I'm a DSLR filmmaker and over the years I've acquired so much expensive equipment that it is a necessity to get some sort of protection for my gear. Before I got this Pelican case, I was using backpacks and soft carrying travel bags with the components mainly wrapped in bubble wrap. I started getting sick and tired of lending out my gear to other people to use and have them give it back to me scratched up or even broken at times. So I started looking for a hard case, preferably with foam inserts, and under $200. I've used Pelican cases before on more professional sets so I decided to check out the prices on some of them and this one blew my mind at how large it was and within my price range. I bought it without hesitation, which now that I look back, I should have reviewed other models first but honestly speaking, there is nothing quite like this case. It's watertight, chemical resistant, and corrosion proof WITH a lifetime guarantee. You just can't beat that. What about the foam inserts? Well I followed up on its instructions to use a toothpick method to pluck out the shapes within. Best to lay out what you want first before making those plucks, but nothing is really permanent as you can always go back and put foam back it with rubber cement if you must. However I did find that although the time to create the shapes was time consuming, it was not too difficult. Just make sure you leave at least two columns of foam in-between cuts so to not make the wall too weak. There's even a second foam layer below the first one you pluck incase the item you're storing needs that added depth protection, which I needed for a few things. Overall, excellent design. It is a little bulky but that comes with the territory of solid construction and protection...bulky but not too heavy either. I've tossed this case in the lake and it definitely floats with no trace of water inside afterward. (I didn't do it on purpose, I promise) Pelican is going to get future investments from me as I purchase more equipment that need protection.

The TrekPak divider system for Pelican Cases is a game changer. I have used padded dividers or pick and pluck foam inserts in other cases, but these rigid foam and plastic dividers provide a solid structure to organize and protect your gear without wasting storage space inside the case. The provided tool for cutting the dividers down to size works perfectly, and you can order additional dividers and/or pins from TrekPak.com. As you can see in the attached photo, I'm using this in a Pelican 1600 case to store two monolights, 3 speedlites, along with the rest of my lighting kit. I ended up putting pins on both the top and bottom joints of each divider panel (probably overkill!) and opted not to install the red tabs for a cleaner look.

Excellent. Met 100% expectations. Key to meeting expectations are the following: (1) know what you want this case to do, (2) have desired contents pre measured (length, width, and height) before ordering, (2) review TSA regulations that pertain to carry on size restrictions, (3) review carry on size and weight restrictions before planning to travel by bush plane, (4) carefully review and understand what is desired for internal packing (foam, padded, or TrekPark Divider System). I ordered TrekPark and was extremely pleased at how will it could be customized to fit a wide range of camera gear securely and in the order that I would want to remove for shooting. Highly recommend the lid organizer for proper organization, storage, and retrieval of electronic accessories. ... MoreExcellent. Met 100% expectations. My company purchased a number of these and I am writing an automated test program. If you are thinking SCPI... Forget it. You are reading a 10 digit binary off the face-plate. Must convert from 7 segment and scale status bits to get a real number to record. Yes, that was the easy part. DONE.Frequency Measurement locks up the RS232 interface when selected. So I left that out of the tool set.Another quirk is that the MIN/MAX values of AC voltage is swapped when reviewed.... Something to watch out for when programming this in.Just about done with the program. I actually like these since they are cheap, light, and bulky enough that no one will steal/borrow them. Just plop one down on a test set and forget about it.
As soon as I received the Pelican cases and filled them with gear I knew I made the right decision. The hardest part was choosing the sizes. The 1600 line are great. No extra weight from wheels and a handle, but still small enough to carry around by the handle. These will primarily be mounted on my roof rack of my SUV or in the trunk. Pelican makes a great product and at an affordable price. Plus a lifetime warranty from an established company. The do weigh a little more than I would like, but the reassurance that they will hold up to just about anything I throw at them is worth it. Also the plastic won't scratch my rack or any other metal objects it comes into contact with. Won't dent like my aluminum case either. The Pelican has been found...on my neighbors porch. It happens. What a fabulous case. The color isn't garish like I thought it could be. It's a nice sublime color. The foam is easy to work with as they have little perforations one may work with when 'tearing out' the foam. This is my second Pelican case and I love these. I could have a bunch of them around my house just to sit on I love them so much. I got this to house my video equipment and it's absolutely perfect. I would suggest laying out what you wish to place in your case and measuring everything before ordering. Seems obvious but sometimes when we do things in our head things can get lost in translation. Anyhow, terrific case and about the most sturdy thing you'll own. Without being heavy.
Form fitted a CT flugelhorn (oversized bell) and Bach commercial Bb trumpet. Labor intensive project. Foam easy to pull and form for each horn. Sealed foam with DipIt rubberized spray paint to firm up the formed fitted foam sections; wrapped those with self adhesive velvet and wrapped again with velour to protect finish of instruments. Glued foam sections to case. Lots of time involved and project turned out ok but not commercially acceptable. Nice case to work with however.
After owning this case for nearly three years, I have to say the quality of the foam is phenomenal. It has never broken down to many pieces of foam dust, though I've seen a few specs here and there from rough handling. At last, I decided to upgrade to the dividers interior with all the changing gear I'm getting. The foam doesn't let me change with easy and with the dividers, I can store so much more equipment. Nothing against the foam though. It is the BEST protection. If you have something in there you know will most likely never change (i.e. glass, lenses), get the foam. But I store lots of other camera gear and accessories I'm changing every few years if not every year so the dividers made more sense to me. All in all, the foam is excellent. i purchased this because i wanted to be able to check my computer and video (gopro) equipment and not worry about it getting damaged. I have 6 gopros in addition to, i dont want to think about how many, mounts, mini tripods, adhesive mounts, etc... for those cameras. They take up the space of one pull and pluck layer of foam. They (the gopro gear) are the layer on top of the permanent bottom foam layer. I then cut the other pull and pluck layer in half (depth wise) and created a space to carry two laptops or one laptop and one video projector. This lightens my carry on load by A TON and i dont have to worry about any of my stuff getting hurt. This is a large case, it is suitcase sized. (what i would descrice as an old style suitcase). BUT it clips onto the carry thing on my garment bag and my large carry on bag (TUMI). So it is very easy to carry around for me. If i was going to carry just it i would buy one of similar footprint but with wheels. When checking this as baggage i have found i like ziptieing the locking areas (where you would normally put a lock) so that even if all the latches come open the case cannot open; i have had up to two latches be open after a flight. TSA, THUS FAR, has been kind enough to re-ziptie the lock areas after their inspections. A normal TSA lock wont work because they tend to be far too small, BUT pelican makes one that works, i just ordered those so i havnt tried them out yet. another great thing is that i can bring this case on boats and not worry about my gear. I store all my electronics in pelican cases because you can stack em, drop em, leave em on the deck (direct sunshine not withstanding) and not worry about em. a note on weight, obviously these cases weigh a good amount, but with two laptops, a projector and my gopros it is under 40lbs, so i have had no issues with the airlines as of yet. I would suggest this product to any and all looking for a large, relatively shallow, case to protect their gear.
Pelican should add a long divider (at no additional cost) to the set of two short and two long dividers currently provided Four dividers don't go very far if the layout is somewhat complex. Once the dividers are cut for a specific item distribution, it is difficult to change the layout to accommodate new equipment. An extra long divider would provide some of that needed flexibility when it's necessary. The OEM dividers are expensive but youtube has several videos on DIY dividers (I made a few) that are inexpensive and function just like the originals. The case itself is a high quality product and satisfies all the claims Pelican makes for it.
