I owned the 2000 model of this vest, which I loved, and recently replaced for free with the Patagonia Ironclad Guarantee with its 2022 model due to zipper failure. Noticeable changes include its fit due to how it is sewn - I prefer the older model, which is more form fitting, the newer one has a higher neck, which is good because it provides more coverage, but when fully zipped its neck no longer sits flush and sticks out, so it looks odd. I really like and appreciate the addition internal pockets on the newer model, which has three in total compared to only one from the older model. This vest has maintained true down that is not synthetic, so it will keep you warmer. I did the research to find a vest whose down has been responsibly harvested, sufficiently rated for down content , lightweight and well made with the two inner pockets, and a zipper which so far has been worry free. I want to love this vest. I'm 5'-10" and 155 lbs with a thin to athletic build. I always wear a small in all of my Patagonia apparel. I bought this vest in a small and the waist is so tight. I thought I would be able to adjust the cord but I couldn't. I could make it work but it would ride up a little just walking around. The upper portion fit perfectly. I opted to go for a medium and the waist problem has been solved but it fits a bit large on me. The collar is huge. When fully zipped you get great coverage, but if it's not zipped all the way the collar flaps against my ears. I'm on the fence about keeping it or not. I love the color (nouveau green) but the fit is so odd compared to every other Patagonia jacket that I have. For reference, I have my Down Sweater ... MoreI want to love this vest. Color is more muted than apparent in the photos, which is fine with me. Zippers work as they should, plenty of pockets. The collar; it’s there and it’s not going away. It does stand up when open, but, when need the warmth for which you bought this 800 fill power down vest zipping all the way up and tucking the collar under the chin seals the neck perfectly, and because it down, it readily compresses and is unobtrusive. Love this vest.
I read too many reviews about this current version of the Patagonia Down Vest and they are all spot on. The current design's collar is HUGE and looks RIDICULOUS. It forced me to buy used (previous versions from 2020 to 2022) on Ebay (i've purchased four old versions because Patagonia may not revert back to the older design). "Patagonia designers, bring back the older design with the lower / three panel flexible collar". I'll buy one for each of my family members if Patagonia does this and be sure to help them sell more with positive reviews. But not on this version. Only time will tell if Patagonia is listening to their customers.

A few weeks later I saw the current version of this vest on sale at Patagonia in Wax Red and ordered a Medium. Unfortunately, when it arrived it was at least 2" short of closing. I have another down vest by another manufacturer in Medium that fits fine. I took the vest to a Patagonia store to exchange it but the clerk recognized it as a sale item and immediately started to ring up a refund. I asked if they had it in Large, but they didn't have any sale items in stock and my only option was to buy a black one, which was not on sale and would cost $100 more! I received a Patagonia down vest as a Christmas gift seven years ago. Luckily, I can say that I have not changed sizes very much in that time (#genetics).Unfortunately, I just ordered a new down vest from Patagonia in a different color because I love the quality of the first vest so much.All I can say is, the sizing is just plain wrong.- It is too tight when you zip it up.- The arms are too tight and the waist is too tight.Maybe sizing issue at factory?Go a size up (minimum).

The 3 panel design set the Patagonia vests apart from other similar vests, and made them more comfortable. With only two panels, it is less flexible than before, and therefore less comfortable.Equally important, the new vests are less filled than the previous generations. I spoke to someone in the store and he agreed that they look more wrinkled because they aren't as full as before. I don't want a puffy vest, just one that looked like it wasn't all-the-way filled, like these do. I hope Patagonia reverts these changes in the future, since these were key to my decision to purchase.
