Don’t read negative reviews about this reel. Honestly didn’t want to spend the money on another reel when my nasci seized up. I’m glad I did though. The slammer 4500 is an absolute beast of a reel! A week away in salt water without rinsing after each use, when I got home I rinsed off and opened to check for any corrosion or water ingress. Absolutely nothing! And This is why you spend a bit more on a reel in my opinion. QUALITY and longevity. Not bells and whistles! I am happy to spend more on a product knowing it will last. I do not regret spending the money on this reel at all. I will definitely be buying another. It feels really strong, really smooth, casts well and the drag sounds crisp!!

I was in Cuba 2 months ago where I have fished many times previously in 32 visits and although I have Saltiga's, Stella, and Accurate reels as well as the more mid range Cabo's, saragosa and Fin-Nor I bought the Penn Slammer III 5500 and a Spinfisher V 8500 live liner to try whilst out there. I'd intended to compare the 2 Penn offerings to those mid range reels.Firstly, the 8500 spinfisher V which impressed me with both it's robust construction and the finesse of the baitrunner system. I had maybe 25ish Barracuda to 18lb as well as Kingfish, Cuberra & Mutton Snapper. The baitrunner is strong enough to troll a dressed ballyhoo at about 7 knots and is really entertaining to hear what a fish runs. When engaging the main drag the reel suddenly snaps into a real powerhouse of a machine. The drag is really smooth and there are no heart stopping peaks in the resistance of the washers. At 59 years old I would expect those model to outlive my grandkids. I underestimated the power of this reel and should have opted for the more compact 6500.The Slammer 3.....Outstanding, fabulous, superb, unbelievable at the prices........ I'd better slow down. After landing a very good amberjack of 60lb plus? I looked down at this little reel and promised myself a 6500 as soon as possible. The drag was every bit as good as my Saltiga and smoother than my Stella. After a 100yd run the reel drag was as consistent and cool as any other reel I've ever handled. The fish made 6 or 7 other lesser, but still powerful runs and I truly was more in awe of the reel than the fish. Later my wife wanted to fish and being all of 5ft, Lorraine asked me to set her up a light bottom fishing outfit, so reluctantly I handed over the Penn jigging rod and the slammer 3. Mid water (maybe 100m) she hooked up with a Shark that turned out to be a Bull Shark of an estimated 120lb. The fish made numerous runs of 50yds and after a 28 minute fight was lost on the surface, which was a bitter sweet outcome.I've tried to enhance our experience of the reel with the day's exploits purely to make this review more interesting but I cannot praise this reel highly enough.I have my 6500 now and I'm salivating at the thought of a 7500.Where will it all end........?

I love this reel and purchased a 6500 for the heavy drag option which works great, but there is a major design flaw in the bail arm, the bail arms are not strong enough to accommodate a tight drag setting and they become beveled out at the bail screw after only a few large fish fights resulting in a sloppy bail that wont close properly or lay line on the spool correctly and I am constantly replacing the arms. If there was one major update that was needed for the new IV version its the bail arm material. Please guys come up with a solution for this, I cannot be the only person who experiences this problem as its a constant and recurring issue. This is my favorite reel and have no desire to fish anything else but it needs bail arms that can handle the max 40lb of drag.

I bought the Slammer III 6500 recently after the Slammer 4 range was released and pulled up a 80cm Mulloway as the second fish I caught with it and it handled it without a sweat. This reel feels well made and can easily pull up any fish out of the rivers/ocean. Highly rated and recommended. The only slight downside is that it's fairly heavy compared with other reels of similar size but it feels ultra quality and has good seals and would handle saltwater perfectly (make sure you rinse your reels after saltwater contact and it will last you for years).
I use this reel for vertical jigging, flat lining dead baits, kite fishing live baits and for surf fishing in SE Florida. The high speed retrieve is perfect for vertical jigging and getting lures to dance quickly across the surface. The 40 pounds of drag really helps to slow down Permit, Tuna, King Mackerel and Amberjack on their intial runs. I installed 200 yards of 20 lb mono backing with 300 yards of 20 lb braid giving me 500 yards total. Ordering a couple of spare spools for quick changes for various applications. Pair with a 9' foot CTS blank and cast poppers, spoons or hydro-pencil plugs beyond the 100 yard range from the beach. Works good for kite fishing Kings and Sailfish but a bait runner or live line feature would be nice combined with the high speed. All in all, a great innovation by Penn that every angler should have in their aresenal.
I bought the 5500 and it casts very well with 30lb braid in the surf and 4oz of weight on a 11'10" MH surf rod. Fished it pretty hard for a couple of days in the surf, too bad I didn't catch anything. Measured roughly 85yds (new to surf gear) in a field (4oz) with a laser range finder. This isn't meant to be a real long caster, but more of an in/offshore kind of reel. I think it would work equally well on a jetty too. Smooth out of the box, parts are readily available (if needed). Wasn't expecting a reel so, large... It is much bigger than expected vs a Shimano 5000. It is after-all a sealed saltwater spinning reel, go figure. I don't have anything negative to say about it.
I have purchased many Penn reels and the reel life has gone in the crapper. I still have some old Conflict and Spinfishers that are working but all of the new reels have purchased in the last year are awful. Especially the latest one a Penn Slammer 3. I used it for one weekend and now it is loud and when the handle is turned it grinds. Again, this was used for one weekend from a boat and was never dunked or even sprayed with saltwater. I always wash and dry all of my reels at the end of each day. It's not like these are an inexpensive investment.
I have been fishing Penn Slammer reels for years and have been pleased with the performance and durability of them. Many years ago I decided to purchase and use only Penn reels. Almost all of my fishing is done in salt water. I share my gear with my sons and grandson. I had the need to purchase more reels, so naturally I went with the Slammer III series. There was a change in design that requires the spool to be shimmed for proper line lay on the Slammer III series. I find this to be an annoying inconvenience especially since my reels get cleaned externally after every use. The shims sometimes come off with the spool and get misplaced. This is not the case with the older model Slammers.I understand that the newer version Slammers have stronger drag systems and are ... MoreI have been fishing Penn Slammer reels for years and have been pleased with the performance and durability of them. My wife got me this reel for Christmas because she knew I wanted it for a long time. I have trusted Penn for a long time and have bought many of their cheaper model reels like the pursuit and the fierce and I loved them so much I wanted my first high end spinning reel to be a Penn as well. I’m just going to get right down to it, this reel is an absolute pain. Even after getting the washer stack correct the reel still does not lay line evenly. The only way I can get it to lay line in a bearable manner is if I hold my rod directly up in the air and impart no action on the bait. Very dissatisfied with this product and Penn in general. I don’t have the heart to return it as it was a gift to me. I love Penn Slammer reels. Slammer III was discontinued in late 2021. I bought several Slammer III 4500s at that time and got a great deal, but could not find any more for sale after Feb of 2022. When West Marine had them again in November of 2022 I picked up two more because they were still cheaper than the Slammer IV.Unfortunately, both reels has had clicks and noises when reeling.I think this last batch of Slammer IIIs in late 2022 must have been refurbs from Penn.Thankfully West Marine took them back no problem and i coughed up a few more bucks for the Slammer IV.
