I won't waste my time trying this one out. Too heavy. It's simply no longer necessary to buy a heavy bag. We have a good carry-on convertible backpack/bag of the same size with most of the same conveniences (and a few that this one doesn't have) that weighs half that and was 1/3 the price. We have a comparable bag that has a lifetime warranty and lifetime repair promise and better (I believe) materials and quality that was roughly the same price and weighs 3 pounds 2 ounces. Good grief. We have a nice soft-sided expandable wheeled Rick Steves bag that weighs only a pound more. Speaking of Rick Steves, they have a very nice one of roughly the same capacity that weighs only 2 pounds and is now on sale for $63.99 (Back Door Classic Bag).

Great bag for travel. Exact size required by airlines so no risk of them trying to take your bag at the gate! Get their cube for an insert for excellent gear protection. Only things I would change are: 1. I'm a big guy and I find the shoulder straps a little difficult to adjust. 2. The chest strap comes completely off. Great if you never want to use one but I would prefer one side permanently attached so I don't lose it. Minor issue in my opinion.I read a lot of reviews that this would not be comfortable for a multi day back pack trip. I agree, but I do not think that is the purpose of this bag. I have traveled internationally with this bag and it is perfect for getting through airports and day use. Not designed, in my opinion for a multi day backpacking trip with ... Many specialty packs available for that type of hiking. This bag has lots of great details, hidden pockets to secure your items and a neat strap system that stows away. This is a well designed travel bag.

Pros:Very high quality, durable materials. Very well stitched. Compared to Osprey, Cotopaxi and other brands, Peak Design is at a different (i.e. higher) level. Everything just works well: zippers glide smoothly, strap hooks connect with a satisfying snap, the harness hiding flaps work as designed, the expansion capacity is easily accessible, etc. The pack had an elegant, understated, professional vibe. The hideaway harness system is just brilliant. It meets carry on size limitations of most international airlines. If you are a photographer, you can get especially designed equipment cubes and accessories that custom fit the backpack.Cons:It is heavier than most backpacks. Peak Design has done it again with product innovation in this great pack. It's beautifully constructed and a lot of the features, such as the magnetic flap and the pivoting hip belt to stow both away, are fantastic. That being said, they have innovated some things that simply did not need innovating, and some features found on other travel packs are missing. My biggest complaint are the webbing adjusters on the hip belt and shoulder straps. They're made of metal and the friction is so high that you can't simply tug on the lose end to tighten the strap, or pull on the other side to loosen them. You have to flip the buckle up and feed the strap through in the direction you desire to loosen or tighten them. Plastic buckles found on most travel and backpacks would ... You have to flip the buckle up and feed the strap through in the direction you desire to loosen or tighten them. Plastic buckles found on most travel and backpacks would have been sufficient. The method for joining the hip belt--a metal hool on one side which hooks through a loop on the other strap--is awkward. Again, unnecessary innovation.I also would have appreciated a removable, padded shoulder strap. You can use one of the backpack shoulder straps, but when you open it fully--again, having difficulties doing this because of the issue noted above--only the narrow portion of the strap will rest over your shoulder which could be uncomfortable with a lot of weight in the pack. Also missing is a rain cover which has become pretty much standard on packs these days. It would have been easy to add a small pocket with one in it on the bottom of the pack. There are also some hidden pockets--one along the seams of the, back panel, one in each of the side waterbottle pockets--that seem pointless. Not really an issue, just kind of unnecessary which adds to the cost of the pack which could have been better spent on the rain cover mentioned above.Oh, and the sage colored pack is definitely sage. It looks to be a much lighter green--almost a light grey with a hint of green--in almost all of the photos I've seen of it.None of these are deal breakers. It's still a fantastic pack that I highly recommend, and that I'm looking forward to using in on my next trip. They do, however, keep this from being 5-stars.
Excellent travel backpack. Expanding design allows me to fit as much or as little as i need. Looks deceptively small in comparison to what can actually fit. Well thought out design, looks great, very solid build. Using for 2-3 day trips and just the right size. Much prefer a backpack to rolling luggage, can zip through the crowds when needed, don't have to worry about what's on the ground. Maybe a little heavier than I expected, but probably a function of the solid construction. Also have the Peak Designs Everyday Backpack and it has stood up well to two years of very regular/heavy use, expect this pack will be the same. Recommend looking into packing cubes to go with it.
I remember backing their first Kickstarter project and they delivered it.I almost bought this travel backpack when they launched it on that platform but decided to wait for more reviews. A few years later, I finally got it and I am glad I did.I have used a few times and you can clearly see how well it is made. For some, it might be over-designed but to me, this backpack is about versatility. I love the side pockets for water bottle or even tripod. Inside the backpack, you have many compartments to fit many needs. So far, the only things that I might have an issue are the zippers (durability as they are not YKK) and the straps as they aren't as padded as my other travel backpack. We will see how well it holds when I travel with it for my next trips. In the end, I ... I find PD's packs to be some of the best available, but still with a frustrating amount of room for improvement. I've used this pack for photo gear, and wish they really need to make the side access zips two-way, so that you can more naturally open them from the bottom-up, as I most often do on the Everyday packs. It would also really benefit from a larger/deeper front exterior pocket, and or another top exterior pocket to help keep smaller items easier to access. The snaps to make the bag smaller are a nice idea, but unfortunately they aren't strong enough to hold, and always come unsnapped very easily. While I like the all matte black look of the bag, I've never loved the fabric PD uses, as it seems to scuff easily and hold onto marks. It also seems pretty heavy, as this bag weighs 4 and a 1/2 lbs before you even put anything into it. Lastly, I've always felt like PD's stitch quality leaves a lot to be desired, especially when compared to other bag makers out of Bozeman. They use a nice tough thread, but long stitch-counts, and some uneven stitching make it feel less premium. On the good side, I really love that the main zip is toward the back panel, which allows you to lay the pack down on it's front to open, rather than having to put the straps on the ground/dirt/etc. to get into it. While the shoulder straps are fairly thin, they are well shaped and the padding is adequate. It's helpful that they fold away. I don't really care for the hip-belt as it's too flimsy to actually carry weight, and just adds weight to the pack itself. Get rid of the strap on the bottom of the pack, or at least the stitching on it, it just gets all shredded and torn up too easily.I wish PD would go back to that nice tan/camel color interior that they had on the original black Everyday packs. That actually looked and felt premium. The gray is just blah me-too and nothing special. So overall this has plenty going for it, but there are a lot of other options out there now.
Launched in 2018, even after 5 years, this is still the most feature rich travel backpack out there. It's a 35L (default config) that compresses down to a 30L and expands to 45L. Made of rugged high quality materials with a lot of attention on design details. The only con is the weight of the bag. All those features in the bag come at a cost - It's a 4.5lb bag, about a pound heavier than a Farpoint 40, the O.G. of travel backpacks. The backpack straps are relatively comfortable, it's not that well padded so it's not for overpacking and going on hikes with. Although it's possible to get some backpack strap pads to make it more comfortable. It works great for it's intended purpose, travel!
I was in search for a bag to cary a bunch of tech and other stuff with me everywhere. I bought and returned 6 other highly rated travel backpacks, including the Bellboy transit backpack 38l, the Gregory boarder carry on 40 l, Osprey nebula 32, etc. This bag is not the most comfortable of them all, but it is the biggest, and it feels like much more then 5 L bigger. It holds its form better than any of the others as well, and it has more functional organization as well. It holds so much stuff! The way the hip belt pivots up and away is amazing and super convenient, and this bag is by a long shot the most durable well built backpack I have ever seen. The way the hip belt pivots up and away is amazing and super convenient, and this bag is by a long shot the most durable well built backpack I have ever seen. It is a really great bag when compared to everything else I tried, but it also has a few annoying flaws. First, it is pretty comfortable, even loaded with like 25 lbs of stuff, but you need to use the hip belt. The foam on the shoulder straps and back is pretty hard. I wish there was a key hook somewhere in the bag, and the tablet sleeve is like 1 cm to small to fit a 12.9 inch iPad with a case. There is also a pocket on the front of the bag that opens down that the straps you can use to hook stuff to the outside of the bag hang in, accept its a full length pocket, just upside down. I wish it opened from the top instead so you could use at as a quick grab kind of pocket. The chest strap can kind of pull the shoulder straps in weirdly making them less comfortable, but I found with enough adjustment you can mostly get around that.Overall, this is a fantastic backpack. I will be happy with it for a long time, possibly ever given its lifetime warranty. I completely understand why it’s one of the highest rated bags on PackHacker. It is for sure not perfect, but it is fantastic compared to everything else I tried. I got it around 25% off and at that price it is fantastic. Maybe a slightly harder sell at full price, but at the same time I don’t know any other bag I could recommend over it. I really liked the osprey nebula 32, it was just way to small for my needs.
I am amazed by all the positive reviews for this product, because there is almost nothing that I like about it.There are FAR more pockets (and therefore zippers) than anyone will ever use, adding way too much extra bulk and weight. So, the *useful* storage volume is way lower than it could be at any of the three (30L, 35L, 45L) size configurations, and the pack is noticeably heavy even when empty. The snaps that reduce the volume from 35L to 30L are absurdly difficult to engage, so you may run into trouble when trying to use this as a carry-on bag.And yet, the waist and sternum straps are minimalist almost to the point of uselessness. The waist strap should have a standard snap clip instead of the slow-to-use, very insecure slide clip that PD has chosen. If I ... The waist strap should have a standard snap clip instead of the slow-to-use, very insecure slide clip that PD has chosen. If I were going to keep using htis bag (which I'm not), that would be the first thing that I would change. The sternum strap is uncomfortable (for me, anyway) at any of its several mounting locations, mostly because of the large, hard, metal clips used to attach it to the shoulder straps (this is perhaps the craziest design element of the entire pack, since there are obvious, much better alternatives).Almost all of the many, *many* straps on this bag are difficult to adjust. They also take a lot of practice to engage without looking in a mirror while you're doing it.The recycled plastic fabric used for the bag is very unpleasantly stiff. It feels like having a rigid box strapped to your back. This alone would be enough reason to avoid the product. The magnet closures for the pocket that can hide the shoulder & waist straps do not hold well, in part because that pocket is somewhat too small for all of the straps, no matter how carefully you arrange them.Without an awful lot of practice and training as a contortionist, you aren't going to be rotating this to the front of your body to get quick access to your gear as shown in the Peak Design videos.I said above that there's almost nothing that I like about this product. The one exception is the quite nice Sage color.Overall, this pack is very finicky and difficult to use, not a good thing when you're trying to get it together in a hurry or in bad weather conditions. This product is the epitome of style over substance, and has replaced the wretched Cotton Carrier CCS G3 as my most-regretted photo gear purchase of the past year--I'm going to be looking for a competitor to gift it to. If you look at PD's Facebook page, you will see that there are lots of people volunteering to give the company design advice. There's a reason for that. It's too bad, because some of the company's other products (particularly the Travel Tripod) are really great and I would highly recommend them.
