Thus far I am getting everything I hoped for out of this camera. I am satisfied with the build quality & materials, and the photos I’m getting are sharp & exposed well when I’m operating properly.Zone Focus has a bit of a learning curve, and you may need a few rolls before you become an expert. It’s going to feel more complex if graduating from a basic point and shoot, and less predictable than an SLR. But you get more control than a P&S in a similarly small package. Being able to adjust focus, push/pull, select ISO, etc makes it a more manual and customizable camera. Are there vintage cameras that with more for less? Possibly, but this camera is new, currently serviceable and more reliable than vintage equipment. You can’t put a price on peace of mind.

So this is a return to film from a mainstream camera manufacturer, the first new film camera for many years.I’m writing this while shooting my first roll of Kodak Gold 200 in the camera, so no results to see yet.The camera feels great to use and handle, sturdy construction, the film loading is nice an easy, just lay the leader up to the red marker and close the back and wind on. The viewfinder is lovely and bright and clear and has a similar system to the Pentax MX where the focus setting, on the lens, is reflected in the VF.Once you learn the flashing LEDs, they really help you not make simple mistakes.I often leave it on by accident, not sure why.It would have been nice if Pentax, included or offered a soft case for the camera.Shooting modes are easy to ...Ā MoreSo this is a return to film from a mainstream camera manufacturer, the first new film camera for many years.I’m writing this while shooting my first roll of Kodak Gold 200 in the camera, so no results to see yet.The camera feels great to use and handle, sturdy construction, the film loading is nice an easy, just lay the leader up to the red marker and close the back and wind on. The shutter and focus are so quiet it makes a great street photography tool. All in all a great new camera, hopefully a full frame version will follow.

When I wrote my initial review I had taken just a few images on a Photowalk and hadn't seen the results of my own efforts. However I have just received a roll of Ultramax back from AW with Premium scans and thought I would share a few thoughts! The Zone focussing takes a bit of getting used to, I've done this in the past but autofocus is almost universal now. Also using A mode means that things quite close to the lens aren't in focus. Its a learning curve but I don't think a long one.The Portrait mode isn't as irritating as I thought it would be, we are used to phone images like this and its easy to turn the camera around.Although half frame the lens is sharp and the images don't seem reduced in any way by the format.Macro is good and the 25cm wrist cord seems to ...Ā MoreWhen I wrote my initial review I had taken just a few images on a Photowalk and hadn't seen the results of my own efforts. Having bought my first Pentax over 50 years ago, and having had all manner of Pentaxes since, its an absolute joy to be shooting with a new Pentax film camera again. There is something unique about the brand and this camera continues the tradition.I'm making this lovely piece of kit my number 1 camera - currently pausing my longstanding passion for the 110 format (Pentax of course).

Fun and easy to use

I'm really enjoying this camera. For me it's replacing an old Olympus PEN EE from the 1960s-70s. They're both half-frame. Unsurprisingly, the Pentax 17 is superior in every way. The light meter + aperture + shutter can handle a much wider range of lighting conditions and a much wider range of film ISO settings. The result is that I can actually use the camera in a lot of situations where my PEN would have just given up.The Pentax 17 is very comfortable and pleasant. It's made of plastic. Yes, the top and bottom plates are metal, but they don't add weight to the camera so they don't feel like metal. At the same time, this camera definitely does not feel like those cheap $50 toy cameras you see in the market. The zone focusing system is new to me, and sometimes I ...Ā MoreI'm really enjoying this camera. But I'm actually enjoying the tactile feel and I'm gradually getting better at it.My only quibble with the camera is that the shutter is too quiet :-) ... It doesn't have the loud clank that a 1960s shutter has. The shutter feels a little 21st century, obviously electronic. But this is probably a good thing; it will probably prolong the life of the shutter. In any event, the build quality is excellent, the camera is fun, it is both compact and portable, yet large enough to feel comfortable in the hand. My wife and I have both been using it and we truly love it.

I never really realized how much I missed film photography until I got back into it a few years ago. I still had my Nikon 8008s from the 90's, and it didn't take long for me to acquire other used cameras, but it's always a gamble going used. This camera from Pentax is a very welcome thing in 2024. Is it exactly what I would want in a 35mm film camera? Not necessarily, but I very much get why they made the choices they did. The expose modes available are well thought out and give you enough options, although that particular dial could use a lock so that you don't accidentally change it when winding film like I have done a few times already. The zone focusing system isn't what I personally would prefer, maybe it will grow on me over time.My only real fault with the camera is the battery cover screw is not of a captivated design and I fear that it can be easily lost. Other than that I wish nothing but success for this camera. I very much hope that it's the beginning of a resurgence in film photography.

I do a lot of photography. For digital I use a Canon R8 and an R100. For film I had been using the following: Pentax K2/K1000/ME/Program Plus and a Nikon F. I bought the Pentax 17 to support Pentax's effort. I didn't want a half-frame, scale-focusing camera, but I love this camera as much as my vintage Pentaxes and it has given me a new format to play with. That engages me as a photographer. $499 ISN'T expensive for what you're getting. The price is very fair. It can be a simple point-and-shoot or a very adjustable creative camera. Like my Canon R100 it's much more sophisticated than its seeming simplicity would suggest. The quality of the Pentax 17 is excellent and everything about it is intelligently thought out. It's small but bigger than a picture of it will lead you to expect. Add a UV filter, an ND filter (for high speed film on bright days, and a lens hood to your order. I ditched the included camera strap; you will too. Maybe add a camera strap to your order. This camera has been an excellent experience and this has been yet another excellent experience with BH Photo. PS: Order your film from BH Photo because they equal and sometimes beat Amazon's prices and their shipping is as fast.

I so badly wanted to rate this a solid 5, but its more like a 4.5. When it gets a good shot, its lovely. This camera is uber-fun to use and I would make it my favored 35mm camera. Its compact, easy to handle and operate. I did not run into any of the issues with fingers in shots or changing the mode dial. I did forget to change the ISO on a roll. What I don't like is that the flash is not great for indoor shooting with any ISO speed film I've tried (100,200,400,800). Only works well when people are not too close. My biggest challenge is the focusing. Its too soft in full program mode for my tastes. When using one of the zone focus modes, my distance judgement is not as good as I convinced myself of. I miss focus too often. However, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this camera for ...Ā MoreI so badly wanted to rate this a solid 5, but its more like a 4.5. When it gets a good shot, its lovely. Also, I may be spoiled from using my rangefinder cameras, which to be fair, are multiples of the cost of this. And I really do not feel $500 is unreasonable for a new camera in 2024 that had to be researched and developed from scratch. The Mint Rollei 35 is coming next month and that is $799. Yeah I want that one too. But my point is for a new camera, $500 is great. When my rangefinders break, I will be paying a lot more to fix those.

Bought one for my wife. The camera's a ton of fun for her, and I've had a similar experience with the few shots I've taken with it. She wanted the Pentax 17 specifically because it shoots portrait orientation in default, her preferred style, so it's really a joy for her to take pictures with. The camera itself is what it is. Half frame. Zone-focus ring only (which is fully electric so has no intermediate positions between the clicks). All of its modes are automatic rather than having any real manual exposure control. Auto mode competely overrides whatever zone focus you've selected, too! Built-in flash, clear viewfinder with framing brackets. Its limitations aren't deficiencies, they are simply design choices that seek to deliver a specific experience. And it's a brand new film camera sold with a warranty in 2024. No reason not to get one, the Pentax 17 will be an iconic milestone artifact in 15 years.

This camera is a lovely travel companion. 72 shots on a roll. Sharp lens and ease of operation. The camera fits into your pockets without a problem. I am talking about short pockets not tiny back ones sorry Ladies . It is light, well built and very reliably making good exposures. Film loading is easy and max 2 sec. If someone is struggling with it sorry but it is user error. Use P mode for manual focus and AUTO for just snapping away. It took me 2 rolls to nail every zone focusing. After that you gonna know. I would recommend a clear filter on it for everyone. Because the lens is open and if you packet it gunk gonna end up in the lens mech and probably later on wont help :). The mode dial is easy to move and yeah you can move it when winding the camera but you ...Ā MoreThis camera is a lovely travel companion. 72 shots on a roll. Sharp lens and ease of operation. The mode dial is easy to move and yeah you can move it when winding the camera but you probably have 1 sec to check it. Don't rush :) it is film!.Price: so everyone is complaining about it all the time omg 500 yeah it is not cheap but you are not complaining about your iPhone which is over a grand are you? And this will be with you and your phone land in the junk yard after max 3-5 years. If you enjoy casual film photography and you want to focus on the experience and composition go for it. If you want some mega manual camera buy a good old film camera and play with it until it is alive :). Trust me it's gonna break :)
