Personally it does not bother me all that much, but if you are someone who does care about that then be prepared for that.Overall I would highly recommend this product. It's become one of my favorite fishing reels, Penn really hit it out of the park with their battle series.

Bought two of these since will resist salt more than a cheap reel, unfortunately Cabellas wont take back after 60 days since makes a terrible Christmas present. This reel was fine until it suddenly decided that your ability to crank the reel tightened in unison to tightening the drag. One month, and shot I guess. Penn has waiting line of 50 to even talk warranty. Another junker in the drawer.

Battle III a real steal at nearly 40% off in end of seasaon sale. The Battle line is a tough, dourable, and versitile salt spinning reel I use for taylor blues, spanish macks, speckled trout, and puppy durm. The 4000 and 3000 sereies are great for the pier and surf paired with a medium power rod. Step down to a 2500 paired with a medium light for more of a fighting challange. Use the 5000, 6000, and 7000 series paired with heavier rods for some early fall drum fishing were 6 or more ounces is needed to hold bottom.

I have two of these reels, a 3000 and 4000. This reel is an excellent inshore reel. It can handle flounder in the back and out front, weakfish, striper and tog (if using a tog jig on a spinning rod). Nice and robust and not as heavy as some other Penn reels. The 3000 is paired with a 7foot st.croix triumph medium power fast action, and the 4000 is on a older 7foot medium heavy star stellar lite nickelite rod. Two things that are not great is that the smaller models do not come with a power handle like the dx version does. That being said, it is a pain to put an after market knob on it i.e. Gomexus. The paddle handles are riveted, so in order to change to a knob you have to drill out the paddle and bore out the handle to accept the new knob. Second thing is in cold weather the anti-reverse clutch has a tendency to slip, the absolute worst thing you want to have happen when setting the hook on a white chin while jigging in December.
Recently got a Battle 3 in the 2500 and the 3000. Love the reels the drag is the best in class. The quality control on the finish of the reels is to be desired. Both reels had imperfections in the black finish allowing the white paint to show. The 2500 had specks of the black finish missing, while the 3000 had large section of finish missing on the bail arm and specks missing on the body. For the price of these reels one expects better quality control.
I bought this reel (2500) for steelhead fishing at Erie streams. Good drag is very important for this type of fishing. I also owe few previous models and they are good reels. So, I figured it will be a good match for my new Loomis rod. First time out, while fighting big steely, the reel started spinning in reverse. I thought I accidently "knocked" the reverse lever. And then I noticed that this reel is missing reverse lever (switch on the bottom of the reel) completely, so now you can's spin the rotor in reverse; you either have to pull on the drag or flip the bail. Never seen this before! What can I say: PENN is cutting costs. In my opinion there are less expensive reels with better quality out there. And for this one: going back to Cabela's.
The Penn Battle 3 reels are perfect for bass sized fish. I just got into fishing, as an adult, in march and the penn 2500 was the best option where I was on display. It has been amazing... takes abuse amd keeps performing great. BUT... the 3000 is slightly bigger and gives noticeably more line and drag. The speed of line retrieve is also more balanced.Bottom line... a dedicated reel for bass sized fish... penn battle 3 3000 and under is perfect. Looking at size 3000 and over for more drag, that does everything?-Save up for the 3500 Penn Slammer.

The reel has very smooth gears, and the all aluminum frame eliminates flex, so the gears stay in alignment when fighting a bigger fish than you anticipated catching. I recently caught a 40" Red in Galveston, while it didn't have the drag to wench the fish in, the drag is smooth as any I've ever used and after a short fight, the reel landed the fish with ease. it features the HT 100 carbon drag washers, they come dry but I just add a small dab of Precision grease and to me, it makes a little difference in the smoothness of the drag. I didn't have to shim it at all, but with a lot of the Penn Battle reels it dips in at the top of the spool if that makes sense. With that I haven't had any wind knots, but it doesn't cast quite as far as my other brand reels. Overall a very strong little reel that does exactly what its suppose to.
Bullet proof reels. I have a couple of Battles now, including a 3000 and I just bought a 4000. I used my 3000 for west coast fishing, was a bit concerned at first, as the drag was only 15 pounds. But no issues and it handled the big salmon very well. I also dropped my combo in the water, barely saved it. Thought for sure it would be wrecked with the salt water. Got it back to the house, dried it out, re-lubricated everything and put a light coat of oil on it, and it is working like a charm. These reels are worth every penny!
for the money these are some outstanding reels. (i was very impressed) i use them for salmon and halibut here in alaska . (both from a kayak and also surf fishing) on a scale of 1 to 10 i give them a 9. (why not ten?) i like to have the small line holder on the side of the spool so when you dont have any gear on you can clip the line to the side of the spool so it does not unravel. (these reels do not have that HINT HINT PENN) other then that they cast awsome, have a killer drag and real extreamly smooth. cant beat them for the price! well done penn!
