Great Idea, poor quality

I purchased one of these to swap from a pack bladder for winter walks / hikes. I liked the idea, the price was right and I saw it in a gear review. When I recieved it, somone at the factory put the cap on wrong causing a crease in the cap joint causing a leak. I fixed this and was happy with it until after only 2 or 3 times out the product failed in the bottom crease.I would look at something with better "softer" materials for the bag and better plastic for the cap.

Great when new, but tends to degrade over time or with repeated trips through airport security.

I like bringing a couple of empty Platy soft bottles in my carry-on bag through airport security checkpoints, and then filling them at a drinking fountain afterwards. This works absolutely great with a brand new bottle. However, after a few airline trips, the plastic is noticeably stiffer and less flexible, and creases start forming in the center of the folded bottom panel. The inner surfaces also seem to become less hydrophobic, with water beading up more and the bottle taking longer and longer to fully dry out. I noticed this pattern from a habit of carrying 2 soft bottles of different ages whenever I travel for the past few years, repeatedly replacing the oldest bottle before the creases leak, and then watching as the next oldest bottle gets more and more stiff ... MoreI like bringing a couple of empty Platy soft bottles in my carry-on bag through airport security checkpoints, and then filling them at a drinking fountain afterwards. On average, I'd say I'm flying with my soft bottles about 2-4 times a year, with light to moderate weekend use during the rest of the year. Under these conditions, a single soft bottle lasts about 12-18 months before it looks like it could easily spring a leak from one of the creases on the bottom panel.

Lightest weight bottle out there

The SoftBottle has the lowest weight of materials to water capacity ratio of any bottle or reservoir that I can find. Despite being so lightweight, it is still very tough. At first I was timid when using it, thinking it was fragile. But after several months of usage, I’ve not had any issues and I’ve stopped coddling it.My only wish for this bottle would be a wider mouth. It is sometimes hard to get the contents of some of the larger drink packets in to it. However, that would probably up the weight. I would choose the lower weight over a wider mouth any day as it is still possible to use a makeshift funnel when I come across those larger drink packets.

Perfection
9 January 2023

Lighter than air. Rolls up to take up zero space when in transit. Fills easily. Seals perfectly. Solid construction. This was my 1st Platypus bottle, but certainly not my last! Combined with the BeFree as a dirt bottle / filter, you're talking about a few grams, NOT ounces when empty. Awesome product.

Product Quality Fading, or 1-time Lemon?
5 October 2022

This review is for my most recent experience with the product, as I'm not sure if manufacturing has changed over the years:7 years ago I used one Platypus bag for 6 months on the Appalachian Trail with no issues. While friends were using Sawyer Squeeze bags that were busting left and right, mine successfully survived 200+ days of usage (used with Sawyer Squeeze Mini filter) with no leaks.6 months ago I purchased a new Platypus to replace my years-old retired ones. I used the new bag for a total of 12 days and it got a hole at the seam near the top while filtering, rendering it useless. I was surprised and disappointed. I'm not sure if product quality has gone down since 2015 or if the one I bought was a lemon. I'm not sure if product quality has gone down since 2015 or if the one I bought was a lemon. I used the regular-sized Sawyer Squeeze filter on this bag, and while the flow required a lot of pressure on the bag to filter, it couldn't have been more than my constantly-clogged Sawyer Mini had applied to my 2015 Platypus bag over months and months. As the end-user, be prepared to carry a backup Platy bag in case one busts so you can still filter water and finish your trip safely. REI stood behind their return policy though (forget if that's members-only), so I was able to return it hassle-free! Overall I'd still recommend this product since maybe this was a one-off, and they're the most convenient way to carry water in my opinion.

Solid, reliable, perfect for backpacking.
26 July 2023

I have used these platy water containers for years. they last a long time, and are very dependable. I love how they collapse down to a small space, are light and take up no room in your backpack. I keep them on hand, for the days end of backpacking, when I fill them up with water for the dinner meal. I know there are other options out there, but for me, they are simple and reliable- just what I want in the backcountry.

Sturdy, pack-down water bottle for short trips
20 August 2023

I use mine for day trips and it fits in my Nathan running backpack. Lightweight, easy to drink, easy to clean, stores compact as it empties (love that!). Thankfully if the cap gets lost (and it can, it's not secured to the bottle) it can be replaced with most 2L bottle caps.If I could wave a wand and make it better: wish it was easier to carry hands-free, and (maybe this exists??) a compatible hydration tube so I could use this on long runs.

The best for good tasting water.
7 December 2022

No bad taste with Platypus water bottles - the water just tastes like water! They are incredibly light weight and fold up easily. I discovered Platypus bottles 20 years ago and still prefer them when I don't need a rigid water bottle. I wish they still made a half liter version to take when I travel, but the liter bottle can be partially filled and doesn't weigh much more or take much more space when partly full. 2 liter bottles are great for storing filtered water in camp.

Two things you should know...
6 September 2019

Been using these bottles for years and they are great! I even take my .5L one alpine climbing objectives strapped to my harness in a small stuff sack... lighter and way less bulky than even a small Nalgene. Two things that I've learned over time that others might find useful... 1. The weak point in the SoftBottle is where the hard plastic edge of the bottle top meets the soft plastic bottle, at it's widest and lowest point in the middle where it gets the most hard angle flexing and abrasion. I've had my .5L for more years than I can remember and only this year did it finally spring the micro-est of leaks at that point... it was so small it actually took me awhile to figure out where exactly it was leaking from. A bit of clear tenacious tape over the top and I expect ... MoreBeen using these bottles for years and they are great! A bit of clear tenacious tape over the top and I expect it to continue to serve me well for years to come. 2. I accidentally left a 1L and 2L SoftBottle 90% full of water in our freezer over a long weekend... was prepping a cooler for a road trip and I was short of time to make 3/4 filled ice bottles so I figured some cold water mass would be better than nothing. I fully expected the SoftBottles to have bursted and made a mess in the freezer, but to my surprise they survived fully frozen up to the brim. I'm guessing the material has enough give/flex in it that the expanding ice did not burst the seams of the bottle. Was so stoked they survived since I had just gotten them a few months earlier. I definitely don't recommend doing this on purpose, but the inadvertent test showed me even more how burly these SoftBottles are!

Won't work with Sawyer
6 October 2022

I bought this bottle to use with my Sawyer filter. The Sawyer filter is made to be able to screw onto a regular plastic bottle. This soft bottle has the regular size bottle opening but the threads are different. I tried my Sawyer filter on this bottle. The filter won't screw on tight and the water leaks between the bottle and the filter. It defies logic that Platypus made this bottle with different size threads. There should be an obvious warning about this on the web page. This bottle is useless to me and it's not even worth it for me to send it back.
