I ordered intending to use black ink, which I am doing. I will try the pink one provided in the pen, but for everyday use will stick with the darker colors.Note: I do find the cartridges difficult to push on. I always feel I am going to bend something and a bit of color flashes into the nib compartment when it finally breaks the seal. I am 79 years old and have always used Cross cartridges and it may just b because different style and brand. Love the pens, both blue and pink but wonder if all your pen cartridges have the same silver ball that gets pushed into the cartridge.

I needed a pen that wouldn't break the bank or break my heart if it rolled off the desk and broke or "grew legs" and walked away. ;-) With that in mind, I bought a Preppy with F nib and one with EF since I was unsure which I would prefer. As soon as my Preppies arrived, I popped in the cartridges and took them for test writes. I was amazed! Both nibs write smoothly, better than I thought they would, even the EF. I plan to convert both to eyedropper pens. The Fine nib will be filled with Lexington Gray for all the meeting notes I take, and I'm thinking the Extra Fine will be filled with Lamy Ruby for invoice notations. I would buy Preppy pens again without hesitation.

I have recently discovered the Platinum Preppy after hearing Brian and Drew go on forever about how great a pen this is. Frankly, I didn't believe them. But lie, they did not! This is a fabulous pen!! The blue is pretty. The pen is surprisingly comfortable, and when capped, the ink won't dry out for a year. So it's great to put the Pigment Blue cartridge in and use it when I want to address and envelope. And this color doesn't just come in a fine nib, it comes in a medium, too!!! And the medium is smooth and flows well. I am so impressed with this pen, I have purchased a few more to give to fountain pen virgins who want to try one. The price of the pen and the ink can't be beat and your newbie friend won't find the pen dried out when they go to use it 6 months from ... My only regret is getting an EF nib instead of a F or even a Medium. The pen writes great most of the time in spite of not cleaning before my first use. But I'm using nano-pigmented waterproof ink in this (R&K SketchINK) and the nib does tend to dry out in spite of the spring loaded inner cap. It doesn't completely stop and is easily revived, either by a drawing a couple of lines inward, towards my hand, or if that fails, by very lightly dipping the nib into water and trying again. I've taken to storing this pen with the nib facing down and it's helped a lot. The only problem I've had with that is that it concentrates the blue ink, making it much darker. The darkness fades if I draw with it for an extended period and the ink returns to blue as the concentrated ink ... MoreMy only regret is getting an EF nib instead of a F or even a Medium. The darkness fades if I draw with it for an extended period and the ink returns to blue as the concentrated ink is cleared from the feed. With the same order, I also got a Fine nibbed Preppy Wa Special edition and have had zero problems with that one. It's been writing great out of the gate, in spite of not using it as often as the Preppy EF and also using a nano-pigmented waterproof ink in it (De Atramentis Document Ink). Now I just wish I had gotten this black Preppy in a Medium so that I can experience that, and also to have another denser line weight available for drawing. I'm sure I'll just order another one with my next purchase because my self-control isn't great. I got the EF because I'm already used to a Platinum extra fine nib from using their Desk Pens. But that pen also tended to clog because of how I use it, which was not often enough to maintain a consistent flow. For some reason I also thought the nibs were identical but they definitely aren't! The Desk Pen nib has a gold color, which I think means it's brass or has a brass finish. The Preppy nib is steel. The Desk Pen nib is also narrower at the shoulders. I had to switch from the Desk Pen because the cap seals with only a pressure fit and I found the section was almost always dirty from ink leaking or hitting the sides of the cap when I capped it. Thanks to Brian's videos, I know how to clean the Desk Pen out thoroughly now, but I think they are just going into storage or maybe a donation. In contrast, I love how Preppy the cap seals and posts. I found cleaning it a little confusing because I thought for sure that the fins would come out, but I still managed to get them pretty clean with a long soak and blowing air through it to remove excess water. All the other parts were very easy to clean. This has absolutely been a worthwhile purchase for me, especially considering the price.
I have been writing with fountain pens for over 60 years, and I own a handful of high-end pens with M nibs that are absolutely wonderful. This ridiculously inexpensive little Preppy with fine nib has blown me away and made me a believer in F nibs! I could buy additional expensive pens if I wanted to, but, honestly, as it is I keep my flagship Montblanc 146 and other lovelies cleaned and stored for special occasions. I have always been a bit of a tinkerer and gadget freak, and lately I find myself drawn to inexpensive pens I feel more comfortable playing with - taking them apart, swapping nibs. Turns out a lot of them are wonderful writers, too, like the little Platinum Preppy! Since I started writing with it a couple of days ago I am having trouble picking up any of the other pens at my side even though they are all great writers, too. I think I just still cannot believe a $7 pen, A SEVEN DOLLAR PEN, can write as well as it does. I keep waiting for the initial good impression to wear off and start feeling some scratch, and it is just not happening. I have the clear demo, but I like it so much I just ordered all of the colors so I can make different color combinations to amuse my grandchildren and let them play with them.Over the last few months I have been enjoying various TWSBIs, Lamys, and Kawecos, even a wonderfully bizarre Montenegro Tool (which, surprisingly, is a fantastic writer. I have had the Preppy for a while, but felt no urgency to try what I was sure would be a scratchy disappointment. I was so very wrong! It is wonderful!
I have been using this pen a lot for note taking in my institute and writing in general, with one pen alone doing most of my writing work, and occasionally my doodling work when procrastinating. My experience of fountain pens is relatively new, so I can't compare it with other pens that are beyond, cheaper or at the same price range (except for Zebra V301, which I didn't like for its scratchiness and the ink having trouble feeding. That's a whole different topic though.) Therefore, I'll cover this pen with my objective experience using it: First are foremost, it has a smooth, light body, and a round tip. The plastic is quite sturdy; I used to travel lots on the bus, biked a lot with it and sometimes it fell to the ground, and I did not experience the plastic ... The plastic is quite sturdy; I used to travel lots on the bus, biked a lot with it and sometimes it fell to the ground, and I did not experience the plastic cracking or any hindrances to the writing. Still best to keep this pen safe to avoid damage however, since the sturdiness can be unpredictable; I've witnessed other people getting their pens cracked. This pen also has a secure cap with a spring inside, which prevents the nib from leaking or drying. I had no leaking issues whatsoever with my model. It seems to be a trait of Platinum fountain pens that they create very secure caps which make these pens tolerant, and that is great. As for the writing, it often writes without hiccups and without the need to be pressing hard on the pen - or pressing on the paper at all for that matter, the great and positive difference that I felt when transitioning from ballpoint and gel pens to fountain pens for the first time. It has a faint scratch to it when you write with it, but it's very minimal, and ultimately Preppy manages to write reasonably smoothly and comfortably for long periods of time (unlike Zebra V301 which is way too scratchy.) The grip of the pen is also plastic, and the pen is comfortable to hold whenever the cap is attached to the back or not. Preppy comes with its own ink cartridge, and so far I've only been writing with these cartridges in black and ink colours; I plan to try different inks, like Sheaffer Black, the proprietary cartridges are very reliable. The ink capacity is decent on them, and a converter is not necessary to use it. If you don't want to get new cartridges, you can clean out your existing one (cleaning both the cartridges and the pen is easy,) and dip the ink inside that cartridge using a pen syringe or something similar, or convert it into an eyedropper pen, which I haven't tried. In conclusion, Platinum Preppy is a solid fountain pen. It's good for beginners in that it is easy to handle, clean, refill, and the transparency is convenient for keeping track of your ink and quality of the pen, overall making Preppy very approachable. No clue how to judge its strengths for intermediate or expert usage, with considering how sturdy it is I imagine its uses to be reliable and convenient for just about anyone.
I bought this pen with the converter as a backup for my everyday pen, and to use up some old ink that I have doubts about. It's working very well. The medium nib is slightly less broad than my usual preference, but it's broader than I was expecting, so it's satisfactory. I was surprised at the amount of ink in the section after I filled it, but the pen has black accents and the ink is black, so it's not a problem. For such a low-cost pen, the nib is remarkably smooth. I was expecting it to be scratchy like other very inexpensive pens I've had, but it's not at all. My ideal pen has an internal piston-filling mechanism for large ink capacity, but other than that, this pen is so good that it could easily be the main or the only pen rather than the backup pen.
I have used this pen for 2ish years now. I bought one after losing my favorite TWSBI and wanted to try some more affordable options. This pen is by far my favorite out of any entry level pen. I keep it filled with Noodler's Baystate Blue straight into the barrel with the o ring. I rinse every time I refill, and do a deep clean every so often. I've put it through hell carrying it around, traveling with it, dropping it, etc. At one point, I dropped it straight on the nib bending it to a 90 degree angle. Before buying another nib, I used jewelry pliers to bend it back. Shockingly, it still flows smoothly and I never replaced it. At some point, the cap cracked. I have it tightly wrapped with packing tape and it has held on for months like that, however I am recently ... MoreI have used this pen for 2ish years now. I'm considering trying a kaweco or beginner sailor, but I'm nervous that I will miss my $7 platinum preppy after spending more money. Anyways, great pen for gremlins like myself (and will probably last longer for anyone who treats their pen with decency). hope this helps!
