Hi. We used this for 3 hikers to fill up our camel backs. This was super nice to have this volume. However, if I were treating it myself, I'd buy the 4L. It worked very well. Occasionally, I have to raise the dirty water bag much higher to start the cleaning process. I learned that when I noticed the cleaned bag was empty. Preparing to store this away was a bit of a pain after my trip. The cleaning part wasn't the problem. It was the drying of the "CLEAN" water that was dissappointing. I had to let it sit out for a week to ensure all the water dried out of the clean reservoir, because the only access to the inside is through its little 1" diameter fill/drain port. Overall, I was satisfied, I was a bit dissappointed on the drying aspect of the clean reservoir though.

I have had this system for two years. I have used it on 4 trips. It is fantastic! It filters 4.0L very quickly (+/- 5 min). The water tastes great... MUCH better than using tablets. They’re are two issues I have found. 1. the “ziplock” feature on the ‘dirty’ bag. It is a real challenge to zip the bag by simply pressing the zip together. If they upgraded the design to have an actual zip like mechanism on the bag (like the new and improved zip-lock bags), the issue would be no more... easy , easy collection of dirty water and sealing of bag for optimal use. 2. The cap for the clean water bag should have a valve spout, which would facilitate the pouring of clean water without spillage. It does not suck. What I mean is take when I carry either 1 or 2 or 3 liters of water the water would not draw through the tubing. It would draw like you are sucking an empty water bladder, nothing but air. I spent 3 days on the Colorado trail and it did not matter how much water I carried or how I positioned the screw outlet to the left or right, on the side of the outlet or wrap the tube under the outlet when I placed the bladder in the pocket of the bladder holder and then pack my pack, the water would not draw or suck. I tried to make sure the tubing was not and wouldn’t be kinked but often time it ended kinked. When the bladder was out of the pack then it would draw or suck and it would flow to fill up my water bottles, which I am very glad I brought. Unless ... MoreIt does not suck. Finally, just this last trip it ceased to work at all (thankfully I always carry a backup filter). Once I got home, I tried every recommended filter cleaning procedure to no avail. It still will not filter, even though the filter is still within its expected life of use. A replacement filter is $65. Compare that cost to any Sawyer Mini/Squeeze, Katadyn BeFree, or Hydroblu Versa filter which come in from $20-35 and offer similar or better filtering. All of these competitors can also be rigged as a gravity system using CNOC bags. There is literally no reason at all for the Platy filter to cost 2-3 times as much as these competitors. I have not had any issues with these other filters clogging even though I didn't treat them as well as I did the gravityworks filter. Further, the zipper on the dirty water bag can be frustrating to use, especially in cold temps or after collecting very cold water. TLDR: The filter is extremely expensive for no reason. I would highly recommend the CNOC bags and a Sawyer Squeeze or HydroBlu Versa for gravity filtering. It is cheaper,the filters have longer life, and I think the bags are easier to use. If you like the hoses on this system, those can also be purchased separately at low cost and intergrated into any gravity system.

The dirty bag zip closure can feel a little tough to close, but it’s actually fairly easy to close. It doesn’t always give you that satisfying “click in” feeling letting you know the seal is solid, but it will actually close with a tight seal. No force or anger needed. I can only speak for myself here, but out of six years of strong use and one filter replacement later, I’ve never had it fail or be too difficult to close. That’s with turbid, high mineral content water source. Because of where I’m often in the backcountry at, the “tea water” appearance has slightly stained the entire system. But barely on the clean side of things. This has not effected the taste, filtration, or safeness of drinking water. Think of it as hard water being treated by a softener, you’ll still get a slight staining after it’s been through the entire cycle. All n all, I recommend this filter of you want plenty of water for a group or solo. It’s light but not the lightest. It’s easy to use and has very few complications. Clean water bag doubles as a bladder or click in with your own. Works even when the two bags are slight angle versus having to be suspended. Pours directly into cooking pot or bottle mess and hassle free. Comes from a place that actually tests their equipment before going onto the shelves. Fast. Clear indications of dirty/clean
This is a great product and I've used it for years without any issues - hundreds of litres of clean water canoe tripping including some pretty murky brown water. Started using it after being swarmed by mosquitoes while stuck with one of the classic hand pump filters by the river and thought to myself "there must be a better way than this..." There is! Tips: Make sure you back-flush regularly to keep the filter running smoothly. Keep a bit of clean water on the "clean" side when starting a new batch so that you can back-flow into the "dirty" side to get a vacuum going (otherwise you may wait a long time). Go *very* light on the bleach when cleaning the filter, otherwise you'll be running several bags of water through it get rid of the taste.

After much research and upon multiple recommendations from other hikers, I settled on the Gravityworks filter. After purchasing one I recently took it with me on a two night excursion up the Tikwalus Heritage Trail in BC’s Fraser Canyon and it came in handy: the only water source at the campsite was a standing, motionless pond. I’m very happy with the product and would recommend it to others looking to purchase a water filter. It’s a welcome new addition to my kit.

One year later brought out the system and took it on the same trip, the smallest trickle of water was coming through, we tried everything to try and get it to work and even had the manual with us! After an hour of fussing with it, we took out the filter and plugged a Sawyer Mini filter into the system that we had for backup and emergencies, and we had water at a fast rate. It really put a damper to the trip having to troubleshoot the thing in 95°F weather. I am not happy that the filter only worked for the one time, ...
