This is my go-to pen, my everyday carry, and the pen I most frequently give to fountain pen newbies looking to get started. It's an inexpensive pen, but it's not cheaply made. There's loads of colours and a solid selection of nib widths, though most people will likely be comfortable with a fine nib for everyday writing. The converter that comes standard is easy to use, just squeeze and suck up ink through the nib, and it comes apart easily to clean. Plastic cartridges are also an option if you're not ready to dive into bottled ink or if you're travelling and don't want to transport ink on a plane. However, I'd really recommend people try bottled ink and embrace how environmentally friendly this way of writing is. Instead of throwing away disposable pens made of plastic, you can buy this pen and refill it endlessly. That's less waste and a better bang for your buck, since this pen will stand up to years of daily use. There's a world of fountain pen inks on Amazon for those getting started. You can't go wrong with Pilot's own inks, especially their Japanese line. The colours are beautiful and the pen writes effortlessly. Give an old-fashioned solution to the modern environmental crisis a try and enjoy it in the process. It's a bit of everyday elegance, and you stand out with a sharp pen amongst the endless sea of ballpoints.

I purchased a similar product to this, although the exact options I ended up with are not available on this site. The pen I bought is actually turquoise, brushed metal, and has a fine nib. It came in a cute plastic case with a transparent window lid, and the accessories included one cartridge of black ink and one “squeeze” style ink converter. Although I dislike “proprietary” converters and cartridges in pens, for 20 bucks, I thought it was nice they were included to get me started on usage of the pen. The cartridge itself felt secure when mounted, and the pen wrote flawlessly after allowing the ink from the cartridge to work its way to the nib. The nib itself is indeed a more “Japanese fine”, writing thinner than most Western fines, but it is still shockingly ... MoreI purchased a similar product to this, although the exact options I ended up with are not available on this site. This is an “energetic” pen, just fun and easy to write with, and I absolutely adore it. The only negative thing I can say is that the pen does not hold a ton of ink in its converters, and the Pilot cartridges are not available in any exciting ink colors, but I’m ok with this being either an every day “professional” pen where I only use black cartridges, or I can clean the cartridge when it is done with a blunt tip syringe and distilled water and then use my other inks at home. It’s not a dealbreaker in this case because I love the actual pen so much!

Fun reliable pen that performs like a more expensive that can be your everyday user and be very happy using it

The Pilot Metropolitan is a great value... if a new fountain pen user or an experienced user as an everyday pen, this pen is rock solid. Performs well in many conditions. Fun to use with multiple nib options and colors to choose. Great value as a very dependable pen at a very affordable price...the quality and reliability of the pen exceeds the cost in my opinion.

Great Pen (tad pricey)

Great intro Fountain Pen, really nice build quality and feel, better starting pen than the safari (maybe). One of the few pens that come with a bladder, makes filling up the ink so convenient.

Great looking pen for a great price!
13 May 2017

This pen has a classy look, being the gold it is. In a meeting room, people will take notice and ask you what the pen is. The nib is very fine. If you are writing with lower quality paper or just love a thin line, then this is the pen for you. If you like the Safari fine, then go for this one in the medium. I would probably go for the medium next time. Other than that, everything about it is great. the colour. size. weight. Can't go wrong with this one. It's become a classic so quickly for a good reason.

Lovely to write with
16 February 2019

This is my third Pilot metropolitan (F nib), I had some issues with the nib ink feed of the first couple. One the ink wouldn’t flow and the other had the complete opposite problem. However, I really like the metal body and weight of this pen, and the fact that you can post the lid. It’s a really quality-feeling pen, and is really affordable. So was happy to take my chances on purchasing a 3rd. So far so good, and I’m really happy with it. Inked with an Iroshizuku ink

Nice colors available !!!
2 September 2020

I have just been using this pen and it writes beautifully ! Would have given the 5 stars if the size of the barrel was closer to the size of the fingertip section. I got 2 others in the aqua and light green with the fine nibs. They write well but the medium is a bit nicer and doesn't lay down too much ink like some mediums can do. If these were the only pens I owned that would be just fine .

Really lovely pen, reasonable price
5 April 2017

I bought this pen recently and I really like it! Firstly, it looks really nice - I think it looks more expensive than it is. The gold finish has a lovely matt look. The pen has a good weight to it and balances well in the hand, with or without the cap on the end. I prefer a fine tip and this one is good, similar line weight to the Lamy fine nib. At first, it took a while to get the ink flowing (using the provided cartridge) and I thought it was a bit scratchy, but I'm not noticing that anymore. Comes in a nice case with one ink cartridge and an ink converter cartridge. I am very happy with this purchase!
