Patagonia has a real opportunity to make substantial in-roads in cycling apparel and challenge the lazy status quo set by the Pearl/Sugoi establishment. I mean, if they're willing to hemorrhage money through the Provisions line while losing ground to Mountain House and Whole Foods, why not invest in an industry dying for a more responsible torch bearer with a potentially new and exciting outlook. Oh well, say lah vee...

Sizing: Medium, I am 165# and 5'8 and wear 31 " waist, These fit perfect and will fit over all but the bulkiest of knee pads (fit over IXS Trigger no problem). Great water resistance and breath fairly well, but very fragile. The pants tore on the knee on my first ride. I didn't fall, they just got caught on a branch. When looking at the pants you might be lead to believe they have a reinforced knee and seat as they different fabric and/or color. However when you inspect the fabric, it appears as though not only are they not reinforced, but the fabric actually feels thinner in these locations. While it looks like a ripstop weave in the fabric the tear I had was a L shape with each limb about 2 inches, hardly the tear resistance of ripstop fabric I have previously ... MoreSizing: Medium, I am 165# and 5'8 and wear 31 " waist, These fit perfect and will fit over all but the bulkiest of knee pads (fit over IXS Trigger no problem).
