I had always been interested in Phillips Ambilight TV's backlight feature but liked other TV's quality better. This way I could add that feature that 'extends' the color on the screen around the TV for hopefully a different kind of immersible feeling. This does accomplish that with the Hue Play Bars. The physical setup was easy, but you have to use the app for everything. Not just one app but two! The first is for Hue bulbs, then you have to download and use a Hue sync app which connects to the first Hue app. It would be nice if I could figure out a physical button or remote to start and stop the syncing. It would also be nice if when you shut the TV off the lights would go off instead of having to open the app (and go on too). The only caveat is that you really need your TV to not be flush mounted as the light then shines on the TV some or is too far from the screen to create the immersion. It was not a good experience with my Samsung Frame but when I put it on my Pionneer ZT which is about three inches out from the wall, it worked like advertised. I finally moved it to my gaming PC and it seemed to be the most immersive there because the bounced light filled my entire field of view.

To some degree, I feel like Philips can charge these kind of prices for there Hue line-up because no other companies can compete seriously. This Hue Sync Box + Hue Gradient Lights is a AMAZING combo.I wouldn't buy this if you didn't also have/get the Hue Gradient Lights. In doing so, you're spending several hundreds of dollars. It's not a cheap accessory, but boy does it at more depth to movies and shows. I don't always use this sync box, but that's kind of the beauty of it. By default it's off. So, if I tell Google to turn on my TV lights, it will turn on the Hue Gradient Lights without automatically syncing.. because sometimes, I just want a static back lighting. I have owned the sync box for about a year and a half and have had a lot of fun using it. Setting up the entertainment areas was easy as the process is pretty streamlined.Once I got it all set up I thoroughly enjoyed using it. It has adjustments so sometimes I can have it be more intense or less intense, change brightness, and activate certain lights. It has four HDMI ports on the back so it makes it easy to switch between inputs. The only other issue I had were the lights randomly going off after a while and the entire screen turning off randomly. Easy fix but still annoying.
The Hue Play HDMI Sync Box works fantastically and was simple enough to set up. I'm enjoying it and will absolutely keep it. Two things that are pretty major to me keep me from getting this to 5 stars, though. One, The HDMI ports are only HDMI 2.0b. I have a PlayStation 5 and don't really want to sacrifice the full capabilities of my console just to make some lights run in sync with my games. The 120Hz refresh rate at 4K resolution is the only thing the Hue Sync Box *can't* do (it maxes at 4K 60Hz), but it's a pretty big demerit point personally. I'd willingly pay a bit more for a new version of this box that has HDMI 2.1 ports instead, even if just 1 or 2 of them. Two, smart TV app compatibility. This is less of a sticking point as it's easily solved with a streaming device and a couple more button presses to switch inputs, but it would be great to only need my TV to sync with content via apps. To those with new model Samsung TVs, rejoice, because you don't have this limitation, but as most people's TVs are smart nowadays it's disappointing that only a single brand can work directly with the box.Criticisms aside, I'd like to reiterate that this is still a fantastic product and adds a whole new dimension to a home theater or gaming space, and I do recommend it.
Setup of the Hue box was pretty simple and straight forward; however, its size and later integration were a bit problematic. For the former, youâll want to plan ahead, particularly if youâre using a minimal or small entertainment setup as the form factor. While thin, is a bit wide and can become a bit deep when you add HDMI cables out the back, so think through your cable management and make sure you give yourself enough room - you may have to buy new cables as I did! For the latter, the actual HomeKit integration could use a lot of love. The homebridge integration, while fantastic, can be a bit overwhelming for a novice user - timing the integration handoff can be quite frustrating - and the outcome as well is a bit overwhelming. But if contrast to the native integration which is very basic Siri integration, its not really enough. Further, if youâre doing any kind of network isolation, and working across VLANs, the natives integration isnât very reliable - in fact, I never got it to work within Shortcut. Ideally, the HomeKit integration would make it easy to switch between HDMI inputs, turn off/on the sync as well as pick your scene. This is all available on homebridge, but far from a clean experience.Lastly, the tech on this is just a bit old compared to the latest HDMI standard as well as higher resolutions on the horizon, and although the âcompatibility modeâ makes things work, its a bit finicky and has quite a bit of delay when switching between formats - such as when you go form Dolby Vision back to SDR when leaving a movie.Although thereâs a lot of complaining, once its working, its pretty magnificent with both AppleTV as well as Xbox, and I definitely do not regrets the purchase.
I had high hopes for this product. Got it home, plugged it in, did all the set up, and nothing. Didnât work. Contacted Phillips hue support (which is annoying because you can only contact them through Facebook) and every conversation with them was ridiculous. You have to wait 1+ hours before you get a response and even if you message back right away, you still have to wait again. And since itâs someone new replying each time, they have no idea what is going on. From my experience they donât seem to review previous messages to get more of an understanding about what is going on and I had to say many times âyouâve already asked me to do this and Iâve done it multiple timesâ and then you get asked again. Some of the things I was asked to do was. Uninstall the app and reinstall it(hope you remember your log in info), reset your light bridge and reset all your lights. As someone with a lot of lights, this was VERY irritating. I had to go back in and rename all of them and reset my scenes and everything. Just to find out that, youâve guessed it, it still didnât work. The lights would react when I would want to sync them. They would just turn white and dim. So the device was communicating with them so it doesnât make sense why they would want me to reset the lights when the issue is clear that the box wasnât sending the right signals out. Do not purchase this unless you want to add more suffering to your week
For the price this is not worth it. Barely functional most of the time. You also have to install two separate apps and switch between the two depending on what you want to do.Quality of the strips and environment is awesome when it works, but until the app is fixed, the entire experience is terrible.I've had the sync box for a few months and it has been a little testy with holding a connection at times, but usable. In the last few weeks it's been borderline broken and I can't figure it out.I can start the sync everytime, but once I adjust 1 setting, like brightness, or intensity, it loses the connection and never reconnects. It will continue syncing the lights but I'm unable to change anything. Only way is to completely kill the app, stop the sync and restart ... MoreFor the price this is not worth it. So everyone complains about how overpriced Philips Hue products are and Philips should get the hint and reduce the prices to be within reason⊠I have just gotten into Philips Hue Lights switching from Sengled. Overall willing to overpay because it is superior qualityâŠ.When I found out about this box I was willing to overpay for it too because I really wanted to sync movies workouts etc with my lights. Overall it works and is neat.. The thing is.. For the unreasonably high price for this box, it is fair to expect near perfection from it.. Not the case⊠Every time I turn it on the screen flickers several times from black to static screen to purple and back, before a stable picture is displayed and it may go purple again in the next minute before it stopped⊠I ... MoreSo everyone complains about how overpriced Philips Hue products are and Philips should get the hint and reduce the prices to be within reason⊠I have just gotten into Philips Hue Lights switching from Sengled. Not the case⊠Every time I turn it on the screen flickers several times from black to static screen to purple and back, before a stable picture is displayed and it may go purple again in the next minute before it stopped⊠I figured this was related to auto input detection so I switched to manual input and manually selected the ONE powered on input and it still flickered like mentionedâŠAlso something everyone should think about: This will complicate your TV setup⊠You will need to âStart Syncâ from your phone each time.. I found eating while watching a movie with flickering lights was unpleasant so I switched to regular and then turned back on. All requiring my phone app.. My wife got very irritated with Apple TV ânot workingâ because of that flickering issue and I had to explain how she needs to wait⊠A lot of unnecessary complications for a little extra enjoyment. My take on Philips Hue products in general is they are definitely over priced but higher end and you can do things with it you cant with other setups such as scenes which you can even derive from any picture, etc. And no other setup I know of even has a native equivalent for the HDMI Sync box⊠However, with price in view, again, you have the right to demand nearly flawless performance. Thus I am returning this overpriced box. I love my lights but if they fell short of flawless performance within return period they would go straight back too.. Regardless Philips needs to rethink their pricing structure.
I have only been using this for less than a week, but so far it is a fun add on to my Phillips hue system. I purchased this, along with the Philips - Hue Play White & Color Ambiance Smart LED Bar Light - Multicolor for my 55" Samsung QLED TV. I also recently purchased hue white and color ambiance gradient (not the play gradient for behind tv) lightstrips that I ran under a new metal bed frame's edges. I was only really expecting this to sync with those hue lights, but it syncs well with all my light bulbs in my bedroom which are hue white and color ambiance standard sized light bulbs. My biggest concern was if this play box would actually work with my chromecast, as I use that to stream basically everything I watch, and so far it is working very well. I will probably need a 2nd light bar, or a hue play gradient lightstrip 55" to achieve the full effect I'd like behind my tv. Hopefully this continues to work well and I don't run into problems others have mentioned.
