So these seem great except for a few small quibbles. They are lightweight, quick drying, made from recycled bottles, certified Fair Trade labor and I really like the fit - not so baggy as most shorts, great for someone like me with a typical runner/climber build (no big cycling legs here). Sounds awesome right? The fabric is a little less comfortable and more abrasive than nylon, but not crazy. These should be the best shorts ever. So then I go out for a 10-mile run on a hot day and Holy Chafe-o-Rama Batman. By mile seven I am dying. What gives? The boxer shorts slide up ever so slightly creating a wrinkle on the thigh at mid-ball which REI will not let me name by its proper anatomical name (I would post photos, but I think that would be illegal). That might be okay, but right there is a SEAM that saws into your sensitive parts stride after stride. Couple that with the more abrasive than normal fabric and you have seam + wrinkle + 200-grit sandpaper right on those sensitive parts. Climbing into the shower after that first run was one of the more painful things I’ve done lately. I’ve tried them on a few times since and after a few steps that stiff wrinkle on the seam appears right where I don’t want it. Needless to say, for $85 once you add in the tax, these will be going back. I hate returning stuff since I know it doesn’t get sold at retail if at all, but they just need to fix this horrible design. What I actually wanted were shorts with no liner so I could wear something like Saxx underwear with but at least in my local store, every pair of lightweight, quick drying tuning shorts has those liners.

These are the best running shorts patagonia currently sells. They are comfortable and very durable, but heavier than a running short needs to be, as they are made of a light softshell material rather than a typical lightweight running short fabric. This does make them warmer which can be nice in cooler weather when it's not cold enough for tights. The boxer-brief liner is comfortable, not too tight, and doesn't ride up much - maybe it's the way I'm built but I have yet to find one that doesn't ride up at all, and so far this is the one that rides up the least. These are great for long mountain runs with a lot of hiking, and cooler weather runs when a little extra warmth is nice. They are a bit hot and heavy for warm temps, though.Quick note on Durability: I got bit on the butt by a large Doberman while wearing these, ended up with 4 oozing puncture wounds on my butt cheek which took about 2 weeks to heal, but the shorts were basically unscathed - no holes in the liner or outer shorts, just a tiny pull in the outer fabric that you'd never notice unless you look really closely.5 stars all around, will likely buy another pair or two.

I think you used to. make a 7" in your first version.Liner - I can't stand the compression shorts, but I do appreciate a liner. What's wrong with the old underwear liner? The compression shorts seem to sag and I keep pulling them up. They feel weird on my legs. The lighter mesh ones you are now using are better than thePockets - I do like the zip pockets you now put on the front and back. I need a pocket that'll fit my phone and is sturdy enough. What I'd like to see is a back pocket that has thicker material around it so that the phone does not flap and is big enough for a Galaxy or 14 Max... with a zipper to protect it. On the 5" model I have tried to get the phone in their and it's a struggle. On the 8" model if I put the phone in the front it flops around. The phone needs to go in the back, but you need more material to keep it from flopping. I did see another company that puts a pocket on the liner in the leg, but that's weird too. I don't want to feel it. The back is best. The pocket needs to be able to hold a phone. It needs to have a zipper to keep the contents contained. And it needs to be substantial to keep it stable.Material - lighter weight that dries quickly. The version I bought yesterday is the best, but I've seen you make them in several thicknesses. It just needs to be a little more substantial in the phone pocket.I hope this helps. I am happy to talk with a designer in more detail. I have thought a lot about this for a long time.I appreciate your taking this all into consideration to make a better trail running short. Thanks!Grant

I dig these shorts!
3 August 2022

I really love these shorts! I don't love the inseam length 8" is a little too long for me. Material feels durable and nearly indestructable. The inner lining however, not so much. I think some pricker bushes in Alaska tore up my inner lining real easy. Even with a bunch of little holes in the inner lining it is still super comfortable!Love the zippered pockets on the sides and back! All around reliable solid shorts for whatever activity! In my experience: running, hiking, biking, swimming, skiing, and more! The side pockets are great, but I think they could be slightly moved towards the sides and it would make them feel more spacious and bulge against quads less.

Love these shorts, kinda
30 March 2023

These are great shorts for running, going to the gym, hiking or just daily summer living. This is my 2nd of 3 Nine Trails shorts and all 3 fit a little differently. These are great for running and pretty good for hiking, well, let me clarify - I love them for hiking. They are light weight, the liner keeps my legs from chaffing, the pockets are deep enough, but not so massive that they bounce stuff off my legs when hiking, the zippers open and close well. My only complaint is that they are not very durable. But that is the trade off for a pair of light weight shorts. I have poked holes in 2 of my shorts on slot hikes in Escalante, but the holes do not seem to be getting bigger. I will keep buying them, so I absolutely recommend them.

My every day, do-it-all short

These are absolutely incredible, the best shorts I've ever had. These are multifunctional and incredibly durable. I used to go to the gym wearing Nike compression shorts and Nike running shorts over them, legacy clothing I've had for 8+ years. Then when I went hiking or backpacking, I'd wear a combination of my Nike compression shorts or Patagonia capilene shorts under my Patagonia Quandaries.Well, my Nikes finally fell apart, and my quandaries were worn to the ground, and I wanted something to simplify my options, eliminate the need for excess, and be multipurpose. So, I picked up my first pair of Nine trails over a year ago, and I wear them literally every day.Daily walks or running, gym, hiking, camping, yoga, backpacking. So, I picked up my first pair of Nine trails over a year ago, and I wear them literally every day.Daily walks or running, gym, hiking, camping, yoga, backpacking. They're easily one of my most worn clothing items. I originally wanted them to be my dedicated hiking/ camping shorts, but they're so incredibly comfortable and so functional I wanted to get more use out of them.Integrated capilene shorts with super efficient moisture wicking ability (no more need to buy separate compression shorts now), stretch material, and a variety of zipper pockets. These things have been through the ringer. Daily use, rough backcountry exploits (lots of scrapping on rock), and way too many washes. These shorts still look and feel brand new. Strech band is solid, drawstring is intact, no stitching fraying or coming undone. Just so well made. I recently got a second pair to rotate out, and between these two, I eliminated a need for hiking shorts, hiking compression shorts, gym shorts, and gym compression shorts. Literally halved my apparel. Stoked on that.11/10 recommend

Patagonia Nine Trails Shorts - Men's 8" In
31 May 2023

I recently purchased 27 of the Patagonia Nine Trails Shorts with an 8" inseam, and I must say that they have quickly become one of my favorite pairs of shorts for outdoor activities. Patagonia is known for their high-quality and durable products, and these shorts are no exception.First and foremost, the fit of these shorts is excellent. The 8" inseam falls just above the knee, providing a good balance between coverage and freedom of movement. The shorts are designed with a regular fit that is neither too tight nor too loose, allowing for easy mobility during activities like hiking, trail running, or climbing. One of the standout features of these shorts is the fabric. They are made from a lightweight and stretchy blend of materials that feels incredibly comfortable against the skin. The fabric also has excellent moisture-wicking properties, which is a huge plus during hot and sweaty outdoor adventures. I found that the shorts kept me cool and dry, even during intense physical activity.Another aspect that impressed me is the attention to detail in the design. The shorts have a gusseted crotch, which further enhances the freedom of movement and prevents any restriction or discomfort. The waistband is adjustable, allowing for a customized fit, and the zippered fly and belt loops add to the convenience and versatility of these shorts. In terms of storage, the Nine Trails Shorts have plenty of pockets to keep your essentials secure. There are two front pockets, a zippered rear pocket, and a zippered thigh pocket. The thigh pocket is particularly useful for storing items like a phone, keys, or energy gels, and the zippers ensure that nothing falls out even during rigorous activity.Durability is always a concern when it comes to outdoor gear, but I have no doubt that these shorts will stand the test of time. The fabric feels sturdy and resistant to abrasion, and the construction is solid throughout. Additionally, Patagonia is known for its commitment to sustainability, and these shorts are made with recycled materials, which is a big plus in my book.Overall, the Patagonia Nine Trails Shorts - Men's 8" Inseam are a top-notch choice for outdoor enthusiasts. They offer a comfortable fit, excellent moisture-wicking capabilities, and thoughtful design features. Whether you're hitting the trails, going for a run, or simply enjoying a day outdoors, these shorts will keep you comfortable and ready for any adventure. Highly recommended

I've been a huge fan of the Nine Trails shorts and no shorts have ever come close to these. They were perfect in every way the leg opening had a nice taper and zippers on every pocket was amazing. I never had bounce, the material was perfect. I had nothing negative to say about these.I bought these because I don't see the nine trails restock and I really really hope you aren't going to discontinue the nine trails.Anyways, lets start with the leg opening, I don't know what makes you go towards this sort of cut but it is terrible. It is boxy, way too loose, the leg opening is like dress also because you made it more loose there is much more bounce of the items in the pocket causing a more frustrating experience while running. It is boxy, way too loose, the leg opening is like dress also because you made it more loose there is much more bounce of the items in the pocket causing a more frustrating experience while running. That in it of itself kinda ruins the whole thing. You say its to create better range of motion regardless of body type and I don't buy that what so ever. I have large thighs way bigger than the average, and I never felt any sort of restriction. So I don't really understand this decision whatsoever it is oblivious. If anything you should've kept the same cut since you are using a more stretchable material, that should result in better range of motion! No need to ruin the cut of your products.Next the length, I own 4 nine trails and compared them all side by side and the length is a bit longer again again referring back to the horrible cut. Its unflattering and do not feel confident in these shorts. If the goal was to make them "lighter" these shorts should not been the ones. If you run trails you wont even noticed the difference what so ever, so why try to achieve a lighter profile. Keep that to the shorter inseam running shorts. A couple grams is not going to weigh anyone down. Now onto the snap button, just a horrible decision to switch from the zipper. I always felt confident with the nine trails zippers and now you have to worry about damaging the button if you decide to rest on a rock while on the trail. Now that's another frustration to consider, when it rubs and scrapes on everything. This button is going to wear out at this rate. Also a button has a higher failure rate than the zipper. I always carry my wallet in the back pocket I feel so secure knowing its zipped up. A button does not give you the same confidence of your pockets security.Overall if these are going to replace the nine trails then we just lost a great product. In conclusion, these shorts are a collection of horrible design decisions and genuinely believe these did not need to go intro production to replace an already perfect product.

Seems the material is different
15 March 2023

So I own 7 pair of these nine trail shorts. Love em, use them for gym and hiking. But the pair I just order stays wrinkled all the time unlike my others. The material seems thinner/ softer. I had to actually iron these shorts with starch to get the wrinkles out. I already own a pair of the gray. The same color I just ordered on sale. I like the gray so I figured Ill buy another of the same color to have. So comparing the two side by side you can tell the difference in the material and color. Unfortunate because I think these are the best active short Ive ever owned. I Hope Patagonia is not trying to save money by using cheaper materials because the price point is still the same for the consumer.

Versatile and comfortable shorts
17 November 2022

Great shorts for running, hiking, and chasing toddlers. These are my first liner shorts since high school track and are super comfortable. Not too short and not too long, perfect for a dad in thier 30s with soccer thighs. Pockets are a decent size, back could be a little bigger to fit a Galaxy Note but its OK in zipped side pockets. Odor control is pretty good and they dry out quickly. I bring these on trips and have them ready for quick runs when I get a free moment. Originally bought medium in the versatile grey for intl travel and added the bright blue on clearance. Can run in, swim in, and wear with a polo to lunch. Great shorts.
