I love the fit of this jacket. 6ft 2in and 200-210lbs and it is a great outer layer or mid layer when it is super cold. The one thing that prevents me from giving it 5 stars is that it needs a helmet hood and a 2 way front zipper. If it had those things, it would be the best climbing jacket I could think of. I bought the DAS Light as well to try, but it doesn't have drop pockets, a bottom hem cinch (so makes the jacket almost useless then), and it just doesn't feel as comfy as the micropuff. The Micro Puff is a GREAT light insulated jacket. If you like really light and warm outerwear you definitely want to check it out.The shell material is very thin but reletively strong for what it is and you feel the warmth as soon as you put on the jacket which was one of the first things I noticed when I tried the jacket on. Patagonia made a very good choice with this type of insulation.Other than the shell being a bit delicate and having to worry if the shell fabric will hold up over time I noticed that the fabric that runs across the chest of the jacket pulls a bit across your chest when you go to put your hands in your pocket or if you raise your arms and try to push your elbows back. You get elastic at the hem and around the hood and wrist cuffs. This is a GREAT piece for people like me who run hot and don't like bulky down jackets. The Micro can be worn in temps down to the mid to upper 30's(depending on what you have on underneath). This is a perfect piece for those chilly to slightly milder days. If I had to add one thing it would be a exterior chest pocket. If you need something a bit warmer and with more weather protection then get the Das Light Parka which is the same jacket but with the addition of the chest pocket and a more weather resistant outer shell.

This style shines in cooler temperatures as an outer layer of resting insulation, and for layers like that I favor weatherproofness over breathability. I do find it breathable enough to wear during moderate activity if it's very cold outside. My only gripe is with the hood and collar:I have a strong bias for helmet-compatible hoods on my outerwear, so I can reuse layers across activities; this jacket doesnt have one, which to me makes it an inherently more specialized design. The hood and collar are cut almost scuba-style, similar to a microgrid fleece hoody like the R1. I find that pattern finicky even with stretchy fabric, but in this style I find it outright constrictive. When I wear this jacket I am looking for excuses to keep the collar unzipped. The hood can probably be forced over some helmets with the zipper down a ways, but usually when I want a hood up, I also want a collar up.I ultimately decided to trade this style for the DAS Light hoody, which is very similar in many ways but with a helmet-compatible hood, a touch heavier, and more weatherproof / less breathable. If I could change one thing about this style, I would give it a hood pattern like the DAS Light, or the previous generation of Micro Puff jacket.

Great Tool For The Kit
16 May 2023

These are my personal preferences, as everyone is different. I've used the jacket skiing and casual wear in temps ranging from -3 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit. I'll start with what I didn't like about the jacket. I prefer a zippered chest pocket, which I find useful when on the mountain or in town. The neck portion is snug and slightly uncomfortable when fully zipped and not using the hood. It is still a bit snug while using the hood too. If you're a person who runs super hot, this could still work for you, but be prepared to sweat and find what works for you. Layer lightly, for sure but also don't freeze. Now on to the goods! I highly recommend this one if you're looking for a great alternative to a down jacket. With a few minor adjustments in the neck fit, this is hands down still a bomber piece to have!

Great Update

This is my 4th Micro Puff Hoody and still my favorite jacket. I've owned 3 of the previous version and this review is for the current version. The construction is a huge improvement from the original version. Not a single strand of Pluma Fill was sticking out of the seams. The exterior has a satin like finish. Much better than the shinier version. Pluma Oil is nice and compact. Doesn't puff up like the previous "Michelin Man" version. It's as warm as ever and I really like the feel against bare skin when wearing a t-shirt. Props on adding the bottom drawstring. Allows me to trap heat in my core. Previous version was too loose in the lower part and heat escaped. Inner pockets are great for gloves or anything else you want to protect. Two big issues: (1) As others ... MoreThis is my 4th Micro Puff Hoody and still my favorite jacket. Allows me to trap heat in my core. Previous version was too loose in the lower part and heat escaped. Inner pockets are great for gloves or anything else you want to protect. Two big issues: (1) As others have stated the neck area is too tight. In my case (17" neck) I can barely zip up the jacket past my neck unless I pull up the zipper super hard to get it past my chin. Even then it's so tight it pushes my lower jaw back uncomfortably so this function is useless for me. This is a weird sizing problem that needs to be fixed in production. (2) The main zipper is still sticky. You need to be sure the zipper is straight before trying to either zip it up or down. Any kink in the zipper will meet resistance, not to mention frustration. This was also a major problem in the original version of this jacket which caused the zipper track to separate from the jacket which had me returning 2 of them for replacements. This is why I'm rating the jacket 4 stars although the overall fit is perfect for me.Overall it's a great product and still remains my favorite. Try the jacket on first to verify fit and that the neck closure works for you. Mine were all purchased online as they weren't available in the stores.

What is difference between nano puff and micro puff. I thought the latter would be significantly warmer. Warmth comes from thickness of trapped air and how well it is trapped. I cant tell the difference. I know the insulation is different, and I guess I need to test it out, but simple physics suggest difference should be small. On another note, I love Patagonia has all the waist sizes, rather than going by increments of 2. However, all your models are significantly above average height and wear medium. I get it, you go by weight, and they are slim, but when I order a large, the sleeves dont make it to my hand and the XL is bulky. I like the LL Bean large tall size. Stellar warmth. Wonderful movement.
30 October 2022

I purchased this jacket after owning a DAS light for the past couple years and though I was hesitant I really love this jacket. Light and packs small all well keeping me warm. Durability is sacrificed at the weight that arrives with that choice and that something you have to accept. With this in mind, Patagonia has done a stellar job at making it durable for what it is. I have already gotten a few holes in mine since the start of the season but as expected when climbing Yosemite granite. Only gripe is first few times it took some gentle muscle to pack it into the pocket, but since its been broken in, it stuffs like a charm.Cheers. And it layers incredibly nice under my DAS and DAS light if I need extra warmth.

Very Lightweight & Warm for the Weight

If you're looking for an ultra lightweight jacket for moderate temps or a mid-layer to use under a shell in colder/wet conditions, this is a great option, especially if you can find it on sale.I was hesitant at first about how warm this jacket would be given the synthetic weight fill and the thinness of the exterior denier material, but so far it's performed great, just understand it's intended use and limitations.I've worn it causally in temps ranging from 25 to 50 F to work and on neighborhood walks and easy day hikes with a base layer or sweater in colder temps and I've been perfectly warm. I've also worn it in temps as low as 11 F with a wool t-shirt and a mid-weight fleece hoody while shoveling snow and was plenty warm (layering is key after all). The jacket blocks wind fairly well and holds in heat with minimal loss if you get the fit right since there aren't any adjustable cords on the waist. For reference, I'm 6'2'', 185 lbs, size 31 waist, broad chest (40") and long arms (33") and the size medium fits great. I plan to use the jacket primarily for hiking and backpacking, mountain and fat biking (when not in motion in colder temps), and climbing (while belaying), in addition to occasional everyday wear. The only con as others have mentioned is that the material will likely tear easily if brushed up against or snagged on anything sharp or abrasive so this jacket would not be a good option if you're planning on bushwacking or will be rubbing up against gritty rock, etc., the price you pay for the ultra low weight (gear can often be light, durable, and costly or not; pick 2). I own an older version of the Patagonia Nano puff hoody and it's construction uses heavier denier which has been very durable in my experience, but is noticeably heavier and bulkier to pack if you're concerned about space and weight. This jacket is also just as warm if not slightly warmer than my Nano Puff.

Very impressive jacket
3 December 2022

I've owned this jacket since 2018 and in the past 4 years put it through the wringer. Lots of everyday wear, climbing, and hiking.Pound for pound it is the warmest thing I own and sheds wind amazingly well given how thin it is. I literally can't justify NOT throwing it in my pack for pretty much every climb we go on and its replaced many of my other layers. The hood zipping up over the chin also adds a surprising amount of warmth. Easily fits under helmets.I like it so much that I bought a second one in the same size and when its extra cold just layer the two.It picks up little needle sized holes where a small tuft of insulation will start to come out from abrasion on rocks. I use some of the gear tape Patagonia sells to patch it up and its as good as new.

Patagonia Micro Puff Hoody Synthetic jacket (XL, blue) - Windproof, insulating, and water-repellentThe Micro Puff Hoody from Patagonia is perfectly suited for adventures in cold conditions, provided it isn't bucketing down with rain! Although in this regard, the Micro Puff Hoody scores points with its synthetic PlumaFill insulation made from recycled polyester. This is because the synthetic insulation is impervious to moisture and is also quick-drying, meaning it can comfortably deal with a little precipitation. Because it is, first of all, insulated, and secondly windproof, with this jacket you are sure to keep nice and warm, even when the temperatures hit rock bottom and the cold wind is blowing: the PlumaFill synthetic fibres are almost as soft and warm as real down! And to ensure that no cold draughts make it inside, the front zip has a wind strip, and both cuffs and the hem have elastic trims to ensure optimal fit and windproofing. One of the two zipped front pockets is also used as a pack bag for the jacket, which again demonstrates its extremely small packed dimensions. Because it is, on the whole, so light and slim, the hood can also be comfortably worn underneath a climbing helmet for example, to keep your head nice and warm.
