The new mens XL Fitz Roy that I just bought is a full 6 1/2 ounces lighter than the one I bought 3-4 years ago. When I put it on it was immediately noticeable that it was not as heavy and wearing it outside, not nearly as warm. But it sure wasnt any less expensive. The new one also didnt come with a stuff sac and it only has one inside pocket and my old one has a stuff sac and two inside pockets. I guess I just feel like its equivalent to the 11.5 ounce soda instead of the 12 ounce soda that soda companies pulled on consumers some years back: a way to make more money by delivering a cheaper product but charging the same. Some other brands I tried make the sleeves narrow in the forearm to save weight. However, this makes layering difficult. To increase warmth, there are wide elastic bands at the cuffs preventing drafts, large baffles reducing the sew through seams by half, and an interior layer of material on the front creating a second dead air space. This hood presents a nice tailored look when a helmet is not needed. I also appreciate the extra length which, for me (5'10"), adds insulation to my entire torso. Despite the fact that red and blue are colors I prefer in my outdoor clothing, I ended up choosing the nouveau green. Online this color was not very attractive but when seen in person it has a nice silvery sheen that highlights the overall look. Definitely a quality piece of clothing that should easily last another 25 years if needed!

Great Jacket but Very Cold Sleeves
1 March 2024

I bought this jacket as a final layer to throw on while stopped on the trail and for long shifts working outside at a ski mountain. Most of the jacket is great, I love the pockets, especially the giant dump pocket inside. The hood cinch is very well designed and works well with a bare head, over a climbing helmet, and even a bulky ski helmet. The zippers are easy to operate with gloves on too, and the nouveau green fabric is great. The sleeves are a major design flaw however. There is a combination of too little down and too much baffle which causes all the down to press out from your underarms and the inside of your elbow and migrate to the outside of the arms, leaving only two ultralight pieces of fabric keeping your arm's major arteries warm after a few minutes ... MoreI bought this jacket as a final layer to throw on while stopped on the trail and for long shifts working outside at a ski mountain. This doesn't cause an issue until you have to raise your arms up, for example while belaying, where you feel the chill directly on your skin. I am hoping I can find a tailor who can possibly subdivide the arm baffles to help prevent the down migration and keep my arms a bit warmer.

Kinda Disapointing
13 November 2022

I waited to write this review for quite some time, until I had enough experience with the jacket. I think the design, features, and fit are well though out. The construction is great and it packs down well. It functions as a belay and expedition parka for here in Colorado. My biggest complaint is the amount of down fill in the arms. The insulation in the arms is not adequate for the weight of this jacket. I own other down parkas from other brands that fill the same niche (and cost less) that have significantly more down fill in the arms and ultimately keep my arms warmer. It should be noted that this problem does not extend to the torso. But this is a disappointing oversight on Patagonia's part.

Not as good as they used to be
4 January 2023

I purchased a XL Fitz Roy parka in late 2018 for snow camping, and was amazed and impressed by how great this jacket was! The problem was that I never got to use it as I would always give it to my wife to wear while in the back country. So this year I decided to buy her one for Christmas, and was very excited about it! The Fitz Roy parka did not cost any less than the one I bought before, but it was substantially less puffy and lighter and it did not come with a stuff sack. Curious, I put my 2018 Fitz Roy on a kitchen scale (in stuff sack) and then did the same with the new one. It was obvious as soon as I put it in the stuff sack that there was considerably less down filling! But the new one is way less of a jacket, 6.6 ounces of down is a LOT! I was so excited to get an additional Fitz Roy to use with my wife while in the back country, but am not forced to look for other options.

Perfect for those sunny yet chilly days

"Just got the Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Hoodie and it's perfect for those sunny yet chilly days. The fit is fantastic - snug but not tight, making it super comfortable for any activity. It’s surprisingly breathable, keeping me just the right amount of warm without overheating, even when the sun is deceiving. Lightweight and easy to pack, it’s become my go-to for outdoor adventures. Highly recommend for its blend of comfort, warmth, and versatility."

The down jacket I've been waiting for!

Im picky about my gear and Im a sucker for good designs. This jacket represents a high water mark for me in the puffy jackets Ive owned (several), and is one of my all-time favorite pieces of equipment.I really appreciate Patagonias attention to environmental and social issues in their manufacturing. I love that this jacket is an industry leader in down sourcing, sewing labor practices, and recycled fabricsand I love it even more that I can support those practices without settling for second-rate design and build quality. This styles balance between light weight and warmth is just right for me. This is one of the lightest styles I know of that will hold its own in temperatures consistently below freezing. In the places that I tend to play, if its above freezing then getting wet is more likely and I opt for synthetic insulation. The fabric choices, pocket configuration, hood / collar pattern, and adjustability are right on the mark. I personally could get by with fewer external pockets, but they do provide some extra convenience at minimal cost. The Internal pockets are great.I especially like the elasticized cuffs on this jacket! I am a shorter and broader build, so jackets that fit me in the shoulders tend to be long in the sleeves. With so many jackets using elasticized cuffs, I struggle to find styles that work well to keep sleeves above my wrists. These cuffs are a different design and the feel and function is a game-changer.Many so-called belay jackets like this include a two-way zipper. The other three climbing-focused puffy jackets in Patagonias catalog have this feature. Im not sure why they decided not to use a two-way zipper on this jacket, but I wish it had one. This is a minor gripe and in practice I sometimes forget to notice or care but Im not aware of any meaningful trade-off in using zippers like this, so Id prefer to have one.

Warm and cozy

Bought this jacket for hiking, casual wear, and to use as a belay jacket when the temps drop. Overall, I've been very happy with it. It's incredibly comfy when thrown on over just a t shirt and It's kept me warm. I'd say it runs a little large, but that's what I expected. I wanted something with room to layer underneath. The two chest zipper pockets sometimes seem like overkill, but I also appreciate the extra pockets for storing things. The jacket also has a gigantic inside pocket, which is perfect for gloves or some snacks. The only complaint I have with the jacket is the hood. It's meant to fit over a helmet, which is great, but when you're not wearing one the opening is fairly large, and can get drafty. Yuuuuuuge fan of this jacket

My first impression when I put this jacket on was that this is what my sleeping bag would feel like if I could wear it around. Super warm and cozy. Looks very nice too, sleek. Im kind of a weird build, kinda string beany with a little extra muscle and feel like sometimes things can fit a little awkward, e.g. too roomy some spots or really tight in the shoulders/back. Was not a problem with this guy. Again, very happy with my purchase.
