Seems to be well built. The top has been leak free, so far. I love the lager hose diameter and the valve. Much easier to take a big swig when exerting, and you won’t lose your water If you accidentally set your pack down on the bite valve. This continues what I’ve always valued about platypus bladders: low-toxic and taste free polyethylene, rather than the various vinyl formulations used in so many other brands.

In general I am happy with the bladder, no leaks and tasted good from the start so quite happy.Main bad point is the centre baffle has come apart at the bend so it fills like one big balloon. I should have returned it at the time but I thought it was a feature and I could re attach it whenever I wanted to, but now that I want to I've discovered it doesn't re attach. I'm sure I remember something about expanding it for more volume, but can't find anything on it now, and now it takes up to much room in my new bag so it's a bit useless.I like it apart from that tho but can't rate higher as can't use ot.I only use water in it so cleaning easy

I have used platypus reservoirs for years, as they seem to perform far better than other brands with daily use in tough conditions. This new design, however has a major flaw as the water tube easily detaches from the reservoir when you slide it into your pack, or as you are going about your day. The connection point is low and the tube is pushed up by resistance against your pack as you drop it into place. That means that sometimes it works as intended, but other times you pick up your pack, far from home, and your THREE LITERS of water are all dumped into the bottom of your bag. No one packs around 3L of water if they don't need it, which makes this flaw downright dangerous. Pro:Good flow, good capacity. Didn't leak. Bite valve works great.Con:I found that the handle (blue ) pulled away from the reservoir (clear) when inside the pack (Deuter Speed Lite 30) and full. This happened if the handle was attached to the pack's reservoir holder (velcro support/hang tab) that keeps it in place. Doesn't happen if the reservoir is only partially (about little over half) full. Did not leak though.
Here's what I do like - it is wider & not as tall as my other hydration reservoirs so it fits better in my small climbing backpack; the zip top seems secure and didn't leak; the bite valve has great flow; the stem of the hose leaving the reservoir is attached vertically up the length of the reservoir which keeps it from getting strained, twisted, or pinched at the insertion point and keeps the hose going in the right direction. Here's what I thought could use improvement - the attachment clip is difficult to get the hose in & out of (I prefer the ones that have a magnet attachment as they are easier to manipulate while doing any activity); the on/off switch at the bite valve is difficult for me to maneuver while being active (I personally prefer the ones that are ... MoreHere's what I do like - it is wider & not as tall as my other hydration reservoirs so it fits better in my small climbing backpack; the zip top seems secure and didn't leak; the bite valve has great flow; the stem of the hose leaving the reservoir is attached vertically up the length of the reservoir which keeps it from getting strained, twisted, or pinched at the insertion point and keeps the hose going in the right direction. Here's what I thought could use improvement - the attachment clip is difficult to get the hose in & out of (I prefer the ones that have a magnet attachment as they are easier to manipulate while doing any activity); the on/off switch at the bite valve is difficult for me to maneuver while being active (I personally prefer the ones that are lower profile and twist, like on the Osprey), but I'm getting used to it.All in all a good design, just could use a couple tweaks to make it great.
The replacement tube has been the absolute worst... The tube material is way too soft and it kinks constantly!Things that have made it kink:-Being in a full pack and having some pressure against the bladder.-Making a turn from the top of my pack to the hose hole.-Making a turn from where it exits my pack to the shoulder strap clip.I just finished a 3 week hiking trip, and I had to stop and open up my bag to delicately re-arrange the hose repeatedly and just hope that it wouldn't kink again. It was incredibly frustrating! I was already frustrated by the price of the replacement hose, and honestly this experience has destroyed any and all trust I had left in Platypus products. I was already frustrated by the price of the replacement hose, and honestly this experience has destroyed any and all trust I had left in Platypus products. Not sure why they changed the hose material but it was a very bad idea. The reason I replaced the hose in the first place was because the lever on the mouthpiece of my original one broke right away. That was some years ago, and I had been using the mouthpiece from some off brand bladder for years since I had to replace it in a pinch and couldn't get a replacement mouthpiece or hose in store anywhere. I was lucky that some off brand uses the same irregular hose size. It was incredibly inconvenient that I couldn't just grab a new mouthpiece from REI.I hope this product team gets their act together someday, but honestly I'm not going to waste my money any more to find out.
I bought one of these on the 18th of June for my son to use on his Duke of Edinburgh bronze expedition. I've had Platypus products before so I know they are good quality. However I'm disappointed with this one. The reservoir and the tubing are very good and there really is no bad taste. but the shut-off valve is a poor design. My son was out in the wild for less than two days and the shut-off valve fell out of the tube and was lost. It's easy to see how it would fall out as it only has one ridge on the bayonet that goes into the tube; all the other fittings have two or three ridges and they seem to be wider so they will 'dig in' more to the side of the tube. In terms of design this has to be either an oversight or a petty attempt at cost-saving. In terms of design this has to be either an oversight or a petty attempt at cost-saving. It's a shame, because now I either risk buying a Platypus valve that might get lost, or try one from a random factory in China that has three ridges, but might not be food safe.
I bought this because I wanted a hydration bag that was compatible with my new backpack and one that had a higher capacity than 2 liter. I checked it, and it fits perfectly. My old MARPAT backpack wasn't anywhere near big enough for what I needed and it wasn't hydration compatible. My new backpack is. Now this isn't designed for putting on your back like the one that came with the MARPAT backpack. It's designed for putting inside a hydration compatible backpack. That's where it's usefulness is best. It's a specialty item.
Weak plastic! The mouthpiece lever broke right away. When I got a replacement hose, they had changed materials I guess, and the hose was way too soft and CONSTANTLY kinked. I had to open up my bag, dig stuff out, gingerly rearrange the hose and then hope it didn't rekink MULTIPLE TIMES per hiking day. Even just having a full pack with a bit of pressure against the back of the bladder was enough to kink the hose down at the base.ALSO they use a non-standard hose size, so you can't even buy the CamelBack, Osprey, or off brand mouthpieces and hoses. It's near impossible to find replacement parts for the Platypus hose/mouthpiece in person. The ones they sell through their website are crazy pricey. ($30 just for the hose.)Just stick to CamelBack. I have a Platypus biking backpack with hooks to hold up a water bladder. I assumed this bladder was meant to hang by the zipper clamp, but it falls off the clamp and bunches up at the bottom of the bag making it impossible to suck water out after a while. It happens with hiking as well, so it isn't that it's only happening under bigger shock loads. This happening also means the zipper isn't clamped and could more easily unzip in my backpack. Pretty disappointed in this thing.
