When Disney made the book into a film, it set the standard for what Steampunk is today. However, since Disney still holds the licensing on the products, the only kits available have been inspired by the film based on the famous novel. Pegasus Hobbies has done an excellent job in the realm of model submarine kits and making model makers feel like Captain Nemo at the helm of his mighty undersea craft. The 83 parts come in individual bags for protection, as does the set of finely photo etched brass that includes grips, railings, steps and supporting cables. Pegasus farmed out the design of the hull to Trumpeter Models from China. They are known for capturing exquisite surface details and they did a great job of capturing the rivet detail throughout the hull of the 1/144 scale craft. The interior salon is captured in fine detail including bookshelves, classic organ, rugs and the semi-circular couch which can all be seen through the exterior gallery window. The Nautilus rests on an expertly sculpted base which incorporates a giant squid surrounding the hull.
