PetSafe Electronic SmartDoor, Automatic Dog and Cat Door, Small, Collar Activated with SmartKey
The Electronic SmartDoor Pet Door gives your pet a key to the house so he can come and go as he pleases. Using radio-frequency technology, the pet door reads the unique signal of a SmartKey worn on your pet’s collar and triggers the battery power-driven flap to unlock. When the pet door no longer senses your pet’s SmartKey Collar Key, the flap automatically locks back into place. The SmartDoor can detect up to 5 programmed SmartKey Collar Keys and also operates in 2 other modes, fully locked mode and unlocked mode. Locked mode does not allow entry or exit for any pet and unlocked mode allows entry and exit for all pets.

I bought this doggy door off of Amazon in March of 2022. My German Short Haired Pointer puppy loves this door! It has worked great. She's able to have freedom throughout the day while I'm at work and it also keeps my cats inside. I noticed some cracks in the door so I reached out to customer service. I was just barely over the one-year warranty period, by maybe a couple of weeks. I knew there was a good chance they wouldn't be able to send me any replacement parts, but I figured it was worth a shot. To my surprise, they sent me a free replacement door, even though I was no longer in the warranty window. I got the door within a week of sending the email to customer service. I don't know what I would do without this door! :)

Bought the large door almost 3 years ago, the door is a good product but like all things built today, things do not last. I called customer support (they are very nice and tried to help). We did a few things to try and "fix" the problem but unable to due to "Internal Malfunction." They did offer a 10% discount on a new door but even with a discount you can go to Amazon and buy it cheaper. My door gets normal use, no destructive dogs, misuse or abuse (out of the weather elements) and can only get a few years use out of it. It's really a shame for product that causes alterations on a residence which will cause more cost (like replacing a door) just to break after a few years.

I've had the door installed a couple weeks. It does do the job of letting the dogs out but preventing the cats from getting out. It is loud when it locks/unlocks as stated in other reviews, but not a huge bother since it's at the end of a hallway. Other reviewers have stated concerns about the quality/durability of the components and I also have a problem with that. The electronic key fell off our dog's collar last night while he was outside. Either the provided jump ring failed or the plastic loop on the key itself broke. I can't find it in the snow outside. Lucky we were home and the dog wasn't stuck outside in sub-freezing temps for very long.

We have had seven of these doors since 2016 and finally gave up on purchasing this model. This was a hard decision because our metal door is cut out to fit this particular model. We have had the same problem every time. Luckily the company has excellent customer service and has helped us out a couple times. Originally I didn't realize I could call them for warranty issues and wish I would have before purchasing five other times. Live and learn. The problem is the plastic hinge that holds on the door snaps from 3 to 6 months after use. We have followed the directions to a tee, have medium sized dogs and still have problems with the hinge breaking in the same place every time. We've tried to replace the hinge and they don't have that option we talked about having a machinist make a metal bracket but it was impossible to get into the door to replace it without damage. We have now upgraded to their new model that has Wi-Fi enabled features, an app and is much more costly but we're hoping for good results. It has a two year warranty so fingers crossed.
I recently bought this and installed on our bsck door. I have to say that I'm having some regrets. The door was easy to install and is a good size for my 2 dogs, but there are several things I am not pleased with. #1 -- the key is HUGE and super awkward. I expected it to be similar to an underground fence collar but it isn't. Even on our large dog it hangs awkwardly on her collar and she gets it hung on stuff. It's ridiculous on our Boston Terrier. I can't even leave it on his collar which defeats the purpose. #2 -- the flap is poorly designed. It really has to be pushed hard to open and it has a tendency to swing back and catch them if they are just trying to look out. It's also really hard to train the dogs to use compared to other doors. It really has to be pushed hard to open and it has a tendency to swing back and catch them if they are just trying to look out. It's also really hard to train the dogs to use compared to other doors. The key doesn't unlock quick enough and it's so loud that it scares them. It burns through batteries way too fast. I wish I could buy a rubber flap to switch out but unfortunately I'm stuck because nothing like this is offered. So I paid extra for a sensor lock that is useless because of the huge, awkward keys and now I'm stuck with the weird locking flap that my dogs don't realize is open unless I prop it open. Huge waste of money that I'm stuck with.
We had some trouble with our first one, but it was replaced under warranty and this one has lasted about 9 years ago far, with three dogs. It functions well, our oldest and biggest needs to be able to put at night without letting coyotes in, so it works well for that. We leave it unlocked during the day.It can be loud as it swings back and forth, which is either a flaw or a feature. It needs more magnets, at least here, as 20 mph winds are enough to blow it open and hold it open (interfering with the auto lock feature), and we get those quite often. In auto lock it can lock while swinging, which results in a jam that can only be fixed manually, defeating the purpose. The collar batteries are standard button cells, but they embed them in plastic to make them ... I bought this door because i wanted my large cat to be able to escape to my bedroom when the younger cat was bothering him and keep the younger cat out of my room.It was hard for my cat who is very skddish to get used to the very loud noise the door makes when locking/unlocking but once he got used to it it was ok. That took about a month. I left for a 10 vacation and had people checking on my cats. They only ever saw the young one and i thought my shy boy was just hiding in the bedroom. In actually he was trapped in there because the door stopped working! Good thing he had water! Unfortunately my rugs are now ruined. :(I wouldn't recommend.
Just wish they would find a way to insulate from the elements. Thats really my only complaint, and it really isnt a complaint, more of a suggestion. Ive had one before, and Ive made my own work around, but it would be nice if PetSafe could have it included. Also hope that one day theyll find a way to make it not quite as noisy when it opens. When it closes, its great! Couldnt it be the same way when it opens? My puppy is okay going through it now,but it did take her a few dozen shoves through the door to get her used to it.
We've had this door for 2 years and it works how we need it to-keeping the cat out and gives the dog freedom to go in and out any time.Pros: Dog "key" works consistently; has held up with dog going in and out all day and in direct sunlight/110+ degree weather; low cost for what we need (compared to other sensor doors).Cons: Batteries (4 D size!) need replaced every couple months; activates over and over if our dog lays by the door; pretty loud when activated-We can hear him go in and out from the upstairs rooms; Takes about 5 loud seconds to close; occasionally activates randomly or doesn't reclose quickly so the cat will sneak in; not well sealed if in the open position and no weather sealing when closed-rain gets if its pouring; collar "key" is somewhat bulky ... I may upgrade to the $500 coming soon model eventually, once this one stops working.
I purchased this dog door when I first moved to help my dog get out and cat stay in. the door does have some problems (key gets disconnected sometimes and if my cat gets to it quick enough he can make it out and lock the door wrong. it also has a not so strong flap connector and my shepherd has knocked it out I think 3 times so far.) besides the acasenal mess up with the door it is by far my favorite home perches. the company is beyond amazing and their customer service is wonderful! every time I call they are so friendly in helping me with my situation. I will continue to tell my friends and family to get dog doors from pet safe. if they need anyone to test out stronger door flap supports me and my shepherd will gladly put it to the test!
