I purchased the reel for surf lure fishing. I was looking for something that was corrosion resistant and big enough for Salmon.I have been very impressed with the quality and features with this reel. Well worth the $69 I paid for it.Only complaint is the weight of the reel, it is a little heavy, being an all metal body.Overall great reel, that should last for years.

Good solid reel with a nice smooth drag. I bought two and spooled them with 20 lb mono and matched them with Shimano Taipan 701 SSL Spinning Rods. Great balanced Snapper outfit for Port Phillip Bay. Handled the big-ugly barn-door bycatch well and I'm sure will smash the Snapper this season and many after...Not 5-stars as it's a little heavier than expected, but worth that weight penalty for the toughness it offers

The Penn 650SSM is a robust and near bullet proof salt water spinning reel. Made in the USA, the design has been tried and tested for many years. The metal frame will take hard knocks and needs only minimal maintenance. Large drag washers perform well under pressure with good feel. Strong gears with plenty of cranking power. Keep the handle and bail roller well oiled and the drag washers lightly greased and you won’t have any issues. These are my number one choice for Port Phillip Bay snapper.

I bought a Penn Spinfisher 650SSM to replace an old crappy reel that finally gave up the ghost on my surf rod. I have always been a Shimano man but I went for the Penn on a recommendation from an Anaconda staff member. I am so glad I got the Penn Spinfisher. It's a tough reel with a very smooth action and drag system. I can see me, when the time comes as they wear out, replacing my Shimano reels for Penn reels. Everything about the Penn reels is perfect! Big (though smallest in this range!) weighty and sturdy all metal spinner. Durable old school construction for heavy duty fishing; these were the type of reels that cemented Penn's reputation for reliability. A tough heavy reel - not for the feint heart-ed.
Great reel for the money, hard to beat. It has more than enough line capacity, perfect for jetty or still fishing surf. The drag is ~11-13 pounds locked down but that will suffice for almost all inshore and some offshore species. I dunked mine 2x already, still smooth; just clean and lube after.
I bought one of these as a spare beach reel.It is faultlessly built,has a waterproof,HT100,smooth drag.Big retrieve per handle turn.Strong,I dropped it on concrete and it didn't break! Casts well.Chinese made? SO WHAT,YOU WOULDN'T KNOW FROM LOOKING OR USING IT.BARGAIN,I wouldn't mind buying another one,maybe a 950.Comments Added by Fishing Tackle Shop: Thanks for the feedback TED. Yes Penn like just about every other brand has been made in China for years now and still come complete with full warranty. We have sold literally thousands and have only ever had a few back.. I could probably count the returns on my fingures it's that little. Penn are a sturdy well built and very good priced reel.
