I did a lot of internet research as to the different fishfinder units available. Because I am only a hobby fisherman with a 14' fishing boat, I wanted a unit that marked the bottom condition, depth, and realistic fish symbols.I have a 20 year old Little Buddy that I had been using but could not use when I needed to open up my 15HP motor. This new unit allows me to find the fish and value to my boating experience.Sportsman Warehouse has always been my favorite sporting store-products are priced fairly and with a good selection available.

As i said, you can check the bottom and the depths but for marking fish it is inadequate, you can compare the demo with both the fish icon on and with it off and you wouldn't be able distinguish why it is marking the fish (with the fish icon on) . The icon's great for beginners but as someone with a bit of experience you want see the arcs, not an icon and the resolution is just not good enough to do that. Not sure why this unit has so many good reviews. It's just okay in my book. Barely has any features, it could least include the battery voltage. I bought it based on reviews and it looking similar to the lowrance elite 4 that I once had. Maybe it's good for the money but I would recommend saving up a bit more to get something more useful.

Doesn't work well in muddier, soft bottom lakes

I live in the MS delta. Lakes around here can be fairly muddy and they have soft bottoms. This doesn't do well in those conditions. Clear water with a harder bottom and it works fine. After two years it won't function in DI mode anymore. I've been told it's probably the transducer. Replacement costs nearly as much as entire unit. Will not purchase again.

Great fish/depth finder in this class!
14 October 2019

Exactly what we needed for our Four Winns bow rider! We prefer the down imaging (DI) feature with water depth and temp on the display since we do not fish. The screen is easy to read in sunlight, and the menu is user-friendly and simple to navigate. Installation instructions are detailed, and we did not need to do any adjustments of the transducer when we put it in the water.

Great product, good features
29 October 2019

Product was exactly as described. New and unopened. Product came in a plastic packaging and plastic was slightly damaged, but absolutely nothing that would cause any damage to the product or raise any concerns. Easy to install on my Kayak, and has worked flawlessly for multiple fishing trips. Product comes with screws to mount on a metal boat, so I had to change those out for bolts and nuts to mount on Kayak. For the transducer mount, it came with a bolt and lock nut to hold the transducer to the mounting bracket. I changed that out for a 2.5" stud with locking washers and wing nuts so I can raise and lower the transducer during transportation. Highly recommend doing this, especially if mounting on a Kayak. This fish finder does not have GPS or dual screen, but if you are like me and all you need is to know where the fish are, this is worth every penny. Great quality, great imaging. Will give you a sonar image as well as down imaging, but not both at the same time. If you are installing on a Kayak, the only other recommendation I have is to get a Nocqua Pro Power Kit 10Ah battery to power the fish finder.

Highly recommend it

I checked out YouTube to learn how to read the screen so I could locate fish and was able to operate the fish finder easily on my first trip out. Simple and effective. highly recommend it.

Perfect for my small boat
16 February 2022

I’ve had this unit for 2 years with 0 problems. I’ve got it set up with a Scotty transducer arm and have Velcro on the base so I can remove it after every trip and store it in my shed. It has both down imaging and basic sonar functions. I use both depending on the situation.

Use on my pond buster 10 ft plastic boat. Works well except the suction cup on the transponder will not, WILL NOT stay attached to the boat when moving..Very aggravating when you spend more time trying to keep it attached then you do fishingAlso the fabric carrying case is useless, it is to small for the carrier the fish finder fits into.. if you get the carrier into the fabric cover you can to get the battery into it also. And if you do you can not connect the battery to the fish finderTotally useless

Works well enough for me

I've taken this out on at least 20 fishing trips. Overall, I'm pretty happy with my purchase. It seems fairly accurate in determining the number and size of fish it marks on the screen. The down imaging feature is nice being able to see the structure you're over. Install was simple, except it doesn't include a 1 Amp inline fuse they suggest in the instructions, so that was disappointing. My biggest issue with this fish finder is that there's very little to no configuration ability for what's visible on the screen or where it's placed. You can view the depth and the water temperature and it's stuck to the top left corner, that's it. I really would liked to have been able to add the battery voltage to the main display. I would have given 5 stars but wasnt happy about the power cord. After installing per instructions noticed corrosion in the plug two days latter. Ended up installing a switch for it and replaced the power cord on my own dime because hummingbird wasnt very helpful when I emailed them.Other than that it performs very well nice screen for viewing and good picture. I have a small boat so its removed after every trip

The Humminbird Piranhamax 4 is a compact fishfinder ideal for in the boat, kayak and float tube. The fishfinder features a 4.3-inch LCD screen with 256 colours and it comes in the more expensive ‘Helix’ style. The fishfinder’s DualBeam sonar gives a good view of the underwater world, making it very easy to find the right spot. These fishfinders are easy to operate by the simple menu system, so very user-friendly for every angler. The DI (Down Imaging) is an extra frequency option, which gives you an even more detailed image. The difference between floating plants, fish or other objects is even better visible through this special frequency. A fun and very useful feature!
