Patagonia Men's SST Jacket - Smolder Blue / S
The Patagonia SST Jacket in Smolder Blue is designed specifically for salmon, steelhead and trout anglers across the globe who like to push the limits. It combines the best features of the previous STT model with brand-new features. The jacket is crafted from an extremely hard-wearing and breathable H2No Performance Standard 3-layer nylon double ripstop with a water-repellent coating for added weather protection. But this level of protection doesn’t come with unnecessary bulk, infact the jacket is rather lightweight. An adjustable hood and Streamlined reverse StretchCoat cuffs provide further protection from wind and rain. Y-Joint sleeves with anatomically curved elbows allow you to move with ease. Pockets are plentiful with the STT jacket. You will find two large gusseted chest pockets, two hand-warmer style front pockets and one large back pocket all of which are waterproof using YKK Vislon AquaGuard and YKK AquaGuard zips. To the back is a double belt loop which allows you to cinch your wading belt over the jacket and waders, creating a nearly waterproof seal for greater safety in the event of a spill. Other features include three Beastie D-rings (two on front, one on back), a large back pocket and hidden rod holder.

This was the first time I have used the SST rain jacket. It was marvelous in a severe downpour with huge drops. Water did not run down my arms due to the wide Velcro cuffs. Really liked the big pockets on the front for holding my fly fishing box and tools. The only negative is that it is very expensive.

This jacket is a slightly more lightweight than the SwiftCurrent waders and the current River Salt Jacket. It fits well in all the right areas and accepts a fleece layer and puffy jacket nicely at your normal size. Previous versions of this jacket didn’t include drains in the front pockets but this one does and it makes for an excellent full submersion jacket. I’m excited about all of the storage capacity and it reduces the chances I’ll have to pick and extra sling and God forbid a friggin vest! The beefy D ring on the back will work well for my net and the rubber wrists are going to keep my inner layers dry and my sleeve close to the arm and out of the way of the line. This jacket has all the regular tab connections and the hidden pockets!Nice work patgonerds!

I had the dark green version from 4-5 years ago so the design seems to have evolved slightly. Good cut... Length and width... I'm 5"9' and it accommodated layers for winter fishing. I usually wear a mircopuff as the main insulation layer for reference.Jacket is water proof and the jacket is light weight and relatively supple (not crunchy)I fish with a hip bag and two handed rods so don't need or like anything infront of me (fly boxes etc. So never used the pockets. Would have preferred something more time the river salt (flatter profile). Now the hood... I don't know a fisherman who doesn't where a hat (I.e. Ballcap) when they fish... The hood doesn't cover my hat brim so water just soaks into the brim, creeps into the headband/bucket, and my head always ended up wet (and cold)Tried the river salt jacket and the hood was exactly the same.As a result I have switched to mounteneering jackets with hoods designed to accomodate helmets. While there are other benefits (personal preferences no doubt) to the using a mounteneering jacket, it's a bit of a head scratcher to me how the hood has not been enlarged to cover a hat. Decent ones mostcertainly can be synched up to reduce volume if desired.Love Patagonia and have MANY Patagonia products I love... Sadly not these.

All comments tempered because I haven't tried it in heavy rain, but would be confident it lives up to Patagonia reputation. From fly fisher perspective this is a practical, lightweight shell type jacket. We don't like built in insulation as that is added through layering. This means jacket can be used in both hot and cold regions. A light, breathable shell is best option.Sizing is pretty good,a little larger than regular fit,but that allows for layering underneath. I could wear a down vest under jacket comfortably without it feeling bulky with jacket,or simply over a t-shirt. This means I can wear jacket in wide range of conditions from monsoonal downpour to night winter fishing in a snowfall.Pockets are good size allowing one to avoid fly vest if desired. There is certainly enough room for a day out on the water. Pockets within main pockets help keep sensitive items such as phones and modern car keys out of the rain, even maybe protecting against slips and accidental immersion or swims. I've yet to test this. The only improvement I could suggest is to be able to store the hood when not in use. There are many days when I don't need a hood, including light rain when a broad brim hat would suffice. Unfortunately my experience in these condition is that water can pool inside hood until the unpleasant splash down ones back when the hood is put over one's head. I prefer to keep hood off to allow me to listen for supple noises of rising fis especially chasing tailing fish on Tassie central highlands. Hoods over ears can block this sound.Heavy rain is forecast for my trip to NZ next week. I'll be able to update jackets wet weather credentials on return.
I used the wading jacket for the first time on a steelhead trip yesterday. I really enjoyed the large pockets and the sealable cuffs, they did a great job of keeping the water out. The hood is also a nice large size to accommodate a hoodie and a wool cap. The only complaint I have is the hand warmer pockets would be much nicer if they were lined with fleece or some other soft material. The weather was pretty cold and windy and it would have been nice to be able to stick my hands in a warm pocket.
This is a solid jacket made for wading. The hood is fitted correctly to fight the wind, the zippers work in cold weather, the gusset sleeves are effective in keeping water from the sleeves, the front pockets are accessible, handle lots of essentials (including backup gloves). The rear pocket is massive if you need to carry something extra, but remain light. As a shell It wont keep you particularly warm on its own, but it will keep your insulation dry and as a wading jacket most reliable in winter rainy conditions of the PNW.
I have fished many wading jackets through the years...50+ years in the water. I have had almost every brand known...the quality and materials is substandard to jacket 1/2 the price. Its pitched at being warm it is nothing more that a water proof shell...zero or little technology. For $400 you would expect so much more. Particularly out of Patagonia one of my favorite brands hands down. It is being returned...
What I don't understand about Patagonia is why do they change things that are perfect. I have been a customer since 1994. I own man of there items over the years. But the SST is a perfect example of change for the sake of change and not for a purpose. It has been the perfect t, absolutely perfect t fishing jacket over the years. so what does Patagonia do....change it. Make it an unattractive two tone color, change the features. Why? the river salt jacket was close to perfect so what did they do...make the 3-1 jacket, which was horrible. Now it is in came which is equally horrible. R1 pants, =perfect..so lets make them baggy so under rain pants they really don't work... Or worse yet they discontinue great items and come up with new "fashionable" items. this makes it ... MoreWhat I don't understand about Patagonia is why do they change things that are perfect. Why the changes every year. I don't thing high fashion companies make as many changes as Patagonia. I have been loyal but I am starting to look elsewhere for my technical gear.
Yooooo waassss up!!!!! This jacket is primo. I have always been a gortex groupie but I must say that this jacket is almost as good as any lightweight gortex I have. It is very light weight and very waterproof. I have only used it one season so not sure how it will hold up but because of Patagonias excellent customer service I am confident that if I encounter any problems i will be taken care of. Hope this helps. keep crushing it out there people!!!! Fish on And keep em wet
This is my 2nd. SST Jacket. My first one was 20+ years old and no longer repelled water and I retruned it to Patagonia for eval and waranty considerations, of which they gave me a credit towards the purchase of a new one. Love these flyfishing jackets.
