One of my best purchases from Patagonia. I like the colour an more important, the feel. It's soft, cuddly soft and warm. It feels great against the skin. Perfect for as a shirt for a cool fall evening or as inner layer for cold days, for sport or casual activities.

Im pretty sure this is the most comfortable long sleeve shirt I have. Its soft on the inside, slightly loose fit but not baggy, and super warm while still breathing well. The odor treatment seems to work as well, I wore it for several days straight around the house and working outside before there was a noticeable smell!

Perfect combination of cozy feeling yet light and breathable. Love the waffled texture vs. traditional slick nylon. Miracle fabric that keeps you warm and cool at the same time. My original set has years of use with no sign of wear, just got a new set.

I have worn Capilene in the past, which is actually Polartec’s super lightweight powergrid fleece. I have owned a variety of tops, bottoms, balaclavas and beanies. If you’re in a super super cold area, buy these. If you’re in a sorta cold area, I would say buy something else. I run hot, and these kept me plenty warm while sleeping in a not so warm sleeping bag. I woke up at times sweating. Forget about walking across town in the top: I sweat like a pig. The less warm Pat base layers were to baggy for me.These use to be called EW (Expedition Weight), and fit rather snug, which I was totally into. The Balaclava was just the right snugness. When Patagucci changed to TW (Thermal Weight), the top and bottom were a bit baggier and stretched out a bit quicker, and the ... MoreI have worn Capilene in the past, which is actually Polartec’s super lightweight powergrid fleece. When Patagucci changed to TW (Thermal Weight), the top and bottom were a bit baggier and stretched out a bit quicker, and the balaclava was tighter. The beanie got a patch rather than Patagonia stitched in black on black (for that color beanie) that was awesome. My personal opinion: Sitting still or sleeping in freezing cold weather: buy. Walking 5 miles in the rain wearing these items under rain gear: buy something else. In my experience, after being washed, they didn’t dry quickly at all. That was the EW version, maybe the TW version is different. I think it’s time for Patagonia to start testing newer versions of Polartec out for this item, especially for an item at this price point.
Generally I gravitate towards wool base layers for the odor control, however, the Capilene Thermal weight top has been a long-time favorite (this is my second) with excellent comfort and better and durability than wool. I could have fit a small, but the size XS provided me with more of a performance fit for ski/trail running use. I own this on both a 1/4 zip and crew and I use them on a weekly basis in colder weather.
I purchased five Patagonia Capilene crew long sleeve shirts between 2017 and 2018. The old designs were the perfect base layer. I could only imagine it was in an effort to maximize profits that they hired a new design team, or so it seems. I say this because these new Calipene base layers are of very poor quality. I suggest anyone reading my review go to a local outfitter and see these for yourself before purchasing them online. This is made of very thin material and much less sew pattern than the previous designs. If someone at Patagonia actually reads these reviews, please contact me and I will personally beg you to remanufacture your original product. I have yet to witness a clothing company go back to making the products that have given them the reputation that ... MoreI purchased five Patagonia Capilene crew long sleeve shirts between 2017 and 2018. I have yet to witness a clothing company go back to making the products that have given them the reputation that made them great. Usually once they start to reduce quality, they never return to their initial sense of concern for quality. Please Patagonia, don't become one of these companies! Bring back the Capilene base layer that you made in the past!
As soon as I put this on I noticed the amazing warmth. Good fit. The only problem is with the laundering/care. I followed the instructions (wash warm with like colors), but the color bled on everything. No one is going to have clothes that are exactly the same as this rather unusual color, so I included two black items, a blue item and a brown item in the load. The brown item is now a different color, in spite of the "color catcher" I used in the load. Fortunately it's old, and I don't care that much about it. The blue item wasn't changed that much, and I couldn't tell any difference with the two black items. The second time I washed it, I only included the matching bottoms in the load. I could tell from the "color catcher" I used in the load that the color again ... MoreAs soon as I put this on I noticed the amazing warmth. Good fit. The only problem is with the laundering/care. I'm 5'1 weighing at 136 lbs. medium build. What I like about Patagonia is that XS fits me with no alterations needed! I don't have to go and get this tailored which just time consuming and more money. I'm really sick of having to do this. Patagonia is just one of those rare companies that doesn't just develop for the average person, they know how to size across different builds/body types! At the time of this review, Missouri had just gone through its first day of 11 degree weather accompanied with a snow storm! I had just moved from California three months ago so getting adjusted to the weather can be a lot of "fun". Luckily, having this thermal weight crew top and bottom helped to keep me warm at work and when I'm adventuring/exploring Missouri wilderness. Has quickly become one of my fav base layers. I wear it constantly either casually or for hiking and other outdoor activities. Slim fit which is perfect, as Patagonia's "Regular" fit is a mix of either too short (sizing down) or boxy (if choosing true to size) for my climber-type build.Surprisingly warm for its weight and incredibly comfortable and cozy. I've worn this for an entire week (casually) before needing a wash.Only nit is that the sleeves are either a bit too short or a combination of length and fabric that clings, as the sleeves ride up a bit and don't readily come down on their own. I can use the thumb loops but that isn't overly comfortable, likely since the sleeves seem just a touch short. The Capilene midweight seems better in this regard.
Haven't worn these yet (I bought two - one blue and one black) but they are NOT what I expected. The old heavy weight Patagonia Capilene was a robust Polartec fleece fabric which I have worn for years as a base layer or worn alone as a shirt without additional cover. The new Patogonia Thermal Weight Capilene fabric is literally an underwear-only combination of alternating horizontal "stripes" of something similar to the old heavy weight Patagonia Polartec fleece, interwoven on a thin, almost see-through sheer polyester fabric. It remains to be seen how this new (space age design?) Patagonia Thermal Weight Capilene performs compared to the old fashioned heavy weight Patagonia Polartec fleece Capilene.
