Petzl - William Ball-Lock
Petzl William Ball-Lock HMS carabiner grey/black - The William Ball Lock by Petzl provides an additional degree of safety! The carabiner is equipped with the ball lock closure. By this design principle, you can see at a glance whether the carabiner is secured correctly. The carabiner is only safely locked when the little green dot on the sleeve is visible. The William Ball Lock is opened by pressing the green button. The HMS carabiner is thereby more secure than other auto-lock carabiners. Thanks to its classic pear shape, the carabiner is best suited to being secured with a Munter hitch, but can also be combined with belay devices. The design combines its light weight with high breaking loads and excellent handling. The key lock system prevents snagging on bolts or dogbones - that's what an all-round well thought out HMS looks like!

Now I got to say since the last Carabiner I had used I did like alot. But again all of these different types of carabiners are beeing used for many unique advantages while climbing or what ever it is your using yours for. But the Green little ball is great 👍because that must be pressed and then twist and pull. Its definitely a one handed ✋ carabiner. And that says it all when your hands are tied with rope and other equipment. This one has a nice design which allows more room for a less rope friction. We all know we hate Friction but when it comes a time where it can be acceptable. This one here is a Buy and Hold. For Treestuff.com it is a Sell Sell Sell. #TRUTREE #PETZL

This is the safest carabiner on the market. I highly recommend all these styles of push button/ ball lock carabiners from Petzl. They last a long time with care and remember to always inspect gear. Climb safe everybody.. remember when you are in the tree u are boss!!! Don’t let any one rush you or do something u don’t feel comfortable with.. that’s how SHTF and bad stuff happens

I am a gym climber at the moment 100% and safety is always a good priority for me in general regardless of where you are. I like the ball lock because it's an extra level for the twist lock. It also helps when you take a friend to the gym, small but devastating mistakes can be avoided like not locking the screw gate.I have no issues opening and closing the ball lock, just takes a few tries to get into being muscle memory. A few of my experienced climber friends have also used it when borrowing my belay device, and found no issues operating it. Honestly it really just comes down to preference with this Carabiner, but the design and functionality are 100% on point!

Won one of these for free at a climbing festival sponsored by petzl. Best biner to use with the edelrid jul in guide mode because the massive gate opening makes it way easy to get the biner inside the juls wire keeper. I dont like rapelling with it because its huge and can get cross loaded easy if you unweight an extended rappel. Overall I like it, I think the gate opens too easy compared to other triple lockers I use.
It's great for belaying and it's big enough you could use a munter hitch if you had to. A solid piece of gear you would expect from petzel. I'm giving it four stars instead of five only because I took it canyoneering and it got some sand in the mechanism which was hard to clean out till I got back home, so it would not auto lock and I had to check it was secure and help it along the whole trip. Again I was in some pretty fine sand which was getting everywhere, and once I got home and washed it and oiled it, the device was good as new. But for that trip it wasn't ideal
I've been climbing for 15 years now and I own two of these- I abhor the locking mechanism and they sit in the house. Beautiful in theory, the ball is difficult to locate and depress with bare hands, let alone gloves. There are some pros to this design, like the impossibility of the rope unscrewing the gate as with a screwgate or traditional twistgate, but in my opinion any such advantage is outweighed by how frustrating it is to operate! It's a shame they couldn't succesfully improve upon the design because the Petzl William screwgate is one of my favorite biners. Do yourself a favor and go with a screw or twist gate William, they rock.
An excellent wide gate opening, wide basket auto locker for myriad uses. I use these primarily for lead rope soloing bottom anchors and belays where they need to be absolutely reliable when unsupervised. The ball lock function is bomber and the size (a fraction smaller than a DMM Boa for reference) is ideal for a couple of rope clove hitches when equalising gear. Brilliant bit of fasten and forget kit for safety critical applications.
I prefer auto-locking munter shape carabiners like this for anchors. I’ve had screw locks roll open on anchor setups in the past. I dont climb in ice and snow so don’t know how the push button would fair in that environment, but it works great for rock. I bought a second for my wife after she got jealous of my new hardware.
- ball lock technology functions smoothly for easy opening with optimal safety (preventing accidental opening while belaying-- easy to keep your belay device on and switch from gear loop to belay loop- HMS design and size allows for excellent use with Edelrid jul devices; or others benefiting from the wider, pear shape
The William ball lock carabiner has a high strength rating of 27kn, and is on the large end of the spectrum. Still the same wide opening snag-free key lock design as the William Screw Lock, but with a button safety twist gate. I typically use this as my masterpoint carabiner on multi-pitch trad anchors and top rope anchors due to its strength rating and it's rope capacity. There's plenty of room to fit two clove hitches with a 10.2 rope. The ball lock is very easy to manipulate, push button and turn. Release the gate and it snaps shut, automatically twisting back into locked orientation. Very secure, and quicker than rotating a screw lock. Durability seems to be no issue, clacked around on several granite routes over the past year.
