If your camera game isn’t strong you may not enjoy this camera to its fullest extent. For the camera itself, I love the retro look, it is a statement piece in and of itself. It’s not the camera you are going to have on you all the time, it’s the camera that you are going to take capture certain fun pictures that you can throw on the Christmas tree or hang around the camper to have that homey feeling as the picture definitely have that retro look to them (a little darker and not sharp defined lines). The Bluetooth functionality is an added benefit as you can set a timer or just take the picture with your phone if you are trying to get a family portrait. It even has a self-portrait mode that will direct you to be a certain distance from the camera. It doesn’t provide an actual picture of what you are seeing. There also the ability to mess with the aperture from f11-f64, which may be helpful for those with really strong camera game. It charges via micro USB which is a tad annoying but survivable, the battery lasts for quite a while though (I haven’t had to recharge it). Overall, the quality of the pictures are lacking, it may have something to do with the user but overall the lines won’t be as sharp, the low light ability just isn’t great, and the overall quality of the pictures aren’t amazing. However, they do have that cool old school look to them. I love the camera but it won’t be my go to just take pictures… It will be the one that I grab for that special picture that I want to hang up immediately.

MODES, FEATURES & POLAROID ORIGINALS APP As a point and shoot, the Polaroid Now + is fun to use and some modes are easier to use than others. Self-timer and Double Exposure are easy to access and are available in-camera while additional modes are available in the Polaroid Originals mobile app. - LIGHT PAINTING The app offers many features but I did run into some connectivity issues as well as not being able to take full advantage of Light Painting mode. I was unable to use Light Painting mode as the shutter would not stay open like the app said it would. I ended up wasting 3 films attempting this mode which is a shame because that’s almost half a pack. - DOUBLE EXPOSURE I had better luck using Double Exposure indoors than I did in outdoor sunny conditions. I found that this mode lets a lot of light in; kind of obvious since it’s exposing twice, but definitely something to consider when playing around. AUTO FOCUS & EXPOSURE The camera will automatically choose between the 2-zone auto focus. The recommendation is at least 1.8 ft distance from the subject, but I found even that’s too close and may focus on the background instead of the subject like it did for me. I ended up getting a couple of over exposed shots even though I did not change the exposure in-camera. I did hold down the flash button to check out how to use the in-camera exposure settings but I left it in the middle and somehow got overexposed pictures outdoors even though the previous day I got well exposed images in the same amount of sunlight. The app will allow you to tinker with the exposure way more than the camera itself. LENS FILTERS The colored filters are neat. They give off a heavy tint and still leave some original colorings of the scene. The orange and yellow are light enough that they don’t affect the overall brightness of the photo. The blue filter is visibly darker so I don’t suggest it for low light or anything that’s even slightly back-lit. The red vignette filter is probably my favorite; it looks really cool in my opinion. Haven’t been able to use the light-burst filter to its fullest potential but it did give my photos an even more hazy look.

The Polaroid Now+ is yet another extension of the groundbreaking Polaroid camera for creators. The “+” part mainly offers a BTLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) connection with an app on your phone. This type of connection doesn’t require pairing so it’s fast and easy to use. The app enables a lot of cool creative tools like a remote shutter, full manual controls, double-exposure and light painting that basically is a really long exposure so you can “draw” with the light from your phone (or a flashlight, etc.). The is a nice addition, but you can also do a lot without it. There are only four buttons on the actual camera but they allow you to do a lot of stuff fairly easily. The shutter and power buttons basically do what you’d expect of them. The Flash button doubles not only to turn the flash off for the next photo or until the next power cycle but can also temporarily adjust the camera’s exposure to “more”, “normal” or “less.” This model now has a “+” button on the front which is used to set a self-timer, start a double exposure mode or do whatever favorite mode you assigned from the app. You can also hold that “+” button while turning the camera on to get a more detailed battery level reading on the single-digit display. Being used to instant digital photography, most of my first 8 photos did not come out well. Polaroids really love light and a steady hand. For me, getting used to analog instant photography has been a steep learning curve but one that I’m sure will pay off with creative results that are not easy to match with a now-ubiquitous digital camera. I really enjoy the classic styling of this camera and enjoy the colorful stripes on the front. The eyepiece is rubberized for comfort and the provided shoulder straps are easily removable if you need to do so. There’s a tripod mount on the bottom for steadier shots and the supplied creative lenses add some flair to your photos; although they are a tad cumbersome to store in the provided canvas roll which does not have a way to clip it to anything. I especially liked the effects of the Starburst filter but the others have uses as well. If you’re used to Polaroid photography and are looking for more tools to express your creativity, this camera will not let you down. If you’re new to analog instant photography, you might want to buy a few extra packs of film to go with your camera so you can experiment and get used to the differences of shooting analog. Either way, you won’t be disappointed in this medium where each photo is a unique one-of-a-kind.

Just one thing to do is to charge the device before configuring and first use. I did that just in case. Then I proceeded to setup the phone App. It was nice to control some of the settings from the phone App, no need to add any LCD display for that on the camera itself. Then I loaded the cartridge with the film, and I was ready to shoot. >> First use On my first use, I decided to try the device indoors, and not touch any setting, as I thought the “default” mode/settings would be enough to take good quality pictures. The ambient had 40W yellow lights and I placed the target about 4-5 feet away from the camera against a somehow dark background. The first pictures came out too dark and disappointing. Something similar happened when taking pictures outdoors. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the days have been cloudy but still looked “bright” enough, but not bright enough to get clear enough pictures. As a result, it was a disappointing experience. I reached out to Polaroid, and I was given some suggestions on how to better take better looking pictures (see below). >> Taking pictures indoors It is recommended to take photos indoors always with flash. I tried the low light exposure indoors, and the result was an almost black picture, so definitely, as it was recommended to me by Polaroid, use flash with a wall behind to bounce back the flash to the camera and place the target about 3-4 feet away. By doing that I was able to get better looking pictures. Changing the exposure/aperture is another thing you can do to get clearer pictures. You can do that using the phone App, but you can also do it from the device itself. The latter is something I didn’t know and that I couldn’t find mentioned in the booklet that comes with the device. The trick is to press and hold the flash button on the camera, next a horizontal line will appear where the LED counter for the number of pictures left on the device is located, the line in the middle is for “normal” settings, but pressing the flash button again, it will move, and you can choose to have brighter photos (line up) or darker ones (line down). So far, I don’t want to take many risks and I have been keeping the line to the top (brighter) when taking photos. >> Taking pictures outdoors As I already mentioned, I took pictures during cloudy days, and the results were just bad. For outdoors, it looks like you just want to have very clear skies and better sunny days in order to get nice pictures. I’d expect to use the color filters when things get sunny in Seattle (at this point, next Spring/Summer). >> Having fun Yeah, you can have the fun of your life with the device, but with the caveat that you could end up with pictures not looking the best (or perhaps that is what you want). I am not sure I would want to recommend this device, or any other instant camera to a friend, though. But if you decide to buy one, I’d think this polaroid is a fine device for instant photo taking.

Being able to adjust exposure levels through the app is great for more advanced shooters. I never thought of using a polaroid camera for light painting but if you want to drag the shutter and get some cool effects with light, you can do so. That said, you are using very expensive film packs so be sure you calculate your scene accordingly before you shoot. The same goes for the included lens filters. Be sure to visualize your shot (and your exposure if shooting manual) before you shoot. Searching for “Polaroid Now Plus Filters” should show you what kind of results you can get using the filters so you know what you are getting into before you put one on the lens. Setup was also a breeze out of the box and after app install/pairing, I was shooting within minutes. The build quality seems pretty solid but still feels plasticy so I recommend using the included strap around your neck as I am not sure it would survive much of a fall. For the time being and near future, USB-C should be standard, but this still uses USB-B (Micro). The cable is provided but I would like to see more manufacturers adopt USB-C so there are less cables in the trash. Film is absolutely expensive and plays into the printer way of thinking… Once you purchase the camera for a moderate price, you are stuck paying a small fortune to keep using it. While the experience of using a Polaroid camera is fun, the price you pay to feed it with film needs to be mentioned. In a digital world, make sure you slow down your shooting process to a snail's pace. Literally think out your shots before pressing the shutter. If you are shooting people, be sure they are absolutely ready and posed correctly, tell them to keep their eyes open, then press the shutter button when you feel it is the perfect moment. You get eight frames per film pack so shoot like you mean it. Lastly, I also highly recommend a photo album to keep your film safe rather than stacking them up like the old days. PROS: App features make it very versatile and creative Film color science is better these days The flash is FAR superior to the old units Styling is on point Standard tripod socket! Fun and easy to use CONS: Final image quality is pretty basic and still like the vintage units Takes a while to develop so be patient Film is EXPENSIVE

The Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera has a built-in flash which can be set to off or automatic with a push of the button on the back of the camera instead of a flash cube or pull up flash unit. The i-Type film packs are the same size as the older Polaroid film packs and are inserted into the camera the same way. After taking a picture, the photo comes out covered by a plastic film. When the film is lifted up, the picture pops out. For best development the photo should be placed upside down for a few minutes to keep light from disrupting it from developing properly. The Polaroid Now+ Camera can also be managed through a cell phone app. The Polaroid app can mange the Now+ Camera, Polaroid Lab and Polaroid OneStep+ on the Home Page. There’s also a tab for My Photo Album and Polaroid Photo Scanner. The app’s Now+ tab has several functions that are linked to the Camera: Remote, Self-timer, Double Exposure, Aperture, Tripod, Portrait, Light Paining (tap the flashlight button to add extra lighting to a subject), and Manual. The Manual option allows the user to set aperture and shutter speed for photos. The app can be downloaded from Google Play or Apple App Store and is free to use. For instant pictures and ease of use, The Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera is an excellent choice. In conjunction with the Polaroid app, The Polaroid Now+ has more functions and special effects options than its predecessors. The Now+ can also be attached to a tripod. The one major drawback of the Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera is that the battery in the camera doesn’t seem to be removable. Maybe with the next generation of Polaroid Instant Cameras, rechargeable batteries will be able to be changed when the charge runs out. This way, the user can use one battery and when that runs out, can replace it with a fully charged one. I do recommend the Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera for those people that like Instant cameras with a bonus of several other functions.
I was really excited to try this Polaroid Now+ camera because I thought Polaroid cameras were just the coolest thing back in the 90's. I must say after my initial use, I am a bit disappointed. The camera has a similar feel to what they were like in the 90's but a bit more compressed in size, with a more modern body. I thought the lens filter kit was a cool add-on feature, but after trying each of them out, I would not recommend using them. The camera itself still takes the same quality level of photos as it did in the 90's --thus no filter needed for a vintage effect. Also, most of the lenses made the photos too discolored to make out the image very well. (I tried them in both indoor and outdoor lighting.) The empty canister is still a bit of a wasteful item too - not recyclable. Using the camera in a very selective manner is best, as it was back in the day as well. The app is a nice modern add-on feature, especially if using it to remotely take photos. I had a bit of trouble getting the camera to connect initially, but after a few tries it did and then it worked without any problems. My main annoyance with the app is that it can sense whether you have good lighting for a photo, but it doesn't show you the active image on the app. This would help tremendously with testing the app features and figuring out how the lenses look for photos without wasting film, and seems like something that could have been easily included but wasn't. Overall, I did have fun testing out this camera and it did bring back some fun childhood memories. Yet, with the cost of film packs still being pricey, it's hard to justify using this camera on a frequent basis. Definitely a fun gift or purchase for a camera enthusiast or amateur photographer / artist.

If it's darker environment I can just make the flash setting higher or I can easily make it lower or turn it off in a bright setting. People who are more familiar with camera settings or work with cameras professionally will love manual mode. Manual mode allows you to change the aperture and shutter settings for a more captivating photo! Overall, this camera is great for anyone wanting a "point and shot" right out if the box, with good quality picture and willing to have great polaroid collection or at least physical pictures, which is something missing nowadays, so this camera is definitely worth the investment.

Especially since the film is pretty expensive, around almost $2 apiece which you'd really have to make sure that those photos count. or wind up with a super dark photo (the first one I took), or not capturing the right frame. Perhaps something they'll explore in the future (?). I'm excited to see where Polaroid decides to take this technology next. Overall, I'm really loving it and can't wait to take holiday photos with it!

I am, however, going to jump immediately into my only grip with the Polaroid Now+...consistent quality. One photo to the next you are going to achieve very different results even though no variables seem to change. You can adjust nothing on the camera while also not allowing much time in your environment to go by which would account for lighting or subject alterations, yet you will have one photo turn out amazing and the next 3 or 4 not turn out at all. As in, they might be blurry, poor lighting, or simply BLACK. But, I'm pretty sure that's how polaroid's worked back in the day when they were all the rage, so maybe it's a ... Or merely the appearance of one with all the perks of modern technology? Possibly with some more time messing with the settings (and throwing more money at film to test said settings) you can really nail down what needs to be done and when, but you are certainly going to burn through some film, which is not cheap. Aside from that, it is a great little device when it does work. Our daughter loves not just the look of it, but the analog process of it all as she has commented numerous times about how refreshing it is to not just have a photo of her friends, but to actually HAVE a photo (right then and there) of her and her friends to put on the wall or hand to someone. That right there is what this is really all about, so if you can tolerate the cost of film and the trial/error of getting a "good" photo I think you will really enjoy/appreciate the Polaroid Now+. Just don't expect stellar results each and every time you snap a shot. I'm still giving it the recommendation because it is a fun device and a great bit of quality for what it is, it doesn't feel cheap or look bad at all. You can leave it out as a bookend or conversation piece when not being used, it doesn't have to go into hiding and get forgotten about. I realize that is a very superficial use, but it is definitely something Polaroid took into consideration when designing it, so why not lean into that a little bit?
