Have had this lens three weeks & have been out with it several times already with it mounted to my K-1. It has exceeded my expectations. My only comparison is to my Nikon 80-200 f/2.8D (non-AF-S)mounted on my D750. Not exactly apples to apples, but close I think. The Pentax combo is sharper I think. Auto focus seems fast to me, but my only reference would be my 200-400 G AF-S VR f/4 Nikon on the D750, & that's probably not a fair comparison. The tripod collar is a definite step up from the Nikon in design & function. it's sturdier, easily removable, & the detents at 90 deg. intervals is very handy. This lens is noticeably heavier than the Nikon, but that's not important to me. This big heavy beast is astonishingly sharp at all focal lengths, even wide open. I have used it for animals and outdoor sport, where perhaps it isn't really long enough on the K1, but I can crop heavily and still get far sharper and more compelling images than with the DA 55-300 at 300mm. The bokeh is delightfully smooth, and the AF very precise. The D FA* 70-200 is certainly a bag of (superb) primes, though bear in mind that it is probably heavier than a collection of good primes covering the same range. The lens does not extend when focusing or zooming, making weather sealing much more effective (AW rather than WR). The manual focusing ring is beautifully smooth and precise, and easily operated with one finger. The tripod foot is very secure, but easily removed. ... MoreThis big heavy beast is astonishingly sharp at all focal lengths, even wide open. Despite its weight, the 70-200 is quite easy to hand-hold in decent light. For long periods though, many users may like to use a tripod or monopod.

First off, I tried this lens on all 3 of my Pentax k3 bodies. Sometimes the subject was in focus. Most often the subject was out of focus or VERY soft. This occurred whether I used the lens handheld, with a monopod, or with a tripod (an old Bogen with a Manfrotto head that I used when shooting with my Pentax 560mm lens). Second, I compared the images to those shot with my Pentax 300mm prime. NO comparison. The 300mm prime beat the 70-200mm in image quality and speed of acquiring focus. My understanding from the descriptions of the 70-200 was that it was effectively a 103mm-307mm lens when used on a camera like the K3. This was not the case. It functioned as a 70-200mm lens. Furthermore, the images turn out better using my Sigma 70-200mm lens. Then there is the ... MoreFirst off, I tried this lens on all 3 of my Pentax k3 bodies. Sometimes the subject was in focus. I am going back to using my Pentax 50-135mm f/2.8 and my Pentax 16-50mm f/2.8s and my dual camera strap. They have served me well for the last few years and are much easier for me to handle. Some people demean these 2 lenses as slow focusing. No, they are not the fastest focusing lenses on the market, but they have served me well and it is rare that I miss a capture. I plan on returning this Pentax 70-200mm lens to B&H, something I have never done with anything I have bought from B&H before.

I bought this for use on the K-1 and love it. Image quality is excellent from corner to corner up and down the zoom range (even at 200 and wide open), focus is silent and quick, it's a pleasure to use, and built like a tank--this thing will survive the zombie apocalypse. And that's really the only downside: this is not a lens you just casually throw in your bag or carry around. No question, it's the best Pentax zoom I've owned, and my second favorite portrait lens behind the 77 Limited. Though this lens doesn't have the vignetting or purple fringing of the 77 and is certainly technically better, I still think I slightly prefer the tones, bokeh, and 'character' of the 77 (though that could be just because I'm used to it). Highly recommend to anyone thinking about it--it's a good addition.
Excellent image quality and build. I hate heavy gear but will carry this around on my K-1 MII for hours when the shooting is good. Really even, sharp images at 70mm, fully open aperture. It is all about the light: f/2.8 combo with K1's low light performance (image stabilization for longer exposures + great sensitivity in shadows) means increased shooting opportunities in natural settings, with wide depth of field control and bokeh for portraiture and still life. The weather sealing gives me peace of mind to shoot in bad weather. One star off because of weight, but to get the good optics and durable build, it is probably necessary. First Image is uncropped, handheld (against tree), LR contrast and monochrome added, saved as JPG in PS. Second image is raw as shot at ... MoreExcellent image quality and build. When I bought this lens, a year or so ago I did not imagine how useful it would be. It is a beast in all situations in which one demands it. Impressive in portraits, landscapes and sports. If the photos do not look better it's because you need to master the camera better but the lens is always up to what is expected of it. The sharpness is beautiful and the bokeh too, for me it is fast enough in the speed of focus and never, never disappoints me. The only problem is its weight but I bought it knowing the detail. The best pictures I have taken, according to the people who have seen them, coincide with the ones I have made with this lens. My camera is a K1. I think that before deciding to spend more money on other artifacts, you have to master what you have and make the camera and the lens obey you and not the other way around. With this lens my photos have been progressively improving and I do not get tired of seeing the quality of the images that can be obtained if you manage to master it enough. It is a tremendous ally if there is little light and you know the camera enough. Without a doubt, if I had to choose my favorite lens is this total beast. I love it absolutely
I've only had this lens a week, and my first impression is that this is a top shelf product. It is solid and very well made, focuses very quickly and quietly, comes with a nice zip-up carry case, takes gorgeous pictures, the zoom and focus rings operate smoothly, and it feels great on my K1. The removable rotating tripod collar makes switching from landscape to portrait a breeze. I have tried to think of something I don't like about this lens, but I can't. This is a heavy, expensive lens, but the quality of construction justifies both the weight and the cost. I waited for a while to save the money to buy it, and It appears to be well worth the wait. I dont normally write reviews as I dont think of myself knowledgable enough. However I am writing what I would have liked to hear prior to my purchase: this lens is not a replacement for primes, you will not get the same IQ regardless of its Pentax star rating. It took me a long time to get some use with it as it was just too heavy for many excursions however I persevered happy in the thought its IQ was to be amazing. My copy is similar iq to my DA 18-135 I had on my k3. I just cannot get an image as sharp as even my old 55-300. It is not a focus issue as there are no really sharp points through the image wide open. At 200mm it is no better. It does isolate subject beautifully and takes wonderful portraits with smooth tones. If HI quality is what you're after, this lens is an EXCELLENT choice for sharp, clear, fast photography! Amazing smooth manual overrides for zoom & focus, Although stabilization would be a plus, in-body IBIS is adequate. A well-balanced lens even without a tripod! Excellent for the "night stalker" enthusiaist!
Got this lens to use instead of my 60-250, hoping to get better auto focus for sports photography. Wow, what a difference! This lens finds the mark, and quickly. Mainly I shoot at 2.8 to isolate subject from background, and this is working well as 2.8 is very sharp. Recently covered a soccer tournament in wet, dull weather. The 60-250 would have been put away, but the 70-200 was excellent. And there is also the added bonus of using higher iso and not having noisy low saturation images. I take photos for a living, and when I looked at the increase in keeper images to sell, and as well as over all wow factor I worked out it will pay for itself with increased sales in two years. Have used in rain and no problem there. This really is an incredible lens near to perfect ... MoreGot this lens to use instead of my 60-250, hoping to get better auto focus for sports photography. Only downside, is weight, where a monopod is important if shooting for any extended length of time. We now have 2 great lenses for sports action, the DA300 f4 and 70-200 f2.8, no more fighting between myself and partner for the 300!
