This exquisite fountain pen by Pelikan is from their Souver n collection. This collection has a long, distinguished history with this model, the M400, in Black-Green being launched in 1950. The pen is crafted in Pelikan's traditional method, using many processes to create the striped material and to bend it and shape it. The contours are diamond-cut and then polished to a high gloss. The original Black-Green colour became the signature of the Pelikan brand, and it is beautifully highlighted by the shining 24-karat gold-plated trims. The 14-karat gold nib, refined with rhodium decoration, comes in fine, medium and broad nib sizes. This pen is the M400 the second-smallest fountain pen in this collection at 12.5cm with the cap closed. A Souver n pen is a timeless classic.

I knew what I was getting into though. It’s a small Pelikan But I didn’t want to fork out for an out of production tortoise shell larger pen on the second hand market. I only have one other Pelikan, a larger ocean swirl. The nib on this pen feels the same as the ocean swirl. Nice and smooth but close to the edge of baby’s bottom when you look at it under magnification. I didn’t feel the need to work on the nib though. It does stall out here and there but if you have a light touch and the nib is on center, it’s great. Pelikan does make some consistently fine pens, or at least I don’t have to fix them out of the box. Looking at you Omas!

Super smooth ink flow. Cute size. Would try an M600 next time in an extra fine nib since Pelikan nibs write broader than the typical Japanese nibs.

I like Pelikan FPs, I also got the brown tortoise in a fine nib. This White tortoise color is amazing! I got it in a EF nib. The Pelikan nibs are juicy enough for me, they glide smoothly on rhodia paper, and on copy paper, The bi tone and a well adorned nib are one of the most beautiful nibs I have tried. The M400 size is the smallest of all. So if you got big hands, you better buy the m600 version.Construction: the white plastic parts are OK, the cap feels thin and a little cheap for being a Pelikan. The gold color rings are very shiny and give the pen a very classy feel and look. The celulose acetate barrel is AMAZING. The yellow-green transparent stripes and the shiny yellow brown stripes look very nice, better than the brown tortoise. The piston filling mechanism is quite soft, but feels sturdy in its construction. So, as soon as I got it, I decided I was going to ink it up with Platinum Citrus black, which I thought was the best matching ink I got. But I decide to play it safe on the first inking. So I use the same ink that is shown in the pictures. The Rohrer & Klinger alt goldgrün, lovely ink by the way.To my surprise, a few hours later I began noticing that 3 stripes have changed color. They look a little darker. So I look closely with a magnifying loupe and notice that those stripes were stained with the ink. So I empty the pen, try to clean it thoroughly, but the stains remain. That was something I didn´t expect. I haven´t noticed that on the brown tortoise.I don´t know if other buyers have experience the same problem or its just mine. I got other Pelikan FPs and they are very well constructed.Besides that, the pen is pretty nice. So I can recommend this pen to other FP users without a OCD problem.

Loving my new Pelikan M400 Souveran!
1 May 2021

I purchased my Pelikan M400 Souveran from Pen Boutique. Although I am always a little skeptical of purchasing a pen without trying it first, I must say that both the pen and customer service were excellent! I am an avid lover of fountain pens, and this Pelikan is so much fun to use! Despite having large hands, this pen fits me very well, and writes like a dream! I typically prefer medium nibs, but my research suggested going with a fine nib, which I did. The nib is wet, buttery smooth, and creates lines that you would expect from a Japanese-manufactured medium nib. Highly recommend this pen, as well as Pen Boutique!

Pelikan M400 F-nib Excellent Pen
19 March 2021

Pelikan M400 F-nib Excellent Pen Black and Green. Writing with this pen is smooth and consistent. There is no interruption in the line and changes in the thickness of the line. Depend on the ink, the pen can be more or less watery, but it is the ink not the pen. I also own Pelikan M600 F-nib, which has slightly stiffer nib than M400, but M600 is bigger pen, not for every day prolonged writing. M 400 is ideal size, balanced and light weight pen. I love both pens, Pelikan M400 and M600.

Wonderful pen at a great price, and quickly dispatched too. The team were wonderful, swapping out a a small item I'd mis-ordered for the one I wanted.

Smooth Moves
8 May 2023

The lightness of this fine writing instrument makes writing effortless. With arthritis in my hands, this helps me continue to journal with pen and ink. Choosing smooth paper adds additional ease to the writing experience. This is my first high end nib which makes all the difference in the ease and flow of script. I only regret that I didn't invest in this many many years ago, but hopefully, whoever becomes the lucky next owner will treasure it as much as I do.

Sovereign Souveraen. Worth the search to find
8 July 2021

This is a glorious fountain pen. The nib is smooth as silk. The body of the pen beautifully finished and lovely to look at, and the piston fill is smooth without the annoying hard spots where pistons sometimes stutter.I will say that the pen is quite sensitive to the ink you use. I’m surprised that Pelikan Moonstone felt really dry in the pen and that it seemed to stutter a bit even on good paper. That’s cured with Sailor, Lamy, and Iroshizuku inks.
