Difficult to Assess - Arms are Too Long for most Body Types

This is the third shell that I have purchased from Patagonia and I have been wearing Patagonia since the 90s. The challenge of this review is that I was unable to field test the jacket because of the fit of the jacket. I cannot speak to the DWR or durability. The arms are simply too long. I am 5'8" and 160 lbs. and the medium arms went past my finger tips. The small would have been too tight on my chest... effectively not allowing me to use this jacket. This may be workable if the velcro cuffs were more robust in circumference and strength (surprisingly flimsy for an flagship shell and did not go around the cuff). I was not able to cinch down the cuffs to my wrist. If the arms are too long they get hung up on everything. But when cinched, it does work pretty well- rain slightly comes in through the sides of the hood when going against the rain- I wish there was a slightly more tapered fit- there’s no interior chest pocket, but not a deal breaker for me

Now others are reviewing this jacket saying it is great in the rain water snow etc. but from my perspective either the new ePE membrane does not work nearly as well as ePTFE, or there is a defection from the factory with the DWR with her specific jacket. Perfect For My Needs

Years ago I thought Pacific Trails made awesome jackets. Then I found out about layering and how the various layers work. I got hooked on TAD Gear and owned several jackets from them that I really loved. I had a Stealth Hoodie LT fully taped shell that was the bomb. It was a thicker than average shell with a cool Schoeller membrane, but after years of faithful service, that jacket has failed. Seams are delaminating as is the hood fabric, so time for a new shell. After a lot of research and visits to several retail stores, I settled on the Patagonia Triolet. Im super happy with this shell. The 70D shell is a bit tougher than a lot of shells offered these days, which is good for me as I live a full contact life. Its roomy enough that a light North Face fleece jacket mid layer leaves room for some sort of puffer I haven't needed. The Fleece jacket and Triolet worked well in So Cal Rain storms in the 50s last week. Swapping out the North Face fleece jacket for a heavier TAD Gear fleece hoodie under the shell was still comfortable and didn't Impact flexibility.I really like my Triolet. I wish I could have found one in Black, but mine looks pretty good in Blue.My only complaint is that the material is loud if you are in a quiet environment like a forest. Maybe that will improve as I wear the jacket more and break it in?

Size down!!!

I received this jacket as an exchange for my older Gore-Tex Pro Pluma shell that no longer offered proper protection from the elements. I was given a new Triolet, at Patagonia Portland, right on the spot. Awesome warranty on these products. However, upon trying this on, in size Medium, I realized this jacket is ABSOLUTELY HUGE compared to my old shell. For reference, I am 5ft 11, 160 pounds. I was told that I cannot have a size that actually fits properly by store staff (a Small in this case), even though its right there in front of me on the store rack, and I tried it on and it fits exactly like the one I returned. Thats rather silly when we are talking about a $500 jacket I returned. Really disappointed with the cut of this jacket. I guess I will just donate it, and wear my Mountain Hardwear shell this season, because it fits properly. I can literally fit a down sweater jacket AND a better sweater on underneath this shell and still have room.

Solid Shell

I bought this as my main ski shell to replace an older H2No shell. I don't like powder skirts or need some of the flashier features on dedicated "ski" shells, and this jacket fits the bill for simplicity. The fabric is bomber. The fit is nice and loose in the shoulders for mobility, but trimmer through the waist so it doesn't billow too badly under a pack or harness. The inside mesh pocket easily fits skins, even for the fattest powder skis.I especially appreciate the wide and high collar that doesn't feel constricting when you zip it all the way up over a bunch of layers. My one gripe is with the hood shape. It is cut too specifically for high domed climbing helmets, so the brim doesn't extend far enough forward to fit over a ski helmet. When you cinch the hood down to wear it without a helmet in the rain, the brim is so short that rain drips inside of the collar!Overall, a great jacket that gets a lot of use. The hood is the only thing holding it back from being a much more versatile shell for all kinds of activities in nasty weather.

The One
22 March 2024

I finally have the one jacket for all conditions and pursuits. Light weight and almost no frills, this jacket can do it all. Gore-Tex is a big plus for me. Just the right amount of pockets-hand warmers, chest x 2 and 1 internal drop style. Pit zips, hood, Recco etc...obviously this jacket has been designed to the highest level and has everything you need and nothing you don't. It has been a staple of the Alpine line up for a long time. If you want a heavy jacket with a liner, powder skirt, insulation, sleeve pass pocket or weird color ways then you should look elsewhere. Size L fit me fine (5'10" and 195). I am not making first ascents of some unamed peak in the Alaskan wilderness, but I am happy knowing someone is and probably wearing this jacket.

Triolet Jacket - Beautiful WorkHorse
20 February 2024

I recently purchased a Patagonia Triolet Jacket. This was the third item to build my layering system. I also purchased the R2 Tech fleece and Down Sweater. The fit for all three garments was ideal in terms of integrated fit and function. Specifically, the Triolet has a great form and fit for hiking, with it's strategically placed pockets, brimmed hood and light weight. I love the feel as the jacket does not impede movement and blocks wind and rain perfectly. I would recommend this jacket to anyone interested in a high quality product that does what it says it does and will last for many years.

Versatile and durable, but the blue has different accents than pictured

I think this is an amazingly versatile, stout, durable minimalist winter shell whose old-school tried-and-true tech can save you $200 off the latest from competitors. Three-layer Gore-tex tends to get dissed as not ideal for strenuous activity, but it was the standard just 10 years ago. And with its burly face fabric, it will last just as long as any of the updated shells. It gives me everything I want for all the snowsports I do, and nothing I don't want. Some dont like the boxy fit. At 5 10, 170 lbs, I actually found the cut and shape of the chest area of a medium perfect with insulation and manageable without. It's just rather long and lacking any taper. The image on all product sites includes Patagonia in black stitching. But the jacket I got - twice - has it in bright teal stitching. Theres a group out there like me who want a muted color, but not black, that will look good in more situations and longer. Seems small, but the bright teal really changes the look of the jacket. Went round and round with REI on this and it appears this is what you get, not the black stitching. Both companies should update their product images, or you'll get more calls and more customers just a bit let down like me.

Very Nice Jacket

I'm not a big guy but I have long arms. I bought an XL but didn't like the fit when I extended my arms, way too tight across the back. So I gave that jacket to my son and got myself an XXL. Much more comfortable. I am surprised by how light this jacket is. I wear it skiing but it may even make it into my backpacking gear. The protection it offers for the weight is exceptional. I've already worn it a couple days in California's version of a snow storm: 34 degrees with miserable moisture falling from the sky. I stayed completely dry. The hood might cover a climbing helmet but it doesn't cover my ski helmet, just in case that matters to you. I've never had a ski jacket that didn't have pockets deeper than the zippers. Seems like this would matter in climbing as well. I have already lost a pocket knife. Now I am careful not to unzip the pockets more than a few inches. Nevertheless, this is an outstanding jacket.
