Yesterday, I bought a bottle of this amazing rum. I enjoyed it when I tried it straight. Holy cow! I substituted this for Kraken in a Mai Tai. Change the game! For a side-by-side comparison, I even made a Mai Tai with Kraken, and there was no contest! Plantation is unquestionably the victor and will be a frequent purchase moving forward.

Even though I only seldom drink rum, I always buy Plantation rums. I made the decision to test it when I noticed this larger bottle at a fair price. Excellent for direct drinking as well as mixing.

We started buying this rum on the islands of Spanish Wells and Eleuthera in the Bahamas. We tried many dark rums in all price ranges. This one by far was our favorite. We use it to make Dark and Stormys. The flavors of the rum mixed with ginger beer and lime supersedes all other dark runs we have tried. We were so happy Total Wine carries this rum. We placed an online order with them for us to pick up when we returned to Florida.
I bought this rum after hearing about it. Although the perfume is great, I thought it had a strong alcohol attack. It has a passable flavor that isn't overpowering. I was looking for a spirit with more flavor. Until today, Ron Cartavio XO remains my favorite rum.
I have half a dozen others I prefer to sip, but as a go-to for cocktails or on the rocks with a splash of soda, Plantation Original Dark doesn't disappoint and it's very affordable. I like a bit of sweetness and don't find it to be a sugar-bomb as some others say, it's just slightly sweet. I prefer Doorly's XO but it's often unavailable so I make do. It's quite drinkable though not outstanding.

The smell of rotten bananas, which is characteristic of many Jamaican runs, slowly starts to come through. As it winds down, the rich fruit and caramel tastes start to mimic much darker dried fruits, similar to what I've tasted in a fine cognac. Once it starts to move through your body, there is a significant amount of burn, but it's really not that horrible. For a Mai Tai or Hot Buttered Rum drink, this dark rum is ideal. I should pair my cigars with a fine rum as I'm switching from bourbon. The fact that this blend has been double matured in two distinct barrels is impressive. That's definitely a positive in the world of bourbon. Especially at this price point, this drink is smooth, simple, and quite delicious. It also has a lovely bottle, label, and cork bottle. I heartily endorse it.
My go-to recipe for rum-based cocktails is this one. It is quite good, especially considering the price. It tastes wonderful in planters punch or a dark and stormy. If you're lacking in motivation, it even shines in a rum and coke. Excellent all around.
This rum is an amazing mixed, full of flavor and has a great variety of different rum styles all packed into one bottle. If you enjoy mixed rum drinks this is a must in my opinion. I find myself wanting to use it in everything, and the price point is perfect for that.
