A shaver that’s value for money

Did some research and my findings is that the Series 5000 shaver (particularly the S5582) is Philips’ mid range wet and dry electric shaver. Since I am not the type who can grow any semblance of a beard in 5 or 7 days, features of the more premium 9000 or 7000 series will be lost on me and at the price point of the 5000 series shaver, one can also save quite a bit. The shaver itself is well built. Good weight and well balanced, which is the main point, I guess. The LED indicators are sparse but intuitive. The locking feature is useful especially for travel, preventing the shaver from turning on and draining all the battery while in transit. Dry shaving with the S5582 shaver is good enough. However, the standout trait of this shaver is how well it handles wet shaving. I lathered up and the shaver was able to very comfortably glide through my skin with no drag while providing a very close shave — especially near the jawline area where it has traditionally been a more difficult area for a clean shave for me. All this while, the shaver hugs the face well and I am left with a close shave without any irritation whatsoever. Rinsing off after a wet shave is also very straightforward and easy. The items in the box are relatively sparse though: the shaver, a protective cap and a teeny tiny brush. The documentation did show other accessories such as the Quick Clean Pod and Soft Pouch. However, those accessories are only available for the more expensive S5579. So do pay attention to which product you are purchasing. I’m a little caught off guard as I was really looking forward to trying out the cleaning pod. The documentation can be confusing since it lumps 10 different products into a single wordless guide, users have to figure out which feature and/or accessory is applicable to the shaver that they are using. All in all, a good shaver that does the job well at a very reasonable price point.

I read the instructions while it was charging and always properly use, clean and store it sticking to shaving every other day so my skin would adjust to the shaver. I’ve had this for 2 months and 3 days and while it does shave most of my stubble it does not get all of it even after cleaning it once I’m done with a sedition of my face. First I thought, maybe I’m not using it properly on the unshaven part….but after keeping notes of the areas it’s not shaving I saw it’s not in the same areas. If I could pick one, replace the razors more frequently or leaving stubble and use a razor….I would rather buy the razor heads more frequently honestly.

Probably the best rotary shaver ever made. This model is akin to the old-style Norelco shavers of the 90s into the 2000s. Only with a modern look and feel. For a while, since 2015 or so I think, most Philips Norelco models had heads with two rows of blades and were somewhat open on the outside. I feel this was a mistake as skin could get caught in the open spaces. This model however has the blades completely enclosed by the comb with one row of blades. Like the old ones used to be. And believe me, one row of blades is fine. I get a great shave from this model. Speaking of lift-and-cut, that was not a meaningless marketing slogan. If the hairs were long enough you could actually feel them being plucked, ouch. Fortunately gone are the days of nickel-cadmium batteries taking 8 hours to charge and dry shaving only. This is the new era of electric shaving. The blades are self sharpening and most if not all models are now wet / dry. This model feels sturdy and solid with good weight. Fits well in the hand. And the motor is strong but not too loud. And the blades cut through stubble like it's not even there. I've used many norelco models through the years. But there's something about this one. It cuts cleaner, easier and faster. And it just feels better on my face, and in my hand. I shave in the shower with Nivea Men Sensitive gel, because I'm a sensitive guy. And if I'm in a hurry I shave dry. It's nice to have the option of either. This is the best Norelco so far, and it's not even the really expensive model.

Best shave I have ever gotten!
4 February 2023

I have shaved with Norelco razors off and on for the past 50 years, and continuously for the past 30 years. They are great razors, but this one is truly outstanding. As long as you use gentle but consistent pressure and use a slow, mostly clockwise rotation in your technique, you get a fast, close, non-irritating shave (and I don’t use any pre-shave and always shave dry). I can’t emphasize enough how close this thing shaves! Closer than a blade, in my experience. Usually, something that close will leave irritation, but no, none, and I have pretty sensitive skin. The razor is pretty quiet, very easy to clean, and well-balanced. The trimmer is substantial and stays in place for accurate trimming. After a month and a half of shaving with this razor, I have recharged it only once, disassembled it, and cleaned the heads—all very easy. The shaves have just gotten even faster and closer, and I shave every three days now. Charging is remarkably fast. I remove the shaved whiskers from the head assembly after every shave, and run hot water on the heads while in place in the open head assembly after every other shave and then spray a little shaver lubricant on the heads after closing the head assembly, shaking the razor dry, and turning on the razor for about 20 seconds. I wish Norelco would bring back their name-brand spray lubricant, but "Shaver Shaver" spray lubricant will do the job, too.

Close Shave

Well consider me impressed! I thought there was no way an electric razor could ever give me as close a shave as my traditional refillable razor yet this one sure does. I like that the shaver is very lightweight and its operation is relatively quiet. But it is still extremely convincing. I could hear and feel it powering through stubborn stubble on all areas of my face and neck leaving behind soft, smooth feeling skin. An included protective cap and travel lock feature also means it is convenient to take along with me on the go when taking a trip or to tossing in a bag for after the gym or touchup for the end of the work day before heading out. I used mine mainly for dry shaving but I also like that it is versatile enough to also use wet, with shaving products like creams or gels, and even in the shower.

I've always used Phillips electric shavers, with the odd failed flirtations, with Braun, Panasonic and Remington. The Panasonic was the best of these but I only keep it as a back up. This is the first Phillips with this type of floating head design that I have had and, although I am getting used to it, it isnt as accurate around my goatee as my traditional styled one. The trimmer because of its position can also tend to fold back on itself when trimming say the neckline, though it is pretty good on the sideboards. I would not condemn this type of head but style has taken over function as I would want the surround to the blades to be as small as possible and certainly not squared off just for the cool look. Just round the corners on the head guys, oh and a bit mean not to include a plastic head guard. I've always had that in the past.

Nice electric shaver

This new Norelco shaver is a big change from my current one. Some things I really like about it and a couple not so much. Starting with the not so much is the fact that there's no charger for this shaver, it just comes with a cable with a USB end. My current Norelco has a nice charger base it sits upright in and plugs into the wall. The shave head on this is also considerably larger than my current one and takes some getting used to for trimming around tight spots on the face. Now for the good, this shaver requires very little effort for shaving stubble on my face and gets it all with only a couple passes. One of the best electric shavers!
1 December 2021

There is definitely abundance of choice when it comes to electric shavers but undoubtedly one of the most reliable and sought-after brand has to be Philips. I have been using Philips for so many years and they are one of the longest lasting shavers and I have been using them since young. This 5000 series serves the as described and does gives and feels luxurious and premium. It is gentle on skin even though I bring the shaver as close to the skin as possible since I like close shave as the heads adjust to my face shape and goes around for the closest shave. I have been used to dry shave although this series is also able to do via wet shave. I like the way the shave is so clean it hardly feels any stubbles after shaving. While my last previous Philips shaver also does the work, but I feel this 5000 series shaves much cleaner and goes right into the skin. Furthermore, with the dry shave, I do not feel the abrasion or any burnt feeling. The grip is great although it is larger than my expectation but overall happy with the size for home use although might feel it is quite large for travel use since it will take up half of the toiletries pouch but it is great for just home and daily use. I like the cleaning box which also coms with the cleaning solution, the cleaning box also act as a stand whenever I finish shaving, so it is really perfect. Shaver comes with a small bag to contain the shaver but as it is soft fabric bag it don’t seems to be able to protect the shaver while on traveling use but since it is used mostly for home, don’t really bother me but could potentially think of hard case cover in future. The battery life is also very good so it is perfect for a good 1 week trip with daily shave and will still last so omit the need to bring charger for trips. There is a hair trimmer although there is no intention to use it since I do not have overly grown beard. Cleaning case if could be charged or battery operated will also be great. Overall, very highly satisfied with the shave results and the usage of the product with ease.

Replaced Wet Shaving And No Regrets
25 May 2022

I am 71 years old and have been shaving since my early teens - my stubble is as old and stubborn as I am! From the outset I have been a wet shaver, although I have usually had an electric shaver as a back up. However, with the multi-blade options now approaching £5 each, I decided to revisit my shaving regime. I found the 5000 Wet&Dry on a very good deal so decided to take the plunge after reading many positive reviews. From the day it arrived some weeks ago it has been my only shaving device and I am very pleased with it. My stubble is tough but the Philips blades get through it without an issue. I have not used it with water or shave cream - it is used on my dry face like a traditional electric shaver. I have not used it with water or shave cream - it is used on my dry face like a traditional electric shaver. I am left with a shave that is close enough for my needs, and my skin appreciates the lack of trauma that can come with a wet shave. It takes as long as a wet shave - I go over the whole shaved area more than once, especially the stubborn neck hair area. The cleaning cassette seems to work, although I am not sure how I shall know when a change is due. In between, it is easy to open the shave head and, using the supplied brush, to get rid of the hair and sebum inside the head. Battery life seems pretty good. I am getting about two weeks per charge with a daily shave. How often I shall need to change the cutting heads is still unknown but even if it is annually I think this will work out less expensive than running a wet shave system. The supplied travel case seems good and robust. Overall, I am very happy with the 5000 series shaver.

Works well, and less irritating than razors.
16 December 2022

This Phillips Norelco 5400 shaver is nice. It has a good ergonomic form factor and gives a close shave without as much irritation as a razor. It does take multiple passes and several minutes to shave, so don't expect unrealistic magic, but I personally do prefer this vs manual razors. Additionally, I appreciate the wet & dry feature without fear of bringing into a wet environment. While it works if I haven't shaved in a while and the facial hair is starting to get a little longer, it works best if you keep up with things and don't let your hair grow too long. Finally, these electric shavers do occasionally leave a random unshaved longer hair that for whatever reason doesn't get cut, and I do keep a manual razor handy just for those occasional touch ups.
