I had been toying with buying a macro lens for a while. I was looking for a tripod and saw the lens on sale at B&H. A quick search on the Pentax forum confirmed that this was an exceptional lens, so I made the splurge.It's well built and razor sharp, coupled with nice Bokeh, that functions well in both macro and non-macro modes. It would have been nice if it had an autofocus limiter, but there is a function on the KP that can limit focus search. Also, a trick I learned on the Pentax site. This lens is a true creativity facilitator! Since I got it, I have been having so much fun playing. This lens provides super crisp and sharp detail. It's like walking around with a magnifying glass. I've been enjoying using it for macro purposes. It is also working great as a telephoto lens for birds and pets in the yard. I tried a few portraits with it and wow, also great! The bokeh on this is really nice as I've been playing around with photos of ice this winter. I mostly use this in manual focus mode and am pleased with the ability to finely dial in where I want my focus on tiny subjects. This lens is letting me do what I have always tried to do with my other lenses. It's my most used and favorite!

The construction quality of this lens is every bit as good as the construction quality of the Pentax Spotmatic camera that I remember wanting to purchase while a member of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club but alas, I spent my money like all sailors do while on liberty and I still kick myself. This lens is ideally suited for the kind of stock photography I do with my Pentax K-50 that I now own also purchased from B&H. Based on my experience so far, It promises to last for several more generations of Pentax cameras so long as Pentax maintains its tradition of limiting equipment obsolescence. I am having a lot of fun with this lens. Using it with a K3, I am able to get decent photos of insects in the field under challenging conditions - wind, fast moving insects, and low light (I do use a light ring). Because of the quality of this lens, and the resolution/image stabilization of the K3, I am able to get decent handheld photos of tiny planthoppers and aphids. The depth of field issue when shooting at short focal distances causes focus problems, of course. Although I do not use focus stacking software, layering selected in -focus components of a subject shot in burst mode is my low tech means to correct out of focus areas. For me, using this lens in the field involves a lot of trial and error, plenty of missed and unusable shots, and luck due to movement ... MoreI am having a lot of fun with this lens. I cannot say enough good things about this lens. This lens is exemplary in the Big 3 categories of a lens. First the lens produces beautiful images. Second the lens is one of Pentax's WR lenses. They are durable and protected against the elements which will result in years of getting images. Third due to the fast f/2.8 you get fast auto-focus and if you use manual focusing you get a bright viewfinder to do so. This lens reminds me of the "good old days" of lens manufacturing. (with exception of no aperture ring, camera controls aperture). If you find one at a good price, buy it. You will not be disappointed. The new version of this lens labeled AW retails for over $500 (from what I have seen on other auctions)

It's only limiting factor is that one has to get pretty close to the subject for macro shots. The SMC-D FA 100mm WR permits being at a bit of a distance to do macro work. This is an advantage in photographing such things as birds, insects, flowers in the wind, etc. To make this review short, I will say that hands down, this is absolutely the sharpest lens in my Pentax lineup (I have a total of 7 Pentax lenses for my K-3). I give the lens very high marks, and were it not for the focus hunting, I'd give it a 10 overall. But mark my words - you will have to look far and wide to find a sharper lens for macro work.
I am just starting out in macro photography and have only taken what I consider to be test shots. I love the look it provides with one exception. The bokeh seems jittery if there is any "busyness" in the background; you can see that in the sample images provided with these reviews. On the other hand, I got much better results in an aquarium than I saw in the reviews here. If the upload works from my tablet, you'll find a hand-held focus stack of miniature anemones.

Images have had good color and contrast in a variety of lighting conditions. Purple fringe (CA) is evident on high contrast edges, especially if you zoom in on the pixels. Easily fixed in post processing, but notable. Focus motor is quite loud. I agree that a focus limiter would be nice. The stroke of the front element is long and if it misses focus, it has to move a very long way to sweep the full range and regain it. In the first attached photo, you'll see the K3 on tripod with lens at minimum focus to get an idea of how close you might be to your subject for full macro. The lower right in that image shows what the camera sees at that distance. Notice how shallow the depth of field is in daylight at maximum (2.8) aperture: the depth of a nickle is already out of focus. Macro requires a lot of light in order to stop-down and gain depth. It's the nature of the beast, as I understand it, and some of the best images we've seen have actually been composite stacks. The upper right inset shows the lens compared with the Pentax 55 1.4. The little tree frog is only about 25mm long; basking in the setting sun on my front storm door. The image is cropped, not at minimum focus (I was afraid of scaring him off). ISO 100, F4, 1/200/sec, hand-held. I bought this lens here at BH while it was on discount from Pentax (instant rebate?). It is now my least expensive lens and as such, the best bang-for-the-buck so far. I am pleased and delighted. I hope it lasts a good long time. And, unless I am mistaken, it will be fully functional on the K1 should I ever wish to join the full-frame crowd.
